Imagine a tree deep in the forest, its bark weathered and scarred by time. One day, a small cluster of fungi begins to grow on its trunk, delicate yet persistent. At first, these fungi seem like an intrusion, an unfamiliar presence on the old tree. But, as they take root, they begin a subtle transformation, breaking down what is no longer needed and recycling it into nourishment.

Much like the tree fungi, when you embark on something new, it can feel strange, even unsettling, as the familiar gives way to the unknown. Yet, just as the fungi play a vital role in renewing the tree, these new beginnings hold the potential to bring fresh energy and growth into your life. Trust in the magic of these beginnings, for they are nature’s way of creating something vibrant and strong from what once was. The process may be slow and invisible at first, but soon, like the tree nourished by its fungi, you will find yourself thriving in ways you never imagined.

Imagine my terrarium as a miniature world, perfectly enclosed and self-sustaining. Within this glass container, every element has its role—plants, soil, rocks, and moisture all work together in harmony. When something isn’t thriving, you don’t need to dismantle the entire system; instead, you make small adjustments. Perhaps the plants need a little more light, or the soil needs to be slightly more damp. By making these targeted changes, the terrarium flourishes, just as in life, where small, focused actions can lead to significant improvements.

In a solution-focused approach, you don’t need to overhaul everything; sometimes, all it takes is a bit more “light” in one area or a touch more “nourishment” in another to bring the whole system into balance.

I know today is going to be a busy day, I am teaching all day but also have to organise a trip and order a whole load of copying, so how does a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist deal with a potentially overwhelming workload.

Well I practice what I preach and I try to maintain perspective by staying in my intellectual mind by doing several things;

🌟I try to be positive in my outlook for the day and look for things going right, not wrong
🌟I get on with things that will help me reach my goal and will help the day go smoothly
🌟I will take time to have a chat with my colleagues and friends
🌟I will think positive thoughts (booking my next holiday)
Now things won’t be perfect and I’m sure I will be tempted to dip into my primitive mind, but all of us do and it isn’t about life being without challenge but having the capacity to deal with the challenges as they arise.

Happy World Entrepreneur Day!
As a new entrepreneur myself, I have begun to understand the feelings of overwhelm, stress and anxiety that comes with setting up your own business. I sometimes go into my primitive mind which is full of anxiety and caution thinking “will this be successful - will clients want to come to me”. Luckily though I have developed the skills to pull me out of these negative thoughts and push my motivation forward.

Cortisol is one of the chemicals our bodies produce in response to being stressed or very busy. It is part of our Fight, Flight, Freeze response and is actually very important in dangerous situations, however, chronic stress and consistently high cortisol levels can lead to negative health effects, such as weakened immune function, weight gain, and increased risk of chronic diseases like hypertension and diabetes.
You can learn to manage stress, keep it out of your bucket and only produce cortisol when you actually need it. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help you do this.

I’m back in my other place of work, after the summer setting up my hypnotherapy practice. Still supporting young people but in a different way.
Helping people has been part of what I have always done and since finding Solution Focused Hypnotherapy I have discovered a better way to look at things - a more positive, forward thinking way. I try to instil this in the young people I work with every day but some young people still struggle.

Today has finally arrived, the first day back at school for our young people. Some of them will be experiencing transitions into bigger secondary schools, some will be looking ahead towards certificate exams, some may even be looking forward to spending time with their friends and larger social group. Many of these experiences may be tinged with anxiety and spotting these signs means that you can help your youngster at the earliest opportunity, so here is a brief guide to spotting the signs and I hope you find it helpful.

Did you know that your brain doesn’t know the difference between reality and imagination? When you have a thought, any thought, a connection is made between two nerve cells. If you have the same thought another connection is made building up this connection and making it stronger every time. If these thoughts are negatively predicting the future, this is the memory that you will always refer back to, not the times when things have gone right. Therefore by actively thinking about things go well, you can physically change the structure of your brain, enabling you to be more confident with positive outcomes in life.

During every hypnotherapy session I talk about a “stress bucket”. So what is this? The “stress bucket” is a metaphor used to describe how stress accumulates in our minds. Imagine you have an invisible bucket inside you, and every time you experience stress or negative thoughts—whether from work, relationships, or daily pressures—some of that stress drips into the bucket. Over time, if not managed, the bucket fills up, leading to feelings of overwhelm, anxiety, or even physical symptoms like headaches or fatigue.

When the stress bucket is full, even small challenges can feel insurmountable. The mind has little capacity to process new information or deal with new problems effectively because it’s already overloaded. This can lead to a vicious cycle where stress perpetuates more stress, making it harder to see solutions or maintain a balanced perspective.

I help clients to learn to regularly empty their stress buckets, they increase their capacity to handle new stressors. When the bucket is not constantly full, there’s more room to deal with unexpected problems without becoming overwhelmed. The combination of stress relief through hypnosis and a focus on solutions allows clients to develop a more resilient mindset. They become better equipped to manage stress, see problems as manageable, and approach life’s challenges with a clearer, more focused mind.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy helps clients manage and reduce their stress by “emptying” their stress buckets, leading to improved mental clarity, greater emotional resilience, and a stronger capacity to handle new challenges as they arise.

It is so much easier to think of the negative “what ifs” rather than the positive ones. When we negatively predict the future we find ourselves in the part of the brain where anger, anxiety and depression live. Our negative thoughts fill up our stress bucket and leave us with less capacity to deal with situations in life that otherwise we would be able to cope with.

A bit of a girly day with my daughter getting our nails done and then some shopping but also a great example of some positive interaction.
When we interact with others we are rewarded with a flow of positive chemicals in our brains that makes us feel happy.
These interactions don’t need to be a day spent with someone we love but might just be smiling at someone, complementing someone or doing something kind.
When we feel down or low we tend to steer away from these interactions and therefore there are less feel good chemicals which then makes us feel worse.
So if you do one small thing today make it a positive interaction and you will feel the benefit.

Today is International Self Care Day. So today it is OK to prioritise yourself, enjoy some downtime, meet up with friends and think about all the lovely things you can do that will help you destress and enjoy life.

When we smile we activate chemical responses in our brains that reduce stress and make us feel altogether brighter and happier, even if we force ourselves to smile. This is great, but even better, when we smile at someone else, we activate nerves in their brains called mirror neurons that makes them want to smile and they will feel the benefits of smiling too. We all have the power within us to make other people feel good and this positive interaction will also reward us with a flow of feel good chemicals.
