Daisy Roots

Daisy Roots grows healthy, happy, hardy herbaceous perennials and grasses at our Hertford based nurs

At Daisy Roots we specialise in growing choice & unusual hardy perennial plants. Our plant list gets larger every year but only ever includes good, garden worthy plants that we would give space to in our own garden. Indeed, the nursery is surrounded by deep borders where you can see many of the plants we sell thriving and showing just how good they could look in your garden.

As we head into late summer, colours seem to intensify, preparing for the grand finale; Echinacea, Helenium, Verbena and Panicum.

Several Jersey Tiger moths around on the nursery this week. Feasting here on both Succusella Frosted Pearl and Eupatorium Baby Joe.

Now we are having a dry spell of weather, numbers of butterflies and bees are beginning to improve; there were nine Comma butterflies on the Scabious Kudos Blur yesterday but my phone was at the other end of the nursery!

This week at Daisy Roots, we are going for Gold!

August is the season for Helianthus, Rudbeckia, Bidens, and all things yellow. Add some sunshine to your borders using the following;
1. Rudbeckia fulgida Goldsturm
2. Helianthus Anne
3. Crocosmia George Davidson
4. Bidens Hannays Lemon Drop
5. Rudbeckia Loofahsa Wheaten Gold
6. Helianthus Flying Saucer
7. Rudbeckia Herbs tonne
8. Bidens already
9. Rudbeckia Henry Eliers

Not to everyone's taste, granted, but I really like the contrasting red outer and golden yellow inner on this relatively recent cultivar

Crocosmia Harlequin is half as tall again as it6ever been before and is covered in flower this year after all the rain.
I think Crocosmia enjoy a lot more moisture than we credit them for, even though they hail from South Africa

Monarda punctata, the Spotted Bee Balm hails from the eastern states of Canada, the USA and northern Mexico.

It copes with dryish conditions better than most of its relatives, but pollinators flock to it just as readily. Grow in sun on well drained soil.

Heliopsis Burning Hearts (foreground) and Helianthus Miss Mellish making a nice combo on the nursery sales beds today.

I love the contrast of the burnt orange flowers with the purple foliage of the Heliopsis and the unusual two-tiered arrangement of the petals on the Helianthus.

Agastache Blue Boa looking lovely in the sunshine today. This aromatic beauty should carry on flowering into early autumn and is always buzzing with bees and the occasional butterfly, too!
Grow in sun on well drained soil 🐝🐝🐝

Another day, another foxglove; may I introduce Digitalis ambigua (formerly grandiflora).

Native to southern Europe and Asia, this perennial beauty will enjoy life in sun or dapple shade on well drained soil. Meanwhile, the local bumblebees will feast!
