Archive: Elektra House - A beautiful project by the talented David Adjaye.

Conceived as a large light box allowing natural light to flood into the house, this element serves in place of traditional windows to mitigate loss of privacy of both the inhabitants and neighbouring residents on this sensitive site located in London.

The home replaced a small workshop on the site, the use of large glass panels helps cleverly mask the additional mass required to create this family home.

This project showcases a large gable structure which plays homage to a traditional agricultural shed.

The building is closed to the street with partially screened windows with the rear elevation accommodating large glazed openings taking advantage of the views overlooking the river and landscape.

“God is in the details.” - Mies van der Rohe

Following to our visit to the show last week, it reinforces the design synergies between different finishes and the role of glass within the technical detailing and beauty of buildings.

‘ redesign for the Victoria & Albert's main entrance playfully reworks the entrance lobby, information desk and WCs, using materials such as glass-tubes and terrazzo made from crushed waste jasperware, which reference the museum's collections.

The new entrance lobby in the Grade I-listed Aston Webb-designed building is formed of three bands of progressively slimmer glass tubes: 120mm diameter on the lower level, 60mm on the mid-level and 30mm on the upper level.

The passage of light through the glass is designed to produce optical distortions that accentuate the movement of people through the entrance. The tubes also help capture and project daylight, with the whole structure helping to bring illumination into the interior.’ - Architects Journal

Dark Matter is a building designed by showcasing the impact of a modern casement window and concealed pivot door within a beautifully detailed elevation.

Hidden within a garden on a suburban plot of the market town of Tring, the studio was made possible by readapting the ruins of a former garage, into a 40m2 studio.
