Happy Summer Solstice!
To celebrate both the astronomical start of summer and the end of my chronic vitamin D deficiency, I got up before the lark on this morning of the Longest Day to bring some flowers into your lives. Jam jar and milk bottle posies are out for sale today! £5.95 & £3.95 respectively.

As local as it gets, all blooms were sown and grown right here. The clear glass jam jars that hold the posies are at least 60 years old. They were painstakingly dug up last winter from a 1950s/60s bottle dump not far away - by my own muddy hands. “Floristry” doesn’t get more sustainable than this! 😊

The jam jars should fit neatly into the cup-holder of your car, so your flowers will travel home quite happily - just don’t leave them in a hot car for too long. Top-up the water level when you get home, and then change it after a couple of days as this will prolong their vase life. When the flowers finally fade, please bring the glass jars back to me, re-use them yourself, or re-cycle them.

ULEZ UPDATE

Having personally tested it at least 338 times since the ULEZ extension was introduced, I can categorically confirm that there are no ULEZ cameras on the way if you are coming to us from a southerly direction – i.e. coming up Westerham Hill. We spotted a mobile camera van lurking twice, but they have been nowhere to be seen on this bit of the Main Road for the last few months.

We, and the handful of other businesses this Westerham Hill end, are relatively fortunate to be situated right on the edge of the extension, and so are saved from the evil eye of the cameras. Of course, it has had an impact on us too – but our hearts go out to those small independent businesses further into Biggin Hill and beyond who have been more severely affected. Sending love & support to them this Valentine’s Day.

Job vacancies at Kingsmead Equestrain Centre (Warlingham, Surrey)

Part time position on our horse/ client care team at weekends and in the evening.

As a busy riding school we have a large number of horses to prepare for lessons and to provide after care for. We need someone who is skilled at tacking up a variety of horses in a range of tack and assisting riders as they prepare to mount and whilst getting on.

You must be confident with horses and with our clients who vary in age from 3 - 73yrs.

You must be attentive to the horses, know how to tack up correctly, with an excellent eye for detail and be engaging with our clients.

Hours to be agreed ( must include at least one weekend shift, a minimum of 4 hours).

Part time position in our busy office

We are looking for someone to work in the office, during the week with occasional weekend cover.

The job is varied although your primary role will be communication with our clients via email to responding to telephone calls and supporting our online booking service. An understanding of horses/ riding is important as are excellent communication skills.

We are looking for someone for 12-15 hrs per week; can be during school hours ( although you will need to be available during school holidays). Must be able to offer occasional weekend cover by arrangement.

The above jobs can be combined to create a full time job for the right person.

Competitive pay for the right person (plus we offer a riding discount). Must be reliable.

We are based in Warlingham CR6 ( just outside ULEZ).

FAREWELL TO OUR LOVELY LASS!
Devon was just a little girl like this when, for some unfathomable reason, she made up her mind that she wanted to work at Baverstock when she was old enough. Always a determined young lady, she finally got her wish when she was fifteen, and she joined the team, initially as our Saturday girl.

Over the last 13 years, Devon has become an irreplaceable, ridiculously-strong and much-loved member of staff. As a small business who puts the emphasis on a family atmosphere, we have really enjoyed watching her grow up into an independent lady – one who has now found “her people” within the Deaf Community. We are both very fond, and very proud of her, and though we will miss her dreadfully, we fully support her in her next steps towards gaining additional qualifications in sign language.

Devon’s last day with us will be Saturday 16th September. We know that many customers will be very sorry to see her go too, so please give her your good wishes if you see her, or comment on here if you don’t manage to catch her before she leaves.

We will all miss your smile, Devon. 😊 Good luck – and may your future be happy and fulfilled.
