Last week our Creative Director, Hannah Robertshaw was part of the panel for Leeds International Screendance Competition. Here she is alongside the other panel members.

The shortlisted films will be shown as part of the Leeds International Screendance Competition 8 November. The programme and tickets will be launched 10 Oct.

Serving Dance On realness

As part of we're showcasing how we innovated with new technology during the pandemic to bring social dance sessions to people who were isolated at home.

Today we're celebrating innovation in the arts through the national campaign.

Adie Nivison, our Older Peoples Producer, explains how we used new technologies during COVID to run social dance sessions for older adults in Leeds and Bradford.

"During the COVID pandemic we had to innovate quickly to support people who were isolated at home. We used Zoom to connect over 400 older adults through weekly social dance sessions. We ran everything from online voguing to flamenco. These online sessions over lockdown reached new people who struggled to come to physical sessions and so, when lockdown lifted we continued and we still run weekly dance classes over Zoom."

Yorkshire Dance is appalled by the riots, violence, racism and hatred which have unfolded in communities across the UK over the last week. This has impacted the safety of the artists who deliver our dance sessions, the people who come each week to enjoy their dance class and our staff team.

As a charity we are passionate about bringing people from all walks of life together through dance. We are opposed to violence, racism, harassment and discrimination in our communities.

During this time of unrest we stand in solidarity with all Global Majority, Refugee and Asylum seeking people in Yorkshire and beyond. We encourage all our artists, staff and participants to look out for each other over the next few weeks. If your event has been affected by recent riots and we can help out with publicity or free studio space please get in touch.

We are receptive to any suggestions you have. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to proactively stand in solidarity with Global Majority, Refugee and Asylum seeking people in Yorkshire.
