❓ Do you know the 4Ts of ? They are: Toilet (needing a wee more), Thirsty, Tired and Thinner.
Knowing the symptoms is so important to prevent Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA), which happens when there’s a severe lack of insulin in the body - so it can happen if type 1 diabetes isn't spotted early.

📢 If you’re already familiar with the 4Ts, will you share this post to make sure more people know the signs of type 1 diabetes?

John (pictured right) cycled over 1,000 miles from Land's End to John o' Groats alongside his friends Paul and Greg.

A couple of years ago, Paul (pictured left) was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. That's why John, who celebrated his birthday in May, decided to organise this epic challenge in support of Prostate Cancer UK, asking for donations instead of gifts.

Together, the trio raised a staggering £7,000 to help fund lifesaving research and save men’s lives 👏

Today is World Day.

Anyone can drown, no one should. Drowning prevention starts with you:

👀 Supervise children & don’t look away when they're near water.
🦺 Use safety equipment like life jackets & make sure they’re in place before going out on a boat.
🏊‍♂️ Learn to swim, or if you can’t swim, stay away from the water.
🌧️ Check the weather conditions, the depth of the water & the strength of the current before entering the water.
🚫 Don’t drink alcohol near water, it dulls your senses & can cause fatal accidents near water.

Remember! Drowning is often silent & goes unnoticed. Watch for the signs when someone is struggling to stay afloat, it’s never too soon to respond.

NHS Grampian is one of the last health boards in Scotland to benefit from an in-house sewing room team, who are now setting a leading example of how others could make do and mend, saving huge amounts of energy and money.

The health board’s laundry service quality checks around 145,000 items of bedding, towels, curtains and other things coming through the laundry every week, including 35,000 sets of scrubs! When hundreds of these fail a quality check, they are sent to the sewing room to work out if they can be repaired or repurposed.

The talented tailors who repair as much as they can and repurpose the rest have now been presented with a Green Star Award 💚🌟 for their efforts to reduce the health board’s impact on the environment.

They use techniques like heat sealing small holes in sheets and bedding, sewing buttons back onto pyjamas or fixing pockets and hems. They re-use tiers for repairs and no part of items are condemned without first trying to fix or re-purpose them. The five-strong sewing team even tear old sheets into strips to wrap bundles of new uniforms into batches for collection. They make drain bags for chemo patients and chop up materials to make rags for use by other estates teams. If services are facing a costly bill to replace specialist clothing or covers, materials are sent to the sewing team to see if they can fix them first. The team even repair the linen skips used all over the organisation in the movement of clean and dirty linen.

Linen services manager, Lynn Christie explained: “We have an incredibly busy workshop and we’re super proud of the team who I’d say are the backbone of the organisation. Services reach out to us regularly to help them and the sewing team could be fixing specialist suits for burns patients one day to adjusting decontamination suits the next.

“There’s a lot of hidden expertise, and skills that aren’t so easy to come by these days, that deserves recognition and we are so pleased to accept this award. Having a modern apprentice within the team would be a good way to make sure we retain the skills and this is something we are looking into.”

The team also fit all staff with uniforms, tailoring leg length to the individual and ensuring the correct fit. More than 2,000 new and existing staff all across NHS Grampian are fitted by the sewing team every year. They are so highly regarded they are currently providing uniforms for all international recruits to health boards across the North of Scotland too.

Lynn added: “Uniform provision is a complex job ensuring all staff are in correct denomination of job according to NHS Scotland national uniform policy. Everyone now has a card so we can keep track and there’s traceability for every single staff member. This helps to keep waste to a minimum too, also reducing service spend.”

Gavin Payne, general manager of facilities and estates, visited the team to see the weekly challenge they take on first-hand. He said: “The volume of material the team gets through is mind-blowing. They’re doing an incredible range of work to promote re-use, repair and recycle, and we’re keen to share their mindful approach with other teams. They are well-deserving recipients of the Green Star Award. Well done, folks!”

Coughs are irritating – they can disturb your sleep and make you feel quite unwell at times. But how can you tell the difference between a short-term cough or whooping cough? Read on to find out more. 👇

Whooping cough is a highly contagious bacterial infection of the lungs and airways. Also known as pertussis, it is frequently described as the 100-day cough.

The first symptoms of whooping cough include:
👃 runny nose
👁️ red and watery eyes
😩 sore throat
🤒 a slightly raised temperature

Intense bouts of coughing then begin around a week later. Coughing symptoms at this stage include:
✔️ bouts lasting a few minutes at a time
✔️ more common at night time
✔️ bringing up thick mucus
✔️ can cause vomiting
✔️ gasping for breath between coughs, which may cause a 'whoop' sound (not everyone has this)

Whooping cough can affect people of any age, although young babies under 6 months of age are at a particularly increased risk of complications. Treatment depends on the age of the patient and how long they have had the infection.

Vaccination can protect babies and children from whooping cough. The vaccine is offered to:
🔹 women after the 16th week of pregnancy
🔹 babies at 8, 12 and 16 weeks of age (the 6-in-1 vaccine)
🔹 children by 3 years and 4 months (the 4-in-1 pre-school booster)

Find out more about when to seek help for whooping cough and details on the whooping cough vaccine by visiting NHS inform - useful links in comments!

Love that feeling of the sand between your toes?

Being bare foot on Scotland’s beaches and shores can be enjoyable in the milder weather, but it can also increase the risk of being stung by wildlife like jellyfish, sea urchins, or weever fish.

If you’re stung, you should:

✅Rinse the affected area with sea water (not fresh water).
✅Remove any spines or stings with tweezers – do not use your bare hands.
✅Soak the site in warm water (as warm as you can tolerate).
✅Take painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen to manage pain.

Most stings from sea creatures in Scotland are mild and can be safely self-managed, but you should phone 111 if you have:
🔹severe pain that’s not going away
🔹been stung on your face or ge****ls (OUCH! 😵)
🔹been stung by a stingray

If you have been stung and have:
🔹difficulty breathing
🔹chest pain
🔹fits or seizures
🔹severe swelling around the affected area
🔹 severe bleeding
🔹vomiting
🔹light-headedness or loss of consciousness
Always phone 999 or attend A&E as soon as possible.
