Six decades of the Saab 96 in rallying! 🫶🏻

We can’t see 2023 out without acknowledging the incredible Monte Carlo Rally victory for the Saab 96 Sport in 1963, can we?

It’s 60 years since Erik Carlsson and Gunnar Palm beat Pauli Toivonen and Järvi Anssi in the Citroën DS by just 22 seconds, repeating his Swedish success on the famous rally in ‘62.

Rauno Aaltonen and Tony Ambrose would bring their Mini home in 3rd, an ominous sign of things to come as the Minis began their dominant run.

Carlsson and the Saab were not quite done and dusted, however - the pairing would go on to achieve 3rd place in ‘64, with Erik’s wife Pat Moss-Carlsson repeating the feat and upholding family honours on the Monte Carlo podium with Ursula Wirth the year after.

Thankfully, we don’t need to look back wistfully to the 1960s for our Saab fix - Colin Hope and Billy Dalgleish took their 96 V4 to 71st overall, 3rd in class on this year’s RAC Rally.

What a car. What a legacy. What a sport. ❤️

Well early bath today the V4 bottom end decided it has had enough of reving to 7k @ the end of Stage 3 . But Steve happy with the handling & gear ratios in New V4 Rally car which had been stood for the last 15 years. And we had the cylinder heads off to do some valve work & done lots more work on the V4 to bring it up to today's Rallying standards . Big Thank you to Adam Charlesworth & Jonathan Taylorsmith for getting it this far , things will get better & better with this V4 after engine rebuild.☢️🤓👍

Well that's another away to body shop for a full paint job after lost of quality welding work by Jonathan Taylorsmith NOS inner wings & rear panel & boot floor & both sills ext & lots more . Looking forward to getting her back to put back together ☢️🤓👍

Another Classic 900 LPT will live again on way back from been painted after we had done all the welding work . And full engine rebuild & powder coated suspension & brake upgrade & lots of other parts ext , will put more photos on as she goes back together.☢️🤓👍

Well what a weekend. Started off very well until 2nd Stage on the Malton Stages Rally with Steve Higgins & Corey Powell-Jones and a lot of other rally crews. 🥲☢️🤓👍

Malton Forest Rally 2022 (CRASHES!!!)

Very well done Colin Hope & Nick Patrick on finishing 3rd in Class & 30th Over hall on Trackrod Historic Rally today after not doing any Rallying since last years Rodger Albert Clark Rally last November & having a big crash . We had a few problems today with gearbox bearing noise & starter motor playing up but he got to the finish in his trusty V4 ☢️🤓👍

A Good week with 2X Red 99 Turbos in Workshop this week one for a set off New springs we do to Original spec & the other which is an on going restoration for engine rebuild & Re-Con Turbo & waste gate which we do the New Diaphragm for & full gasket kit to fit them ☢️🤓👍

Very well done Steve Oade & Joe Oade on Malton Rally 1st time out in the woods in the 96 V4 & 1st H1 .☢️🤓👍

MALTON RALLY 7Th November & RAC RALLY 25th -29th

The MALBRAD TEAM Will be out serving for Colin Hope in a SAAB 96 V4 & Steve Higgins in a SAAB 2Stroke on both events . Additionally, Steve Oad will be doing the MALTON Rally in Ex Steve Higgins Orville green SAAB 96 V4 . Hope to see lots of people there cheering them along .It has been 2 years since our last Rally . Well another Classic 900 Lpt is starting to look a lot better now after hours & hours of Work from Jonathan Taylorsmith well at least the front end . Rear welding still to sort ☢️😎👍

The Malbrad Team who include, Jonathan Taylorsmith and Adam Charleworth will be servicing for some of the Crews during the Rodger Albert Clarke Rally. Other service members TBA .The Drivers competing are Colin Hope Saab 96 V4 , Jim Valentine Saab 99 , Steve Higgins Saab 2Stroke , Nick Pinkett Saab 2Stroke , Gavin Chisham Saab 99 , Magic McCombie Saab 900.Looking forward to seeing friends and customers providing this is Covid-19 compliant allowing spectators. Below are the plans outlined by the Rally Manager Colin Heppenstall.

The Rally has definitely been confirmed for 2021 from the 25-29 November ! This will be welcome news for all Rally enthusiasts without question after a difficult year in 2020 where many events were cancelled or simply couldn’t run because of Covid-19.

The first three days of Rallying will take place in Kielder and the Scottish Borders. The rally will finish the third leg in Carlisle on Saturday evening.

After three days in the north of England and southern Scotland the ambitious five day rally will move to Wales where the Rally will start at mid-day on Sunday and Monday 28-29 November. Crews will then head then head to Welshpool where the Rally will restart at mid day on Sunday. The outline route for Wales has been organised to help intended competitors plan logistics and accommodation. Some of the best known Welsh forests special stages will play a key role in Wales leg of 70 Stages . Service will take place in Dolgellau and the last leg will end in Machynlleth on Sunday evening.

The final day of the Rally will restart from Epynt ranges on Monday morning . There will be a further 60 stage miles before the finish on Monday afternoon.

Exact details of the special stages to be used will be confirmed shortly but what is certain is that the 2021 Welsh leg will be the biggest so far for this incredible event. Up to 40% of the total competitive route will be run in Wales and the event will use special stages never used before in the previous 13 editions of the Rodger Albert Clarke Rally.

Rally Manager Colin Heppenstall felt that it was important to get this information out as early as possible. “We have had many enquiries from prospective competitors who are keen to book accommodation in good time . We hope that this information will allow them to continue there planning..........This will help spread out the demand for accommodation in an area with few major Hotels .”

Mr Heppenstall anticipates opening entries for the event at the end of April. Judging by the level of competitor interest so far , there is going to be a high demand for places on what will be the Longest and the Toughest special stage Rally in the UK 🇬🇧 for two decades.
