As it's Women's History Month we're celebrating some of the women who shaped the Games industry. Who better to kick things off than Carol Shaw, one of the first female games programmers and designers and the first woman to get her name on a games box.
Starting at Atari she began writing games for the Atari 2600, her first games included 3D tic-tac-toe and Polo.
From there she moved on to Activision where she made her name. Here she created the game she is best known for, River Raid - a vertically scrolling shooter that won numerous awards and sold over a million cartridges. She retired in 1990 at the age of 35 and in 2017 she was awarded the Industry Icon Award at the Game Awards.

We wanted to help you to get to know us!! So, we asked the team some questions to get to know them better.
Today we have Henry Durrant one of our Senior Programmers.
Part 2/2
Who/What inspired you to pursue the career you have today?
I've always been fascinated in learning how things work, and I was always (and still am) interested in how the 3D graphics and video games I enjoy are made and how they work. I fell for the potential for creating pretty much anything and bringing it to life in Code and Art.
What words of wisdom would you give to someone trying to get into the industry?
It's a team effort so someone that works well with others and has a willingness to learn and adapt is just as important if not more important than raw qualifications. If you can reasonably do the job and are good to work with, that trumps being a difficult, antisocial genius.
What do you do in your spare time (Hobbies, Sports, etc..)
Woodworking, hobby electronics, nature walks, art & life drawing, just getting into 3D Printing and CAD.
Do you have a pet? Whatâs he/she like?
I have a cat, Archie. He's a sweet cat and his favourite toy is chasing red string.
If life were a video game, what two cheat codes would you want?
Undo. Set Weather / Time of Day.

I have a decent internet connection, so itâs been fairly easy. With text and video chat itâs not felt isolated at all and having my high-spec work PC at home has helped productivity. Getting my commute time back has been nice and I'm enjoying cooking at lunchtimes.

End of week question, anyone?
What programming languages do I need to know for game design?
I don't think it is strictly a necessity - though being able to think logically and clearly articulate your ideas is Essential IMO.
I would expect a designer to have some experience in UE4 / Blueprints or Unity these days.
Some designers I have worked with have been proficient in Lua, python and javascript - which are popular in some engines.
We wanted to help you to get to know us!! So, we asked the team some questions to get to know them better.

Interesting question here.
Why is C++ the more preferred language for game development?
The programmer still maintains a lot of control over what is happening at the assembler level, cp with other languages.
Efficiency, support, flexibility, familiarity ( lots of resource to draw on ).
C++ allows you to be object oriented, but still allows you to get "close - to - the - metal " when needed.
The generated code can be made sense of when looking at the assembler ( templates and complex operators aside ) simple looking code generally equates to simple / efficient asm code ( data access patterns aside ).
It is usually the only choice for developing on consoles if you want 1st party support.

Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order, Burnout Paradise: Remastered for Switch and .... shhh
What words of wisdom would you give to someone trying to get into the industry?
Stand out! There is a lot of competition and we get a lot of CV's, the best thing to do is to make it pop - As games get more technically awesome and consoles become more powerful there is so much more that can be done and everyone is aiming to make that next BIG game but to do that you need great people - Work on your own mini projects, keep up to date with current tech, experiment with new ways of doing things and come up with ideas that you think would make a game amazing.
What do you do in your spare time (Hobbies, Sports, etc..)
I like to work on projects for Nequinox in my spare time as I want to see the company grow and succeed other than that I just play games and try to master cooking food I enjoy.
Do you have a pet? Whatâs he/she like?
I have a Hamster and she is really tame and actually responds to her name!
If life were a video game, what two cheat codes would you want?
Spawn and Teleport

How has working for Nequinox Studios been?
I think since starting in the garage in 2018 and now being a growing studio with an office and teams, I have worked on cool things and got the opportunity to work with some amazing people, I'm really enjoying it and look forward to the future of Nequinox!
What has working from home been like?
I haven't found it too bad however I do miss the office environment and the creative ideas being thrown around casually instead of being an appointment by video call, I sense that others do too and I hope in time we can safely make a return.
Who/What inspired you to pursue the career you have today?
I think it was probably my Dad, he has worked in the games industry since I was born and although making games is hard work and its not for everyone - the sense of achievement that he always expressed when finishing a game - seeing it appear in stores; and the hours of fun people (including myself) would get from what he helped create made me want to join in on this challenge and make some amazing game experiences that everyone can enjoy.
We're still working from home here at . We have an interesting setup from one of our Senior Programmers Tom.

Its Friday, end of the week, what's everyone's weekend plans? We've got another question to answer to finish off the week
When coming up with a new game idea, is it a certain team that comes up with an idea or can it be a company wide idea where people share their thoughts and opinions?
Both for sure. The trick with ideas is to make them real. Write it down, draw it, record it, make it out of Play Doh and lollipop sticks if it explains the idea. Do whatever it takes to make something that someone else could look at and understand.
That doesnât necessarily mean make the perfect version either. No one ever came up with the perfect idea, and it just happened⌠ever⌠ever⌠ever!!!
My advice is to be prolific. Generate ideas, random ones, thematic ones, create derivatives of ideas, then destroy them and mix them all up like a David Bowie song - Whatever it takes to get people excited about it! Just like great artists, its important to realise when that idea has become something you can stop developing, and just realise. Great painters knew when to stop⌠great thinkers and ideators know how to do this too.
AND⌠a great game doesnât necessarily make a great product⌠consider the differences
We wanted to help you to get to know us!! So, we asked the team some questions to get to know them better.
First up we have one of our co-founders Stephen Robinson.
Part 2/2
What words of wisdom would you give to someone trying to get into the industry?
Don't wait for someone to tell you what to do, if you have ideas experiment, try out things - find what works, what is fun. Be driven, up to speed with new techniques and technology. Push the boundaries. Programmers - make sure you know the difference between a dot and cross product, where they are used in video games. Video games = Math!
What do you do in your spare time (Hobbies, Sports, etc..)
Almost (but never quite managing) to play guitar. New tech, video games, walking, cycling, swimming, Martial arts.
Do you have a pet? Whatâs he/she like?
Lilly - Dog - Labrador- absolutely crazy, but perfect for us.
If life were a video game, what two cheat codes would you want?
Recharge Energy, Rewind-> Retry
