Spent the morning creating Story Time events on Woodbridge Books. I created banners for each author event, made sure their books were listed on the website. And I’ve also added some leather bookmarks to the site as well.

In 2023, I'm going to start building a lot more public APIs that developers can pay to create their own websites and software with.

I've been developing with third party APIs for literally ages but have never managed my own. So this has been an exciting new venture.

I have a new client project which requires me to build a public API, so learning how Rapid works has been very useful.

Rapid are a provider of the world’s largest API Hub. Rapid offers an API platform that enables developers and enterprises to find, connect to, and manage APIs across multiple environments.

My first API is for Gambles.me - a horse racing website I run. All the data is now available for anybody to access.

I'm beginning the process of migrating client websites over from our current hosting provider to cloudabove.

Cloudabove provide cloud servers and are based out of Newquay. They plant trees, have a 5 star rating on Google and are super helpful. I mean super super helpful. They have been tremendous thus far.

I've invested in their top teir server - because we all want fast response times - and our current host is not delivering that.

I'm also able to install custom software on my server which isn't allowed with our current provider. Cloudabove have installed MQTT for me, which I'm planning on building some amazing things with.

I'm excited! If someone is desperate to move to our new hosting please let me know, and I will prioritise you.

Important information regarding email.

"We are seeing issues with mailbox connections affecting multiple mail servers on our shared hosting platform. This is being investigated and is affecting webmail and email client connectivity.

We do not have an ETA currently, we will update the status page as soon as more information is available."

I've never been happy with WooCommerce's (lack of) search, so this week I've written my own and deployed it on Woodbridge Books.

A user can now filter results by interest age, author, publisher, category and price.

Susie at Woodbridge Books can customise a search results page with her own recommendations and a header image too.

We're gearing up for Christmas and want to make it easier for people to find the perfect book. So, I hope these changes will have a positive impact.

I sincerely apologise, but at 5am (Sunday) all sites on our hosting became inactive. I've tracked down the issue and have resolved it.

It's been a busy few weeks completing and deploying various websites and helping migrate another.

Alongside it I've been looking at how I build websites, so I can turn them around quicker whilst maintaining the quality

I've developed a plugin I call Theme Helper that will provide the functionality to all of our WordPress Themes. Functionality such as; displaying testimonials, hero images, meet the team pages, services and that sort of thing.

These things we tend to add to every website, and most of the time I'm just duplicating the code and adding it to the Theme.

Now with a central code base, I can work on new updates and releases and deploy them our client's website via our new Update Server.

I donned my hacker uniform today to crack some code I’ve been working on for days.

I’ve been using nodeJS, openstreetmap and openlayers to plot farmer’s fields in order to save their coordinates and calculate the area in hectares.

The user draws a polygon on the map to mark out their field. It automatically calculates the hectares and saves it all to the database. Then it can pull it from the database and redraw the polygon.

These APIs were all new to me, so it took a bit of learning.

Here’s my proud face.

Woodbridge Emporium went down today because the database size exceeded the limit. It had grown to around 4GB in size.

Tonight, my apprentice and I download the backed up database to a local installation of Linux. We then ran some SQL to work out the file sizes of each table in the database. One particular table, wp_wocommerce_sessions, had grown to a whopping 3.5GB. This table stores past and present shopping baskets. The rest of the database normally totals around 250mb.

It took a long time to download, a long time to import into our local copy - meanwhile little apprentice fell asleep. It then took an age to delete everything from the problem table.

Then I had to upload the SQL file into a new remote database… however the file was 25mb and the server only allows 16mb to be uploaded.

Rather than trouble the host to increase the upload limit and further delay downtime, I split the sql file into 24 files. I’ve just finished uploading them and have switched Woodbridge Emporium to look at the new database.

Going forward the site will now routinely manage the basket session table so this does not happen again.

Sorry for the downtime. I’m glad I got it fixed tonight as I have a large project I’m working on at the moment for a farmer.
