I need to correct something said in the message. The Ark of the Covenant was only behind the Holy of Holies in the portable Tabernacle and Solomon's Temple. The Ark of the Covenant was removed from the Temple during the Babylonian ransack in 586BC. In Zerubbabel's and Herod's Temple it is believed there was only a stone table behind the curtain. The blood of the sacrifices were sprinkled on this - where the mercy seat would have been. The most important element is that it was still believed that God dwelled behind the curtain in the Holy of Holies, and that He could only be approached by the High Priest.
