AT THIS TIME OF YEAR exposure to windy conditions and hot air can cause tears to evaporate leaving your eyes dry and gritty and while some people suffer from eyes becoming drier in winter, a lot of people can also suffer from their eyes producing more tears due to the cold air and wind.
You can protect your eyes by wearing glasses to prevent wind from blowing into your eyes, which should significantly reduce watery eyes. There is a possibility that watery eyes can be a symptom of an infection or a blocked tear duct, so if you have a persistent problem with watery eyes it is a good idea to get your eyes checked at your local opticians...

A guide to Road Safety for Older Drivers

An ageing population and many people are continuing to drive their car in later years, for work, family, community commitments and convenience.
According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM Roadsmart) there are now over 1.65 million people who hold full driving licences over the age of 80 in the UK. In addition, the number of motorists over the age of 70 is likely to double over the next 20 years.

Changes in your eyesight can slower reaction times, and medications can affect driving. As a result you may find you start to avoid driving at night, use the car less, drive shorter distances along quieter routes and generally avoid motorway driving where possible.

It is VERY important to make sure that whenever you get into your car you are still able to drive safely. Regular eye examinations are one way to keep everyone safe on the roads. You do not have to wait until you are due for your next eye examination if you notice changes in your vision.

Read on for more useful information on driving safe -

Top tips - There are things you can do to keep driving safely for as long as you can...

1. Get regular eye examinations - changes can be gradual and may go unnoticed. If you do notice any changes at all to your vision, get in touch with your Optician straight away.
Depending on the time of day, the sun might be blinding. Eye diseases, such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration, as well as some medicines, can also cause vision problems. Your Optician will not only ensure you have the right glasses or contacts for driving, but will also flag up any common age-related conditions.

2. Wear your hearing aids (if you normally use them) - Any kind of sensory loss can lead to feeling confused and disconnected from your surroundings. It can be helpful too for hearing oncoming sirens and horns. Also, it is helpful to notice any differences in your engine sounds. Often a strange noise will be the first sign of any problems arising.

3. Prepare for night driving - Driving at night can be hazardous and the first rule is to wear an up-to-date pair of distance glasses or contact lenses that have been recommended to you by your Optician. Avoid wearing tinted lenses at night, such as red or amber, as they can filter out traffic lights, brake lights and indicators of cars in front.

4. Make sure your headlights, brake lights and indicators are all working - Don't forget to keep all lights clean and make sure your windscreen is clean and clear, inside and out.

This Bonfire Night...

Be aware of the Firework Code!

Not only are fireworks themselves a potential danger to eyes, it’s thought that 10% of firework related injuries are caused by sparklers.

The College of Optometrists advises:

Don’t give sparklers to children under the age of five
Keep your arm extended when waving a sparkler
Never bring the sparkler close to your face.
Ensure each child has plenty of space around them.
Don’t let children run whilst holding a sparkler.
Never leave children alone with sparklers.
Have a bucket of water nearby so they may be disposed of safely.

If anyone in your party does suffer a firework eye injury...

Quick action can minimise long-term damage.
Do not rub or rinse the injured eye, or apply any ointments to the eye area.
Seek medical attention IMMEDIATELY!

Are you experiencing difficulties in seeing things clearly?

At this time of year our vision (especially when driving) can be compromised by the daylight changes after the clocks go back.

Blurred vision could however be a different complaint, but what do we mean by 'Blurry Vision' ?
This refers to a lack of sharpness of vision resulting in the inability to see fine details. It may be as a result from abnormalities such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, presbyopia, or astigmatism, which can be improved with corrective lenses.

If you notice any unusual or sudden changes in your vision however, this could be a sign that you should see your Optician as soon as possible!

Are Halloween Coloured Contact Lenses safe?

Wearing fun coloured contact lenses without a prescription may seem harmless, but beware... costume contacts can at best, cause nasty irritation to your eyes and at worst, cause serious if not permanent damage.

Any type of contact lenses no matter where they are from, must be properly fitted by an Eyecare Professional (i.e. your Optician) to avoid serious problems with your eyes.

As Summer ends and Autumn arrives our eyes are exposed to different environments and sun height.

Once the weather gets colder, we automatically want to turn on the heating in our homes. Central heating, blow heaters, electric heaters etc. anything to keep us warm can cause havoc to the eyes.
To help avoid eye problems, consciously blinking more regularly is recommended. Drinking plenty of fluids and using protective eye drops will help to keep your eyes moisturised to combat allergies and dry eyes.

The Autumn sun and its position is lower in the sky and the amount of UV radiation your eyes are exposed to can dramatically be increased. Wearing a good quality pair of sun spectacles will help protect your eyes from the UVA & UVB rays and glare...

During the summer months most people focus on enjoying the warmer weather, planning their summer holiday and other fun events, not the eye problems they may encounter during the season.

Here are 5 common eye issues that can occur during the summer season...

DRY EYES
During the summer higher temperatures, fans, and air conditioning can all increase the occurrence of dry eyes. A lack of humidity can also be a compounding factor increasing your chances of experiencing dry eyes.
In most cases a 'dry eye' condition is noticeably uncomfortable. You may experience a gritty or stinging sensation as well as redness, sensitivity to light, eye watering and more.
If you’re experiencing these symptoms seek out advice, make an effort to stay hydrated and consider using lubricating drops. Drinking more water can make a difference, while the drops provide quick relief.

TIRED EYES
If your summer is especially busy you may experience more eye tiredness than usual. For many people, enjoying the season can mean missing out on critical sleep... something that can leave your eyes irritated and fatigued.
For tired eyes your best bet is to give your eyes a break by getting enough sleep. Also, if you're a contact lens wearer try wearing glasses for a while to give your eyes a break. Take 10mins to give yourself a hot or cold eye compress. Rest your eyes from using digital devices. Try some quality eye drops (ask for adivce).

ALLERGIES
While many people assume that eye allergies are only a major issue in the spring, they are still prevalent in the summer. Exposure to allergens from pollen, seeds and flowers prompts the release of histamine which can lead to a cascade of allergic symptoms.
Eye allergies can be incredibly uncomfortable. Some symptoms may include itching, burning, swelling and dryness. If you have eye allergies try to reduce your exposure. Wear sunglasses, wash your face as soon as you come indoors and even change clothing.
If you are suffering with these symptoms do ask for advice.

INFECTION
Eye infections can happen at any time of the year.
You may participate in activities that can increase your risk, such as swimming in a public pool or a nearby river or lake that may host to a range of bacteria.
To reduce your odds of contracting an infection, wear goggles while swimming. Additionally, rinse off after swimming ensuring contaminants do not remain on your skin. Sharing facecloths and towels is also not recommended. Eye infections tend to be highly contagious.

SUN DAMAGE
When people think of sun damage they usually think of sunburn. However, believe it or not harmful UV rays can lead to corneal burns. This is a condition with symptoms like blurry vision, dryness, and a gritty feeling in the eye. The easiest way to protect yourself (adults and children) against corneal burns, is to wear quality sunglasses. Make sure to pick a pair that offers full-spectrum UV protection. Call in to see our range of sunspecs, that can also be tailored to your prescriptive needs...

HAPPY 4th JULY 😎

27/06/2023

Wanting to cool off and have a refreshing swim. However, if you are a contact lens wearer you could be putting your eye health at risk when swimming.

While soft contact lenses are more likely to remain on your eyes when in the water than hard contacts, they are made of a porous material that can absorb bacteria and chemicals which might be in the water increasing eye irritation and infection. Additionally, fresh water swimming can cause soft lenses to tighten on the eye causing significant discomfort.

We advise that you don't take the risk... but still enjoy the water.
At HUNSTANTON EYECARE we can offer you the best in prescription swimming goggles. For more advice or information, call us on 01485 532326...
