My Favourite Chair - Upholstery
Modern and traditional upholstery. Soft furnishing and furniture upcycling.
Well, that’s a wrap for classes for the summer holidays! We celebrated a hugely productive year with a lovely meal out last night which was just brilliant. What a fabulous bunch of ladies 🥰. Swipe for some of their beautiful work ❤️. Have a great summer everyone x
Two recent jobs that went back to their owner last week. Beautiful leather from and brass decorative nails from . I love the recliner. It’s so unique and very comfortable 😀
No chairs or upholstery to post about today. Instead, here are some pictures of the beautiful bike ride we went on. Part of it was on the Buchan and Formartine way (disused rail line) from Maud to Auchnagatt and was gorgeous. Amazing scenery, well kept paths, some highland coo’s and a tailwind 👍. The rest was on back roads which were quiet and the view was incredible. We rewarded ourselves with a Magnum at Granny’s house. Perfect 😍.
Another chair revamped and out the door 😍. This one tested me though. Getting those sections pulled tight and working out wrinkles took several attempts. However I did learn the importance of taking a step away to think about things. After sleeping on it (not literally) I came back fresh and with a plan and nailed it.
I guess it’s also a reminder that sometimes figuring out how to recover a tricky chair can take time. Mass produced chairs are made super quick, mainly because the upholsterers have made hundreds of them and have become very fast at that particular style. However, for us, with most chairs, it’s the first time, every time. So it takes longer, which means the costs are higher. But there’s also more thought and consideration put into each one 😍.
Big shout out to Omega II Velvet. It was handled A LOT and has come out the other side absolutely perfect with no crush marks of any kind 👍.
This lovely two seater went back to its owner yesterday. I love the detail on the cushions which was on the original cover so I thought I’d carry it over to the new cover ☺️
I have been super quiet on social media lately. Mainly because I have been rather busy with this giant of a job. A four module sofa plus a separate two seater sofa. All loose covers plus the 14 box cushions!! Phew! Thankfully the fabric was a dream so I really enjoyed the project and am delighted with the result.
For my customer, it was initially a choice between getting a new sofa for their conservatory and having this one, which they loved, recovered. Obviously, they went for the latter and they are very happy that they made that decision. A quick search for mid range modular sofas online tells me that the cost of recovering is actually less than it would have been to buy new. Plus, that’s one less sofa going to the tip. That’s a win in my book 🎉.
A big thank you to my customers who were very patient throughout this project. They’ll know what I’m talking about 😜

I LOVE this sofa! It was really quite tired on the outside but the frame was in brilliant condition, having been really well made. So, it’s had new padding all over, a few spring fixes, new cushions and of course some beautiful new fabric from . It’s owners were quite astonished when they came to collect it 😍. It was an absolute delight to work on 😁.
Two chairs all spruced up and returned to their owner. I began sanding the wood down. However after a visit from Callum of CM Joinery, I adopted the much cleaner, quieter and far more satisfying method of removing the old varnish - scraping it off with a razor blade. Wow! What a difference. I hope to never sand anything again now that I know how to do this! The rest of the chair has been stripped to the frame and given completely new padding and cushion. The fabric is from and is Cosmos Orion in Midnight. Lovely 😍

See the information below but feel free to message me if you are interested or if you have any questions 😊.
Come along to upholstery classes in a friendly and relaxed environment. I will teach you the skills needed to bring your favourite piece of furniture back to life. In my workshop near Barthol Chapel, I have all the tools and materials that you will need to complete your project. All you need to bring is your piece of furniture and the fabric to cover it in. All other materials are available and charged at trade price.
Class sizes are small so you will get plenty of tuition time.
The class is suitable for beginner or intermediate levels of experience however, if you are a beginner a dining chair or a footstool would be a great choice for a first project.
I have been doing upholstery for almost 10 years now and finished my diploma in upholstery in 2021 with the Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers. I have since gone on to become a journeyman member of the Guild of Traditional Upholsterers and run a successful upholstery business from my workshop near Barthol Chapel. I have been teaching upholstery for almost 5 years and am experienced in both modern and traditional upholstery styles.
So come and learn a new skill, get to know like minded people and enjoy a cuppa and a fine piece at break time. I might even bake from time to time!.
Be cautious though – upholstery is addictive. You have been warned!

I’ve just finished this Parker Knoll 757/8/9/60. The leather is Old English from and the dog tooth check is Usawa from
The leather was lovely to work with. However it takes a bit of getting used to and a fair bit of elbow grease! It’s harder to pull tight than fabric! I’m delighted with the result though 🤩.
What a chilly weekend 🥶. So instead of staying indoors with the fire on like normal, sensible people, we went out to the workshop and made a new cushion for the gorgeous telephone table that we bought at a few weeks ago (the first picture is of us making the purchase at their fab shop in Balmedie). My wee helper did all the overlocking and we now have a lovely new cushion. We also went for a nice frosty walk 😊.
When these Greaves and Thomas chairs arrived they had just narrowly escaped the skip! However with some expert restoration from Callum at Joinery, they have been brought back to life and are beautiful again. I had the honour of making them comfortable and have recovered them in Orkney Boucle in Champagne from
Their owner is delighted. Next up is the matching divan. Watch this space!
It’s taken a wee while but this beautifully sumptuous chair is finally back with its owner😃.
The Golden Oriole velvet from paired with Omega Velvet in pitch from were a fabulous choice.
My first ever pumpkin pie was a success! Even the kids ate it. Now that’s a seal of approval 😆.
It’s :). This was my 3rd year traditional piece. Reupholstered from the frame up. Loved it!!
When I first saw this big sofa cushion, I have to admit, I wasn’t sure it was going to be possible to fix it up. I reached out for advice from the online upholstery community and while a few said that it would be tricky but possible, more than a few said ‘RUN’! 😆. Well, I like a challenge so I took it on and it turned out to be a very enjoyable project. Lots of faith (from my customer mostly ;)) and good use of my problem solving skills and we now have a revitalised and comfortable sofa. It’s covered in Harris Tweed with faux leather buttons.
Here is a picture of a giant cushion that I am recovering for a sofa. Everyone I’ve shown this picture to so far says it looks like a dog bed. Which it does! Swipe for a picture with a small dog for scale 😆. Not a dog bed 😜.
This Tetrad chair came to me with a big hole in the seat. The customer bought replacement fabric direct from and it looks fantastic! The arms were still in good condition so have been left but the rest of the fabric had to be stripped off and a bit of new padding applied to plump it up a bit. I think I improved on the piping on the inside back around the arms. On the original it had disappeared into the gap between the arm and back :(. Happy customer 😊
** A space has become available in the Monday morning class, 10 - 1pm. **

The “Dog”. I’m not sure if that is the actual manufacturers name for this quirky little footstool or an affectionate name given by it’s owners. Either way, it has been well used and was looking very tired. Now it has a new coat of Isle Mill wool blend fabric with coordinating zip. A very satisfying trip to the groomers.
A full makeover for this comfy armchair. The cushions had wadding in them so that has been replaced with feathers for plumpness. The fabric is Faroe in Spice and it is very nice to work with and looks great too ☺️. Happy chair, happy customer, just happy 😁.
I love these bright and cheerful chairs! Absolutely brilliant fabric choice by my customer 😍.

A little sneaky peak of something to come. It’s just waiting for it’s legs which I can confirm are NOT going to be brown 😜.
