As part of , DYW Orkney are promoting a local apprenticeship opportunity each day on our social media.

Our second vacancy this week is from R. Clouston Ltd, who are looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join their workforce as apprentices in joinery and workshop/wood machinist joinery. Clouston’s are a local building contractor and joinery specialist of over 30 years, and offer excellent opportunities to their employees.

The apprenticeship course takes four years to complete and involves on-the-job training as well as attending sessions at UHI Orkney’s construction department.
In the first and second years, you’ll attend classes at UHI Orkney over nine weeks, with the rest of your time spent in the workplace. In the third year, you’ll attend college one day per week for two months. Your fourth year will be spent mainly on-site, but you’ll undertake a skills test at the end of the apprenticeship.

The current given hourly pay rates, as agreed by the Scottish Building Apprenticeship and Training Council, are £5.68/hr in the 1st year, £7.02/hr in the 2nd year, £9.32/hr in the 3rd year, and £11.32/hr in the 4th year.

Pupils in S3 and S4 from Stromness Academy and Kirkwall Grammar School have today (Tuesday 10 October) been attending a Construction Careers event at the Orkney Auction Mart.

This event has been organised by Orkney Construction Training Group and is a chance to learn more about the variety of careers available in the construction industry.

This event will be open to the public between 3.30pm and 6pm tonight, so if you would like to learn more about careers in the construction industry, why not stop past the mart, speak to people working in the industry and have a go at some of the trades.

Organised by Orkney Construction Training Group, the Construction Careers Event will be held in the Orkney Auction Mart on Tuesday 10 October. This FREE event will provide an insight into the diverse range of roles available in the construction industry, information on apprenticeships and how to get into a construction career. There will also be a chance to speak to local employers and ‘have a go’ at some of the trades.

Anyone who is interested in learning more about constructions careers is invited to attend the event between 3.30pm and 6pm at the Mart.
