Videos by John Fraser & Son in Inverness. Funeral Directors and Monumental Sculptors through four generations, spanning over 140 years.
This year marks the 140th anniversary of Vicki Fraser’s great grandfather founding our family firm, John Fraser & Son. This video doesn’t quite stretch back to 1884, but to 1933 – 90 years ago. It depicts Vicki’s grandfather, John Gordon Fraser, leading the funeral cortege of Simon Joseph Fraser, the 23rd Chief of Clan Fraser and 14th Lord Lovat, at St Mary’s Church at Eskadale, near Beauly.
We would love to be able to share more from the past 140 years as we mark our milestone, but we need your help. If you’ve any old photographs, paperwork or receipts that relate to our firm, please get in touch. We promise to take good care of anything you send us, and we’ll happily let you have it back. Thank you!

We are immensely proud of our smart silver fleet of hearses, cars, and limousines, and of the team that keep them looking so immaculate. Have you seen this short video taken at Culloden House Hotel? The fleet, and our team’s uniforms, are an external reflection of the care we always take behind the scenes when looking after your loved ones. Trust, respect, and dignity are at the heart of everything we do.
When it comes to the design, sculpting, and erection of a lasting memorial for yourself, or a loved one, we believe we have the greatest talent in the Highlands, in our memorial craftsman, Drew Wheeler. Drew, alongside Susan, from our memorials team, will work with you to design the perfect memorial to capture the personality and essence of your loved one. Check out the video to see how it all works, then make an appointment to discuss your needs. It doesn’t matter who conducted the funeral, or how long ago it was, we’re here to help.

Have you ever fancied reaching for the stars? We’ve teamed up with a company who can help your loved one to do exactly that after death, by incorporating a portion of their ashes into fireworks. Fireworks can be delivered for you to ignite during your own private farewell, or the firm can stage a full spectacular fireworks display to coincide with a special anniversary or memorial. Talk to us if you’d like to know more. This short video shows a recent fireworks display we organised. (Shared with the permission of the family)
Lord Lovat's Funeral
It’s fascinating to see how traditions change over time, and funerals are no different. We are delighted to have this archive silent film of Vicki’s grandfather leading the 1933 funeral of Simon John Fraser, 14th Lord Lovat, at St Mary’s Church, Eskadale near Struy. Lord Lovat had raised the Lovat Scouts, hence the diced bands on some of the soldiers’ Tam o’ Shanters, and was Major-General of the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders, seeing service in the Boer and First World Wars. We love seeing the horse-drawn gun-carriage and enclosed carriages from almost 90 years ago, but have you noticed anything missing?
