Ullapool (Scottish Gaelic: Ulapul) is a village of around 1,500 inhabitants in Ross and Cromarty, Scottish Highlands, located around 45 miles (72 km) north-west of Inverness.

Despite its small size it is the largest settlement for many miles around, and an important port and tourist destination. The town lies on Loch Broom, on the A835 road from Inverness. The Ullapool River flows through the village.

Ullapool was founded in 1788 as a herring port by the British Fisheries Society. It was designed by Thomas Telford. Before then the town was only an insignificant hamlet of just over 20 households, although a large fort called Dun Canna lies just north of the village.
A walk into the bay where it is rewards you with a fort system that has been dated as over 2,500 years old and on a low tide a Viking fish trap is still evident in the bay below, an addition that was built in the 8th Century.

The Norse influence is still evident in many place names around the area. Ullapool itself is said to be derived from the norse 'Ulla-Bolstadr' meaning 'Ulla's steading'.

"We had a wonderful holiday with Highland Coastal Campers. We are not natural campers, so we appreciated Tracy’s advice and tips a lot. Tracy was extremely helpful and answered all our questions. We couldn’t have been happier. The van itself was really easy to drive and well equipped. I had heard about the narrow roads and was dreading navigating them. But my worries were unfounded, the vehicle was really easy to manoeuver.
Our boys (9 & 7) loved sleeping in the pop-up roof and we also had a very relaxing sleep – we particularly appreciated the heating, as the nights can get very cold.
The North Coast 500 is such a stunning route and the best bit about doing it in a camper van is parking right at the beach. We all loved it. Would Highly recommended that you get in touch with " 😃🚐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“We had an amazing time in the brand new campervan we hired from Highland Coastal Campers. The communication before the holiday began was excellent. We had so many questions as this was the first campervan holiday we had been been on. The YouTube videos were also extremely helpful.
The actual campervan was stunning, extremely well equipped and comfortable. Tracy had thought of everything.
The North Coast 500 route was spectacular. Every day the scenery got better and better. We managed to stay in some camping sites where we had electric hook up and wild camped on the other nights.
My only regret was that the holiday wasn’t long enough.
