Myopia, better known as short-sightedness, is the most common eye disorder in children. Myopia affects your vision, quality of life and increases eye health risks across your lifetime.

Myopia typically starts before the age of 10 and then deteriorates until it stabilises in their late teens or early 20s.

Your child is twice as likely to have myopia if one parent has it, and five times more likely to have myopia when both parents are short-sighted.

Myopia control treatments are available to slow down the progression, or worsening, of childhood myopia. These include spectacle lenses and contact lenses.

Increasing the time your child spends outdoors to around 2 hours per day can help delay the progression of myopia. While holding books and digital devices up close for long durations can increases the risks of myopia.

Can children wear contact lenses?
Yes, there is no set age limit for children wearing contact lenses, but you should consider whether you child is suitably responsible. Do the follow instructions well? Do you need to remind them to do chores? Your child must be able to learn how to insert and remove the lenses, keep them clean and follow a regular wear schedule. Speak to us if you/your child is considering contact lenses.
