🍹It's no coincidence that this group of pretty apartments have the name Bella Vista - the view from each one is breath-taking. Built in a peaceful location on a hillside, each rooftop forming the spacious balcony of the next, the apartments give guests a panoramic sweep which takes in the town of Sissi and the coastline. Located 45 kms from Heraklion, and just 300 metres from the lovely beach. Wander down to Sissi for a taste of vibrant nightlife, or there are a number of other towns and villages worth a visit including Stalis and Malia. The apartments are roomy, tastefully furnished and fully-equipped with large modern kitchen fittings and facilities. All are surrounded with beautiful gardens, a blaze of colour in summertime. A lovely big pool with plenty of sunbathing terrace around it takes centre stage, with the adjacent separate children's pool. With its situation in the middle of Crete, this is the perfect base for exploring the rest of the island and visiting the cultural attractions at Knossos, Festos and the ancient city of Gortyna, ancient capital of the Roman Empire. The lovely beach is just 300 metres away with its wonderful shallow sea and vast stretch of sand and there are a number of towns beyond the village of Sissi worth a visit: Stalis and Malia are nearby and Heraklion is only 45 kms away. All are easily reached by the bus which runs regularly from a stop close to the apartments. After a busy day out, enjoy a cocktail or two at the bar whilst watching the amazing sunset and recharging your batteries before wandering down to Sissi for a taste of the vibrant nightlife in the tavernas and bars around the bay. Please note: This accommodation is not suitable for guests with walking difficulties. The hotel is located on the outskirts of the resort (as it is a bit of a walk into the resort).

Brits will need €7 visa waiver to travel to EU next summer

EU officials have confirmed that Britons travelling to Europe next summer will need to apply for a visa waiver.

The visa waiver will cost €7 for people aged 18-70. There will be no charge for children and those over 70.

It will last for three years, or until the holder’s passport expires, whichever comes first.

Passengers will apply online or via a mobile app and most applications will be approved within minutes, say officials, although they have warned it might take up to 72 hours or even up to a month for more complex cases.

As part of the application process, ‘full disclosure’ is required regarding an applicant’s background, including travel history and any criminal record.

EU Home Affairs Minister Ylva Johansson said the visa waiver, officially called the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will follow the implementation of the automated EU Entry/Exit System (EES), which she has confirmed will launch on 10 November 2024 following years of delays.

She said introduction of the ETIAS will follow six months later, meaning it should be in place by mid-May 2025.

When the EES comes into force in the autumn, travellers with non-EU passports, including those travelling on British passports, will need to register their fingerprint and have their photo taken the first time they cross the border.

The new system is expected to lead to delays on arrival at EU airports and ports as it will take border guards up to two minutes longer to process each passenger.

Birmingham Airport to set up new pre-screening area to cut passenger queues

Birmingham Airport is planning to introduce a large pre-screening facility within days in a bid to help cut passenger queues.

Social media posts over the weekend and yesterday showed long queues of passengers outside the terminal, with people on Monday waiting in the rain. The airport said queues are being slowed down by passenger confusion over what they are and aren’t allowed to put in hand luggage.

CEO Nick Barton said he’s frustrated the airport’s next-generation security scanners, which were installed in time for 1 June as part of a £60 million investment, have not been able to be used to their full potential. He described the problem as ‘like having a sports car and having to use it in first gear’.

He told Travel Gossip: “We ordered an approved product which was installed in the airport in January, all ready for 1 June. We have met that deadline. In the run up to this we found that the machinery was not going to be allowed to be used to its full design capacity, around which we have based our schedule.

“We can’t use the machines other than the approval directed by the Government. Up until Friday we haven’t been able to talk about it because it’s a security issue. It’s a temporary issue. But until it is resolved we can’t use it at the capacity that it was meant, for reasons that are not in our control.

“This is the most complicated alteration to our airport ever taken. We can’t use it as it was designed to be used. Quite when it will be, we don’t know. We are hoping and praying it is soon. In the meantime we have to plan for it not being available.”

Passengers already go through pre-screening, but Birmingham Airport is planning to have a bigger area with up to 100 additional staff who will be brought in to check hand luggage and remove items that are not allowed.

Nick added: “I do apologise to any passenger that’s caught up in this. They are confused and I absolutely don’t blame them at all. What we can do is to help them to help us. Clearly it is totally confusing. Yesterday over half a ton of liquids out of cabin bags was not going to make it.

“We are aiming to launch a much bigger facility before security to help them get to compliance so that they can flow through security. We’re employing an awful lot of external contractors. We already had 25 extra people whose sole objective is to help passengers.”

He said the new facility will be set up ‘at the weekend or just beyond – subject to the logistics of the situation’ and he promised to ‘focus everything on this compliance team’.

He added holidaymakers are arriving at the airport up to nine hours before the flight, which ‘does not help anybody’ and he told passengers to check with their airline about arrival times and follow the airport’s advice that no liquids, pastes or gels over 100ml are allowed through security. These items should stay in hand luggage during the security search.

The old scanners are still in place, but Nick said: “We just can’t go back to the old system. We’ve got 300 staff who are trained on the new system. We can’t have them moving between the two. They are so complex. We can’t have the risk of having two systems in place.”

He added: “Our security staff want to look after our customers. I feel so bad for them. They are just feeling so upset that this is not working.”

Air India to add fifth route from Gatwick

Air India will start non-stop services between Bengaluru and London Gatwick this summer.

The service will start on 18 August 2024, making Bengaluru the fifth Indian city to be connected to the Gatwick.

Flights will operate five times a week, on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, featuring 18 flat beds in Business class and 238 spacious seats in Economy.

Air India CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson said: “This new route caters to the growing demand for travel between these two important business and leisure destinations, and strengthens our commitment to expanding our global network.”

Air India currently connects four other Indian cities to Gatwick: Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Goa, and Kochi.

Heathrow has urged passengers to use self-service e-gates this weekend due to a Border Force strike at the end of the English half-term holidays.
The three-day walkout by more than 500 officers from today (Friday) follows action taken on April 29-May 2.
Further industrial action short of a strike by Border Force members of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) at the London hub is planned between June 4-25 that will include a work to rule and overtime ban.
