Hull's quirkiest garden centre!

31/08/2024

Today 31st August 2024

I’ve been trading on Chants Ave for around 14 years, I’ve met hundreds of people over the years, some you see once and never again, some become regular customers and some friends 🥰.

One such person I met as a customer around ten years ago, he came in and bought quite a few plants, he had a small garden and lived locally, we had a shared passion for Chess and when he challenged me to a game - we sat one day playing for hours in the shed, I beat him once but he hammered me lots and lots of times 😂.

We used to go out drinking and for meals, we didn’t always see eye to eye but we remained good friends, I last saw him around 4 weeks ago when he popped in to buy a hanging basket and one of my little wooden hanging basket men - which I delivered - he was sunbathing on his roof that day😊. He was a real character and I know he will be missed on Chanterlands Avenue because he believed in shopping locally.

This morning one of his neighbours came in to tell me he had passed away at home 3 weeks ago - very sad and I will miss him

Rest in peace Nick Olofson - thank you for your friendship 🙏🥲

Baaa humbug!!!

Yes it’s the freedom festival this weekend - started on Thursday and it runs through to Sunday (inc)

Went to Pearson park for a cup of tea and an ice cream at Pennas after work yesterday - there lying on the counter was a brochure for Freedom Festival 2024 - the greatest show on earth!!

I sat down and flicked through the pages looking for something, anything which grabbed my attention - there’s nothing - so I probably won’t bother going, which is disappointing because it’s the only event put on in Hull for the whole year. O apart from Fest and I’ve only been once and never again.

Someone from freedom festival has just messaged me Circa not to be missed tickets £31.50 😂 - so won’t be going after all. I’m disillusioned 🤷‍♂️

I travel up and down the country Leeds, Lincoln, London, blackpool, Bournemouth Brighton and York - these cities always have something going on every day/week. Take blackpool for instance - two weeks ago the free airshow - Blackpool was absolutely packed - I’ve never seen so many people there - tills ringing people having a good time, last Tuesday night again Blackpool - “ride the lights” great free event which attracts people from across the country. Lincoln steampunk festival last weekend - didn’t go as had to look after my mum - but a cracking event.

We have a run down city centre, it has little or no retail, someone trying to buck the trend is up against it from the start - no footfall no point. Bums on seats is what counts - get something going on in Hull that people want to see and will travel across the country for. I won’t travel to freedom fest and I’m only in walking distance. I’m sure and hope I’m wrong and yes Freedom Fest will be a big success.

Wishing you a good weekend - I will be open on Saturday 11-4 but closed Sunday.

So here we are again. I know this chap , met him a few times - he’s what I’d call old school a bit like me - probably around my age perhaps a few years older. He’s always been kind to me and although he shares race hate on his page I’ve allowed it to wash over. I was reflecting today and wondered if I asked him why he was a racist what his response would be.

So here we are this is the conversation until I got blocked. This man has no answer - if he had an answer he would of put it forward with conviction.

I’d say next time you meet someone that’s racist - ask them why. The only way to break down this hate is to talk about it.

Open tomorrow 12-4 - a few house plants to add to the £2.99 4 for £10 deal - the traditional Prayer Plant.

If it’s not one thing it’s another 🙄

So Summers face seemed swollen on Friday morning didn’t look too bad thought may be an insect bite, had planned to take them to Blackpool for the weekend - so packed their buckets and spades and off we went. Saturday morning Summer couldn’t open her right eye - so found an emergency vets in Blackpool - the care was excellent - they gave her some medication and pain relief and after a few hours her eye was open again, swelling had gone down and she seemed to be ok, however now she couldn’t open her mouth wide and when trying to was yelping in pain, so Monday back to emergency vet, as she had something to eat - fast period meant booking her locally today - so currently she is at End Cottage vets in Howden - will have to have a general anaesthetic - had to leave her there - never left her anywhere before - reminded my of dropping the daughters at nursery 🥲🙏

So will walk Ambrose and should be open 12-4 today unless we hear anything from Summer

All lives matter

Wether your for Racism or against think very carefully. Future protests are to be met with the full force of the law.

What does this mean? A fast tracked custodial sentence - no time to pack or say good bye to the kids or the wife - you may be the main breadwinner - think of your responsibilities - a criminal record - may lose your job, your home and for what?

Won’t happen to me I hear you say - it may happen to you - stay away and voice your concerns to your mp.

06/08/2024

What’s on my mind? Can’t concentrate is what’s on my mind! I grew up with Racism, faced it all my life - proper physical violent racism - being called a p**i and a ni**er, amongst a whole host of other abuse, feeling scared to go to school on a daily basis because of what lay ahead - very few people/friends with enough courage to help me - all they could do is stand by and watch.

It’s a distant memory, however it’s become a potential daily reality again, can’t really believe it, thought we had moved on, with education - but we haven’t 🤷‍♂️. It’s a frightening situation - I have read posts by Emma Hardy today - talking about chip spice and what’s hulls favourite shops 😡. White people just don’t get it - you have to be non white to fully understand.

I am preparing for a full civil war tomorrow and over the coming days - it’s brewing - I urge Starmer and his members to take heed and prepare for the worst - it’s not acceptable to allow the police to be over whelmed, abused and injured. You must send out the Army to back up the police over the coming days.

04/08/2024

Diana Johnson

Watched her this morning and she’s out of touch or just deluded. The perps of yesterdays troubles in Hull are not deterred by what the justice system has to offer - you can see that most have led criminal lives. I think living and working on the Avenues you feel safe, but think on, it will not be long before this trouble comes to our doorsteps if change doesn’t happen.

I urge you all to write to your MP to upgrade the polices capability and powers. The police just didn’t have the numbers needed to control the situation yesterday. The Armed forces should be brought in to defeat this terrorism.

Romance ❤️

It’s a precious feeling, (he thinks back to the far away time with fondness 😜). This afternoon just as I was closing a young couple came in - they went straight to my indoor selection at the back of the garden centre - I was with another customer but when they emerged the girl looked a bit deflated - they both passed me and went to my £2.99 offer plants where they were selecting 4 for the £10 deal, the young man came to me and was asking about the specimen monstera I have - I told him they were £30 and in the background I could see the girls face light up - when the chap looked at her - there was that moment - nothing said - but he had to buy it for her - he asked me a few questions and we went to the hot house where she selected the one she wanted - she was smiling from ear to ear and he was because she was, wonderful 😊

So if you have Romance in your life treasure it this weekend 😊

Open tomorrow Saturday 11-4 - if the gates open come take a look - all basket plants now £1 each lots of beautiful colours, climbers, house plants, grapevines, few veg packs left, herbs and a whole lot more - come take a look.

Popped to Morrisons on the way home from walking the doggos, they love marrow bones - I stick them in the freezer - they love licking the marrow out like it’s vanilla ice cream.
Whilst I was there I couldn’t help but look over the very best plant display I have ever seen! Morrisons like many other supermarkets trade in a sale or return basis - I’m not sure this is the case here however I suspect it is. It just doesn’t pay supermarkets to spend money on staff to care for their plants - if it dies it costs nothing, however through no fault of your own you could be buying a plant which is already on its way out.

I care for my plants, I check for hydration daily, dead head, feed and repot when needed, I check for pests and diseases - spray accordingly - my plants receive 5 star care from the moment I acquire them - yes I don’t always get it 100% however I do my very best to make sure you’re buying the very best Uk grown plants in the very best condition.

I’m not open tomorrow (Wednesday) hope to see you soon

Have you noticed how quiet it is today?

The skies are quiet - two of our active basses are closed today USAF Lakenheath & RAF Coningsby. If you’re looking for something to do with the kids over the school holidays - take them to see one of these active bases both have spotters car parks and are surrounded in beautiful countryside - take you camera and some sandwiches. You can find activity times by looking at the bases pages. Or alternatively visit one of the low flying areas - you can find a list of the low flying areas on the gov.Uk website. I can recommend LFA17 there’s a place called Gummers How which is on the south east side of Windermere - great vantage point - spotters car park and an ice cream van through the Summer.

They may be closed but we are open today
10-4 Reegan will be on hand to help you.

Burglars

Its a funny old life, the things you talk to customers about!! I had a break in on my birthday of all days. So had a lay in (for my birthday) got the dogs ready and walked down the garden - the garden gates were slightly open, I have them locked with two padlocks so at that point I feared the worst, but on with walking the dogs, think I was in a state of denial. Met one of the neighbours on the park who told me had been woken at 1am by his dogs, wandered into the garden with a torch but couldn't see anything so went back inside.

On my return I realised they'd taken my electric bike a chainsaw (which was like a family friend) and A Stihl Backpack all in all around £3k worth of belongings gone. The inconvenience of losing the electric bike has impacted me, having to go back to pedalling!!

The Police response was initially poor, a crime report number and a promise to investigate however they were quick to close the case. They have been good to answer some of my questions, and they have been good for advice in how to prevent further incidents going forward - all in all the police response has been good.

So its frequent in the area where I live (Hessle) burglaries are on the rise - the most common offender is the "repeat offender" The Police have - detected them, they have gathered evidence, they have prosecuted them, they have been sent to prison, they then have come out to repeat offend. Just consider the cost? all those highly paid professionals the time, the facilities of prison and it has served as no deterrent!

So chatting with some customers today, we start talking about what you'd do if they were in your home? You have a weapon perhaps a gun - would you shoot them? and if you did you would be going to prison no question - so would you try and cover your tracks or come clean? What a dilemma? I certainly wouldn't want to go to prison but if the system isn't changed and changed fast then I think ordinary hardworking right thinking law abiding folk are.
