How To Prepare A Floor For Engineered Flooring Installation

1. Get the Right Materials

The start of preparation begins before you’ve ordered your dream oak or dark engineered wood flooring. Measuring the square footage of the space you’re working in determines how many pieces of wood you’ll need, including extra for emergencies.

2. Remove and Clean the Existing Base

No matter the type of flooring, starting with a clean slate is the best way to begin. Remove previous floors to expose the subfloor that you’ll use as the foundation during installation.

3. Check the Floor Level

Certain foundations may not be evenly levelled, depending on your house’s age. Uneven bases for solid floorings like tile and engineered wood planks create various challenges and issues, from potential future damage to the new floor and loose pieces to unappealing placements.

4. Place Underlayment

Floor underlayment’s are one of the most important steps to prepping for new flooring. They provide a range of benefits, including protection to the underside of your planks, added insulation, sound dampening, and additional barriers to moisture from the ground below.

5. Acclimate the New Floor

Wood inevitably takes in the moisture of its environment, causing them to expand or retract. Since engineered wood features a stronger resistance to moisture, it undergoes very minimal changes and adjustments when reacting to the water particles in the air. Typically, engineered wood takes up to 48 hours to fully adapt to its new surroundings.

✅ Focus on design and quality: Consider the shape (patterned or straight), general color (keeping in mind natural variations), and texture.

✅ Choose versatile tones:Mid-tones, like raw wood colors and yellows, fit well with any design scheme. Dark or light floors can look stunning in the right setting.

✅ Patterned floors: Chevron or Herringbone patterns are more expensive to supply and fit, so only choose these if you’re committed to the design.

✅ Quality matters: The quality of oils and manufacturing greatly affects performance. High-quality wood floors can last a lifetime, while poor-quality ones may not hold up well.

✅ Hire professional fitters: Professional fitters install 60+ floors a year, compared to contractors who do only 3 or 4. They can provide valuable advice on floor quality.

✅ Avoid cheap wood floors: If you’re on a budget, consider high-quality matte laminates. They may not have the depth of color or texture of natural wood, but they’ll last for decades and look good.

Why choose a Herringbone floor? Why invest in a professional fitter? Why do oils matter? Many of us are familiar with the "power of Why," and Instagram excels at leveraging it.

However, where Instagram falls short is in explaining "How," which is equally crucial for flooring.

We glue our Herringbone floors to either a ply base or a quick-drying leveling compound.

The subfloor is crucial. Most houses in Hackney require a combination of ply and leveling compound over the floorboards. Occasionally, leveling isn't needed, but this is rare.

As this is a glue-down floor, ensure you check moisture levels with a professional moisture reader before fitting, especially with concrete screed.
