Energy Saving Tips No. 9 – Water-saving shower heads

• Choosing a water-saving shower head will reduce your water consumption and you'll save energy too.
• Using less water means less energy is required to heat the water, so the benefits are twofold.
• 175 minutes of showering uses just 262 gallons of water. Which means you save about 60 percent every month.

Energy Saving Tips No. 8 – Keep Fridges & Frezers energy efficient

• Keep an eye on the actual temperature inside your refrigerator keep it between 2.2 degrees and 3.3 degrees centigrade
• Choose or upgrade to an energy-efficient model.
• Give your fridge a cool place and some room to breathe. The position of your fridge can have an impact on how hard it has to work.
• Keep the door closed to keep it cool.
• Keep your fridge organised. Less time spent looking for food in the fridge means keeping the door open for a shorter time and food will last longer.
• Keep your fridge full. A fuller fridge has less air to keep cool, so doesn’t have to work quite as hard as a sparsely populated appliance.
• Store Food Properly. Use refrigerator-safe containers to store all food. Glass containers are better than plastic ones because glass absorbs and retains cold better. Moisture inside your fridge will make it harder to stabilize the internal temperature. Cover foods and liquids to avoid over-working the compressor.
• Don't put hot food in your refrigerator as the appliance has to work hard to bring that temperature back down again.
• Keep an eye on door seals – broken seals allows warm air into the fridge
• Keep the coils clean – unplug and vacuum and brush the coils at the back of your refrigerator
• Use power saving settings, If there’s not very much in your fridge to keep cool will reduce energy consumption

Energy Saving Tips No. 7 – Don’t heat rooms you’re not using

Another common myth. Don't pay for heat that you're not using! If you are out during the day (or tucked up in bed at night), you don't need the heating on. Even if you turn your thermostat down a bit, your boiler will keep firing up and using energy (and cost you money) at times when you won't feel the benefit.

Myth. If you come home to a cold house, it’s tempting to whack the thermostat up in the hope that this will make the place warm up faster. Sadly it wont; your boiler works at the same constant speed regardless of whether you set your thermostat to 20C or 30C. In fact, you’re likely to find that later in the evening you’ll be sweltering – and wasting a lot of money – as your boiler doesn't stop when the room is comfortable.

Set the thermostat to a sensible room temperature, between 18-21C, and then leave it alone.

Energy Saving Tips No. 6 – Try not to use your tumble dryer

A tumble dryer is on of the top five energy consuming home appliances accounting for 14% of a typical energy bill.
• If you can dry clothes outside
• If you have no outside space look at heated clothes airers. They’re also better for the environment, and arguably less expensive to run: around 15p per hour, as opposed to around £2.80 per load in a tumble dryer based on current electricity prices (Oct 2022)
• Dehumidifiers are cheaper but they take much longer to dry clothes so it may not save on energy in the long run
• Don’t dry clothes on a radiator as you block heating the room and it costs you more money and energy as your heating system has to work harder. It also makes your room full of more moisture which can lead to mold

Energy Saving Tips No. 5 – Keep the lid on pans when cooking
Putting a lid on a pan saves precious energy from being wasted!
• It is better to boil water in your kettle first and then put it in the pan.
• Only use as much water as you need – boiling extra takes more time and energy
• The heat which arises from heating the contents in the pan is trapped, when the pan is covered with a lid. This trapped heat in turn helps the contents cook/boil faster, hence reducing the amount of energy that would have been required if there was no lid!

Find out more about this weekends climate conference on the UN Climate Change website...https://unfccc.int/

At the Paris COP21 conference international leaders agreed on the need to step up action on climate change. As we approach COP27 this weekend how much has changed?
National governments have been struggling with competing demands and it's probably fair to say that progress in the UK has been slower than needed. We can all do our part though, whether demanding change through local representatives, making changes to our own lifestyles, or working with local organisations to deliver action on a local level to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. If you want to make a difference let us know how we can help you. Contact Holme Valley Climate Action Partnership at [email protected]. We can help source funds for projects, share advice and information, and help connect people to work together for local change.

Energy Saving Tips No. 4 – Don’t overfill the kettle

Do not fill your kettle too full. Many people don’t realise how much electricity kettles use and how much is wasted.
• If you only want 2 cups of tea don’t boil enough water for 4 or more!
• Models and brands of kettle are all made differently and therefore have different rates of energy consumption.
• While gas is definitely cheaper per kWh, electric appliances can work faster, reducing the amount of time you're using energy.

Energy Saving Tips No. 3 – Reduce water usage in the bathroom

The less water you use, the less energy you need to heat the hot water, and the lower your energy bills will be.
• Take short showers instead of baths to save both water and energy. A five minute shower can use about a third of the water of a bath.
• If having a bath make it a shallow one.
• Where you're able to try and use cold water rather than hot. No need to have a freezing cold shower but you could rinse your toothbrush and hands in cold water.
• While brushing your teeth – don't leave the tap on. This can waste up to 8,000 litres of water a year.
Make sure everyone in your house understands why you want to save energy and how they can help.

Energy Saving Tips No. 2 - Washing Machines and Tumble Dryers

• Always try to fully load appliances like washing machines and tumble dryers or use half load settings where available.

• Can you wash at a reduced temperature in some cases – e.g. 30C?

• Is it possible to dry clothes outside rather than using a tumble dryer or use a low cost electric heated airer?

Energy Savings Tips – No. 1 The Thermostat

Thermostat controls on the heater is a quick and easy way to reduce your energy costs and lower your carbon emissions

• Reducing the temperature setting is one of the quickest and easiest ways to reduce energy costs. Many people find that settings of around 19C (or even less) quite comfortable once draughts are minimised and insulation is improved.

• If the heating system does not already have one, consider installing an intelligent heating controller. These can provide more accurate and consistent control of the heating system. These will cost £100 - £200 but again you see a relatively quick payback as your fuel bills reduce.

• Consider thermostatic radiator valves to ensure that each room is correctly heated and some spaces are not being ‘over-heated’.

Say hello to the Climate Emergency Action Plan Group

Holme Valley Parish Council has pledged to make the Valley carbon Neutral by 2030. It's a tall target but we plan to help individuals to see how they can make a difference to the future of their local community by the way they live their lives. This page is dedicated to keeping people of the Holme Valley informed and educated as to what they can do to change attitudes and lifestyles that help towards saving the planet and hopefully also helping to reduce spending in certain areas.

How did this declaration happen? After declaring a Climate Emergency on 25th March 2019 and agreeing to publish an action plan in six months, Holme Valley Parish Council established a Climate Emergency Action Plan Working Group tasked with producing a draft action plan for the Council. This action plan was approved by the Council in October 2019. The Council then authorised the creation of a new Standing Committee, - the Climate Emergency Committee, - to oversee the development and practical implementation of the Holme Valley Climate Emergency Action Plan.

Holme Valley Parish Council has now published its Climate Emergency Action Plan. The Action Plan lays out its goals with regard to managing the Climate Emergency and encourages local people to get involved in any small way they can to start to make a difference.

You will be able to find booklets of the Plan throughout the Holme Valley, where COVID safe, including:
