Meet Indy and Faith they are our new sponsorship for my treatments .

Indigo is an ex polo pony , he is 15,3 12 year old crillio and has had a busy life !

Faith and indigo currently compete at Trec during the summer as well as hunter trials also taking part in regular lessons and clinics. In the winter period they continue to do Trec and also some hunting.

Indy has has a long past of injuries in the pat 4 years and has recovered from a suspensory ligament injury and fractured pedal bone.

He generally lives out all year and loves his work.

I did a full assessment Palpation, gait analysis and found he was slightly lop sided on the right , his Tmj area and Jaw was misaligned and his right eye was prominent and nostril was being pulled distally to the poll.

He held a lot of tension in the thoracic vertebrae along the Longissimus dorsi to the lumbosascal joint where around his Tuber coxae and glutes and tensor fascia latae were in spasm , but not causing any serious discomfort.

I started by working cranially on releasing some of the soft tissue tension around the tmj, mandible , hyoid and poll area slowly working my way along the Cervical vertebrae to the joint of the thoracic ribcage and around the biceps, he had some nice releases there and the muscles responded and softened. Working throughout the neck muscles, splenius , rhomboids so that the body could prepare for deeper work.

I used myofascial release to allow the fascia and muscles to unwind through the back and used compression techniques so that the pelvis muscles and psoas could de stress and relax.

This created more freedom through his back , he was a little tight and hollow throughout and by allowing the muscles and soft tissue some space his body was able to retain a better posture.

You could see this in his first treatment. After treatment we did a walk and trot assessment to see any improvement and he was much more active and balanced in his gait with good swing throgh his ribcage .

Faith had a treatment as you can see in the previous video on my post. Her posture improved and she was walking so much better.

Feedback after treatment!

Direct message from Faith.

Morning Becky, sorry for my delayed reply. Indy feels amazing! Had a great time out cubbing with him on Saturday morning. He has so much more freedom in his movement! It's amazing!! He had Sunday off, a little hack on Monday and i lunged him for about 30mins yesterday. I'm making sure I play more ground work into his routine!! Plan on riding again today. Me on the other hand 😂 my right hip, knee and shoulders have given me a lot of grief over the weekend but started to ease on Monday and feeling much better today. I do feel a lot more comfortable and not as stiff however. My other half keeps saying to me that my posture has improved a lot! So thank you so much! I am so fascinated by the changes in the both of us!!! Thanks! X

Faith is my sponsor for the human treatments , her horse Indy will be having 3 treatments so we can see how they improve .

Before and after treatment of body alignment. This is a non evasive technique that works with the piezoelectric , soft tissue and cranium, Pelvis and psoas to create a better balanced body for riding and everyday activities.

Each cell is a living organism in the body creating us and having a big job to do ro keep us alive, in fact round 50 trillion of them! All packed around our skin, soft tissue, muscles, bones , brain etc

When we are impacted with day to day stresses of life including our mental health this will also have an impact on our bodies, creating tension, misalignments and emotional stress that if we don't recognise can cause pain and stop us from functioning correctly.

As a muscular therapist for horses I have adapted this treatment using gentle hand placements on the person's body allowing for free movement and restoration and alignment facilitating the fascia and redirecting the cranial flow to better balance. Typically one treatment takes about an hour with optional consultation to aid in relieving anxiety, stress and also ease depression.

Some of the common ailments you as a rider may have that this can help with are as follows

*Emotional stress, anxiety, tension, unable to breathe comfortably, compression and knots in the body, unlevelness sore muscles and stuck unlevel body posture,

Body pain, Headaches pelvic and hip problems, brain fog . Old injuries.

These are just some if the common problems this technique can help release.

When we ride we need a positive attitude to our riding and good posture otherwise this can cause tension in your own horse leading to muscular imbalances and soft tissue problems. So we need to ensure we are looking after ourselves not just our horses !

For more information on my treatments please message me . Combined treatments for horse and rider available

My treatments can be done at your yard in the stable with minimal equipment.

Spot the difference just one treatment?

Can you find your horses compensatory pattern? Every horse has one! Even healthy horses!

Give this a go ! Grab a pen and paper and connect the lines together where you think your horses compensatory pattern is . Print out this picture

Take a look at your horse both sides on the left and right and compare anything that sticks out more one side than the other, make a note of it .

*The head are the fascial bones both the same left and right? Check medially, is one nostril higher than the other , is the Jaw centered ? Are the cheekbones the same or are they different in any way, how about the eyes are they the same , and ears ? Look for any lumps and bumps that may stick out slightly and around the tmj. The Jaw just above the eye notice any unlevelness or asymmetric imbalances. The ears place your fingers above the poll and place a finger next to the occipital ridge can you feel more space on one side than the other?

*The neck take a look for dips lumps and bumps, down to the shoulder can you see any muscular tension in this area, is one part of the Cervical vertebrae shearing or prodtuding more bi laterally? Are the muscles the same on both sides or is one area less or more than the other side?

Run your hands over the neck can you feel any tight spots, note them!

The shoulders and withers where the saddle fits there always seems to be some muscle atrophy you can see by standing on a bucket etc and standing behind to see if both sides are equal. Be careful,!

Have a feel and observe any unlevelness around the breastbone, pectorials, and feel for anything that isn't the same.

*The thoracic cavity , the spine , and the ribcage do the same technique as with the shoulders see if your horses spine is straight , or shearing to one side does he or she have a hump in the lumbar region is the back nice and soft or is there tightness along the outer areas of the back muscles gently zig zag your hand along there muscles between the spine and ribcage where the saddle fits is there any tension? Did the soft tissue in that area twitch. Run your hand dorsally (top) to ventrally (bottom) and see if you can feel any indiferences in bone , soft tissue etc. Note them .

*Pelvic area and hind limbs do the same paying attention to anything that is not equal to the other side , any muscular tightness , hypertrophy or atrophy , any lumps or bumps and so on. Plus the tail is your horses tail going to one side. Make a note

*Examine the front limbs for any lumps and bumps , and all four hooves ! Do they all look the same?

Once you have gathered all your information line up from anterior cranially to the posterior of the horse.

You have now created your horses muscular compensatory pattern! Well done!

What does this mean, it gives you an idea of where the restricted area are relating to muscles , bones and fascia , which is all led by the brain on a neurological level , signals are sent from that particular stuck area of tension to the brain telling the body to change the pathway through out the body and to protect that area from more tension etc to find an alternative way of functioning so that the muscles, bones, and soft tissue can still function. This means the more the body has to change the more compensation and eventually will lead to more problems within the body of the horse! If not treated,

This does not only affect the muscles this also can affect the visceral/abdominal cavity too causing stress , and ulcers etc

Everything needs balance and without balance somethings gonna break down eventually!

However this may sound scary or negative this is a great way of keeping your horses health in check so that you can do something about it if something doesn't look or feel right .

On a positive note creating change in the body overall where there is tension means you can pin point the area that's causing all the trouble and bring back to balance , fab stuff !

Gasps! Muscles change through movement local and global depending on the work and environment they are in , however every person, animal and living thing has a compensatory pattern! Some change for the better some don't, it's just a matter of observation and learning. Stress also and even lack of doing no excercise will have a pattern .

Send me your findings and I will give you a free assessment on your notes!

Use the pics below to graph your horses body pattern .

For correct musculature and strength for self carriage requires 100% commitment from the riders body not the hands! The core muscles need to be able to move freely through the back and from the hindquarters , without restriction, however this also depends on the tack being used as well as the riders posture and correct balance , leg aids with no tension. Putting pressure on the horses mouth in any bit will only bring about a false connection and cranially can damage the hyoid , poll the axial of the Cervical vertebrae which through out will decrease performance with harmful maybe irreversible damage.

Careful training needs to be established from both horse and rider both with free movement and tesegrity, muscles don't just fix themselves nor do they become stronger using incorrect or improper training.

Muscles need to be allowed to grow stronger by introducing groundwork first before progressing onto more technical and lateral work this all should be done in a whisper , a breath without enforcement.

Incorrect bitting and heavy use of unnatural contact will damage the Temporal-mandibular joint this is a very sensitive area where the jaw joins the skull and where the cranial nerves and other important nerves and muscles attach to the poll junction. This can practically shut a horse down , on a cellular level this changes the way the horse is able to perform and behave and how the body as a whole responds just by incorrect pressure !

Fascia , soft tissue , nerves , bones, muscles , emotional and physical senses will have to compensate for the abnormalities created , the horse may seem ok but internally the body's functional systems are having to rewire due to the extra strain and stress on the body so that the horse can still function!

Ask yourself are you happy with a horse that works this way ? I hope not !
Are you aware of how the horses body responds to incorrect training ? Are you aware that certain bodywork techniques can help improve tension and relieve sore muscles when in training ? Be vigilant in your methods and always ask yourself if your doing the correct training for your horse!

Knowing Fit vs Knowing How to Fit

There is a major difference between understanding fit, and understanding the mechanics of how to fit. The first is something every single horse person should know, regardless of discipline, level or ambitions. Understanding fit plays two essential roles, the first is to protect the rider and allows them to properly vet saddle fitters that they may call out to service a saddle. The second is that it protects the horse from suffering in silence, allowing the rider to identify saddle fit as a potential cause of unwanted behaviors or injuries such as blisters, white hairs, dry spots, sores, etc.

Knowing Fit is straight forward, and available to everyone at absolutely no charge. It follows the 9 points of saddle fitting as described in our videos.
1 - Balance of the saddle
2 - Wither clearance (top and sides)
3 - Gullet channel width
4 - Panel contact
5 - Billet alignment
6 - Saddle length
7 - Saddle straightness
8 - Tree angle
9 - Tree width

With these videos, you can accurately assess the fit of your saddle without any tools other than 2 basic ballpoint pens, and a piece of chalk.

Just got this lovely message from one of my Customers

Hi Becky ,Very well done , you must be relieved after all your hard work.
Both horses are really well thank you. I am really pleased that the improvement we have seen after you worked your magic is still there . His left shoulder is still good , every time the trimmer comes she is amazed that she can get under that leg as he used to be so stiff . We also have an amazing walk he seems to be swinging more through his back.
I put Scout on the Equinutritive for oldies as I had purchased it for Conker and He seems brighter .
I am really happy with both of them for the moment but will be in touch with you again once Christmas is out of the way to get you to give them a once over .
I was the lucky one to have all you knowledge and time , so the thank you is on me x

Interesting read!

All the theories in the world do not change what bones (and muscles when it is alive) reveal about how a horse lived and was ridden.

This thoracic vertebra shows how the facets remodeled to compensate for this horse's crookedness. This bone was presented by Dr Kerry Ridgway, Equine Therapeutic Options at a symposium in 2012 but his lesson stand today.

Understanding the horse’s spinal alignment and how to create good posture is how a rider can truly benefit his horse's health and well being, and thus improve his/her performance.

To create good spinal alignment requires we understand and work on independent balance, suppleness and straightness without over flexing the horse’s spine horizontally (neither inverting nor hyperflexing it ) or laterally or generally riding it crooked, blocking it or torquing it.

Straightness means even-ness, symmetry, ambidexterity: the even development of both halves of the horse which allows it to use all its muscles and joints equally without taxing one more than another.

Spinal health requires the rider remain aware at all times of the inner structure of the horse, of its bones, joints, nerves, muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia and the need to maintain or enhance their integrity, strength, flexibility and stability.

Think about what happens to bones, healthy and not so healthy when you add the concussive force of movement. This will be the subject of another post.

To learn how to develop good posture and movement in-hand and under saddle, visit www.manolomendezdressage.com and have a look at our downloadable free articles and introduction to in-hand work dvd.

Repost from 2013.
