Proud to be a Doula UK recognised birth doula! 🥰
We are very proud to share new evidence of the positive impact that Doula UK doulas make and the growing demand for doula support.
Our members complete an annual return each year detailing their doula work. From this data, we are able to identify the positive impact of having a doula during pregnancy, birth, and after the birth of a baby.
A staggering 2,047 births were supported by a Doula UK doula last year!
We saw an increase in families choosing home birth which was the most popular place to give birth with doula support, closely followed by hospitals and birth centres. 64% of births were spontaneous.
The power of doulas goes beyond the birth itself. With doula support, 99% of families initiated breastfeeding a stark difference to the National average of 71%.
In 2019 research published in the Cochrane Review found continuous support from a doula could improve several health outcomes for both the woman or birthing person and baby. In addition, those who receive continuous support may be less likely to use pain medications, may have shorter labours, and may be more likely to be satisfied with their birth experience.
Doulas provide continuous emotional, practical and informative support to the whole family. If you're curious to find out more about doulas or if you would like to find a doula to support you, visit www.doula.org.uk or click Find a Doula in our link tree.
Doula UK is on a mission to show the world the incredible benefits of doula support, and our research is backing it up!

The creating of community through my classes is so important to me. This month, I've had two different previous students get in touch with me to tell me that they had just met up with some of the friends that they made in my pregnancy (and baby) yoga classes. I see some at my son's school and they are still good friends to each other. Over the years I've had so many students who have made lifelong friends from my classses, and it really makes my heart glow.💕
Pregnancy can be a lonely time if you don't know anyone else who is pregnant. Even if you don't make lifelong friends, having other people around you going through that journey of pregnancy at the same time as you are can be so important. It's so helpful to feel like you're not alone, and to hear other people going through some of the same things as you are.
If you would like to book onto my pregnancy yoga classes, email me at [email protected]. Classes are on Wednesday evenings 6:15-7:30 at the Lancaster Quaker Meeting House. The next term starts on the 1st of November.
For more information you can also visit [email protected]
Saw these today, they put a smile on my face! Such a great idea.🙂

Dr Sara Wickham, yet again, asks the right questions. Why do we think every woman needs to get to exactly to 10 cm dilation to birth a baby? We come in all different shapes and sizes and so do our babies. And why 10? You can read her article on it here: https://www.sarawickham.com/articles-2/the-folly-of-fully-dilated/?fbclid=IwAR2SRDVIOH0co6qNBODg0Zk-qU-x2HUguqM4p7o0lnlZzioQQJkcDdJo9bk
It's so clear that we all come in different shapes and sizes.
And that our bodies grow and do things at different speeds.
So why is it that we teach people that every cervix needs to dilate to ten centimetres before a baby can be born?
Or that ten centimetres is enough for any baby?
Like a lot of obstetric myths, it's not logical when you think about it.
It's one of the reasons that I make "velvet va**nas."
They can be used to demonstrate and discuss this and several other aspects of the va**na, v***a, cervix, perineum and the process of birth.
(For more on that, see the video in our shop, and each comes with a postcard with tips on how to use it.)
It's also why I write articles like The Folly of Fully.
Because someone needed to debunk the myth that all cervixes need to get to 10cm (and only 10cm) in order for birth to happen.
Because it's not true, and that's not helpful.
I've got several other articles on this topic on my website as well. They show how and why it's time to move past what the textbooks say and to celebrate the wonky, untameable reality of our birthing bodies.
You can see the article at https://www.sarawickham.com/articles-2/the-folly-of-fully-dilated/

I came across this quote earlier today and it just felt right for me so I wanted to share it with all of you. It's a lot like how I talk about embracing contractions when you are in labour instead of fighting against them. It's a waste of energy during labour to resist the contractions and often makes things more difficult.
Most of us are glorious messes at one point or another, and some of us are all the time! Life is messy. So today, instead of resisting the mess, I am doing this: embracing it, loving it, and seeing the beauty and glory in it.
You are important, mothering is tiring sometimes, so please give yourself some time and space to rest, you deserve it!
Interested in a home birth? Helme Chase Maternity Unit are hosting a home birth workshop on the 24th of November. Read below for more details.
Despite the grey skies and rain, I am feeling happy, as I'll be starting to teach a new term of pregnancy yoga tonight at the Lancaster Quaker Meeting House. Looking forward to seeing some new faces tonight. 🙂
