Great afternoon yesterday at the SVT Open Weight knockdown Tournament, happy to have won the belt. It was a fun couple fights.
The team from North Star Martial Arts Mickleover did a fantastic job in organization as well as merging many rules sets, to birth a fantastic sport., which includes headbutts, elbows, kickboxing and takedowns, while retaining a great standard of safety!

My opponents were all seasoned martial artist, they came from Kyokushin Karate, Kudo and kickboxing. Thank you for a fun afternoon, fight and beers included!

The credit for this result belongs, first and foremost, to everybody at Fight Ministry Hull , particularly Slaughterhouse-Mel Leathley , Andrew Peck and Josh Omond for the countless hours of padding and sparring, the "mincer" as they call it, Ben Fox for making southpaw a fun intellectual puzzle rather than just a scarp, Mason Creighton the clinch bear, and while last but certainly not least Michael John Patterson for his superb Muay Thai.

Osu!

For like minded martial artists, come and join us every fortnight for our outdoor 'Spartan' knockdown training around West Yorkshire and the Dales

There are many techniques in the way we train our mind and body. One of the training methods traditionally passed down through the ranks from our karate masters is waterfall training.

In the old days back on the mainland of Japan the grand masters used to climb the mountains to the waterfalls and meditate before beginning training under the waterfall with Tensho and Sanchin kata's - these kata's are slow and strong.

Our training consist of the opposite - cardio based Kumite and conditioning and then a quick dip under the waterfall!

Train like a fighter. OSU.

Reflections on Kyokushin Karate in Hull & East Yorkshire

As 2022 is coming to an end and we are ushering in the new year, it is time to reflect on the state of Kyokushin Karate in Hull and East Yorkshire.

Before the creation of the Hull Kyokushin Karate Dojoin Karate Dojo, there was no institutionalized teaching of Kyokushin in the region. The foundation of the club is due in no doubt to the owner of Fight Ministry, Mr Slaughterhouse-Mel Leathley , for facilitating both the creation, the smooth running and the use of the fully equipped building of Fight Ministry, a temple of Martial arts and combat sports if there ever was one in Hull.

The help received from the International Kyokushin Organization Kyokushin Union (IKOKU), thanks to Mrs Vera Shichinohe , has also been instrumental in putting the club on a more global page, to allow students to eventually compete internationally and attend seminars given by some of the biggest names in Karate, from across the globe.

The club also owes a debt of gratitude, to Shihan Fouad El Harrif, 5th dan in Kyokushin Karate and head of the Kyokushin Saint Luc Dojo in Montreal., for recommending the foundation of the club to the organization, a first for IKOKU in the United Kingdom. A personal debt is also owed to Mr El Harrif who presided over my Shodan examination as well as helping shape, institutionalize and grow Kyokushin Karate in Morocco.

Finally, my own master Mr Chen Chun Kang 陈春康, current head of the Shanghai Kyokushin Dojo in Pudong district, who if he hadn’t advised and given me my chance to demonstrate bravery and courage during Saturday morning sparring sessions in the scorching heat of Shanghai summers, none of this would have developed.

On both a personal and club level, the year 2022 was a foundation building year where the pillars, upon which the near to mid-term future will rest, have been erected. Without the students, both kids and adults, that diligently carve up time to come and train every Saturday afternoon, then this Karate club would not be where it is today.

The year 2023 will be under the theme of both growth and fortitude. Growth in number terms for obvious reasons and more importantly growth in skills and personality. While Karate is a complete self-defense method, including punches, kicks, joint locks and throws, it is also a Budo, a warrior’s way. The warrior in Japanese philosophy being the equivalent of the western renaissance man or woman. A person of competence, diligence, wisdom and more importantly curiosity, characteristics that Karate as well as other martial arts aim to instill through studious study and discipline.

Fortitude finds itself in 2 important elements. The study of Kyokushin karate is arduous and painful, built into its bare-knuckle fighting philosophy. It requires thus great fortitude and a stoic tolerance of pain to build competence. The second important element, complementing the first, will be the schedule of full contact knockdown competitions. In a non-exhaustive list, the IKKU tournament in March in Edinburgh, followed by IKOKU’s Kyokushin world cup in Yokohama, the British Kyokushinkai Karate British open as well as the newly formed British Karate Guild upcoming events, all organizations to whom we wish continued success and prosperity. Competing in any one of these events requires a great deal of fortitude and competence owing to the caliber of world renown fighters who participate.

The way ahead is arduous, challenging and exigent. However, apprehending it with positivity, modesty, courage and discipline is the only way forward. It is with these words that I would like to finish this message and to wish everybody a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.

See you on the mat at Fight Ministry Hull
OSU,
Anas Challigui (Head Karate Coach)
