Remnants of the war at Hoxa Head in Orkney. This is one of two coastal defence batteries at Balfour Battery from WW II used to prevent German MTBs (Motor Torpedo Boats), accessing the British Home Fleet base at Scapa Flow.

This was a quick firing Twin 6 PDR (57mm) and could fire approx 40 rds per minute. This number varied to as much as 120 rds per minute with both batteries firing.

Muzzle velocity 2360 ft per second and range around 5000 yards (2.84 miles).

The tall structure in the middle is called the Directors Tower. Top section BOP (Battery Observation Post) for directing fire from the gun emplacement at the front. Lower level for directing the Dispersal searchlights.

Manned by Royal Artillery 533 (Orkney) Coast Regiment.
