1. Take measurements before buying your Christmas tree:
Once you have chosen a location in your home, measure the height, width and depth of the space. Your tree should be at least half a foot shorter than the ceiling to allow clearance for the topper – no one likes a squashed star! Also, allow for space around the tree so that it is not pushed up against the walls or furniture.

2. Test if your real Christmas tree is fresh:
A fresh tree has a healthy, shiny appearance. The needles should be flexible and not fall easily. You can check this by dropping the tree lightly on its stump. Evergreens lose needles all year, but if it drops more than a few, it is not fresh.

3. Consider purchasing environmentally friendly Christmas trees:
More than 7 million Christmas trees become household waste each year. Many councils turn old Christmas trees into green waste, but the process still generates 160,000 tonnes of waste each year (Carbon Trust).

Therefore it’s encouraged that you rent a tree or buy a potted tree that can be used each year. You’ll be able to return the tree to the supplier after the season is over, reducing carbon emissions and providing a home for wildlife, for the rest of the year.
