Northern Soul Art
Neil Thompson has been a professional artist for over 30 years. He was born and brought up in Lancaster, and first discovered soul music in the many clubs and pubs of his home city. The images on Neil’s website www.northernsoulart.com reflect the Northern Soul scene, the first underground music scene in the country (and according to Radio 2, the biggest underground music scene in 2018).
Neil first started drawing Northern Soul images on 23 September 1973. It’s an easy date to remember, as this was the first ever all nighter at Wigan Casino. After getting home in the early afternoon, Neil completed his first painting - this can be seen on our website, the painting is entitled “The Night” - check out https://www.northernsoulart.com/ourshop/prod_6537692-The-Night.html
Neil’s business partner, Pete Doyle, was also at the Casino at the first all nighter. However it was at Skerton High School where we both worked as teachers that we first met in the mid 1990’s. Pete deals with the websites and in ensuring the prints are first class and dispatched quickly.
In 1996 Northern Soul Art was born - the first ever print we produced was using the old offset lytho process - this was before the age of digital printing. The first print was entitled “Something Keeps Calling Me Back” we’ve still got a few copies left of the 1,000 prints we commissioned - check out - https://www.northernsoulart.com/ourshop/prod_1661386-Something-Keeps-Calling-Me-Back.html
