Jamie’s Story

Jamie was born in Kettering as the youngest of four children. He was raised in a single-parent family where he was influenced by hard work, laughter and love.

Jamie has lived in Kettering all of his life. At 12 years old in 1997 he began washing up at Clays Butchers in the town across the road from the Post office where his mum and sister and brother worked. It was here that his sister began a relationship with the area manager Dejon. Dejon soon acquired premises in the town centre 11 gold street and called it Palmers Butchers. Jamie was a Saturday boy there and also went in after school every day to wash up!

By the time he was 14 Jamie had become very fond of the trade and knew that this is what he wanted to do as a career. He was still at school at the time but left early, he struggled to stay focused in class knowing that he had the opportunity to be an apprentice in the butcher’s full time when he left. Even at the young age of 15 all he wanted to do was work and start learning the trade. Jamie left school early with no formal qualifications.

Jamie loved working full time in Palmers and learnt a lot by watching the experienced butchers in the shop. He was able to pick up good habits and draw upon the knowledge and expertise of others. In time this would help him to become his own version of the best butcher he could be.

Dejon became Jamie’s brother-in-law/father figure as well as his boss and mentor. He acknowledges that he has been very fortunate in being able to learn from one of the best and most successful butchers in the country. This did often bring with it some challenges as there were times that he faced hostility from other workers because of the family link to the owner and over the years there have been many disagreements and comments that he has had to rise above. Jamie quickly learnt that he had to maintain a positive and optimistic outlook if he was going to achieve his dream of having his own shop one day. Working 6/7 days a week his whole life, His passion for butchery and will to succeed meant that he could overcome the tough times both inside and outside of work.

Over time and in operating in partnership with Dejon, Jamie gradually increased his skills and responsibilities at Palmers. Today, ‘Jamie’s’ Butchers is thriving. He has expanded the butchers to include fruit, vegetables and a café. Jamie has progressed from being a pot washer, to Saturday boy, to butcher, to manager, to shareholder, to director and now sole owner of his own business. He is rightly proud and full of gratitude each day to be able to do a job he loves with the freedom to impart his ideas and creative flair into his own business. Jamie has become a well-known and respected member of our community. He is a very likeable and charismatic man with a great sense of humour and it is clear to see that his customers, family, staff and friends think very fondly of him and enjoy being in his company.

Jamie is ambitious, brave and committed to developing himself both personally and professionally. This is balanced by his kind and compassionate nature and his generosity. Since taking over the business he has given regular contributions to many local charities and good causes . Currently, his focus is on giving produce to Kettering and surrounding areas to our brave key workers and to local residential care homes for our most vulnerable in the midst of the Covd-19 pandemic.

Jamie is a family man and when he isn’t working, he spends his time with his partner Chelsea and his children Tyler, Ashton and Emelie and hopes for another child to complete his family so that one day he can pass the business down to all four of them to see them out their retirements and hopefully hand down to their children and keep the Jamie's brand going forever .
