Prehospital Austere Environment Emergency Medical & Dental Support. Pre and post video tutorials add a positive dimension to hands on workshops.Yesterday we did our biannual Wilderness Expedition Dentistry and Facial Trauma workshops for Remote Area Risk International , our 4th year. 8 hours of intensive training covering vast amounts of subject matter is tiring but satisfying, knowing that our past students have actually put into use the skills taught.
Sharing skills through practical training for World Extreme Medicine Wilderness Expedition Medicine course was a total privilege. Wilderness Expedition Dentistry is a mandatory skill for any medic venturing into the world of austere medicine.
Blindness in the setting of midfacial trauma is retrobulbar hemorrhage. This condition occurs in less than 1% of midfacial trauma injuries. Retrobulbar pressure results in occlusion of the ciliary arteries that are responsible for blood supply to the optic nerve head. The subsequent optic neuropathy is caused by ischemia.
Midface trauma is tricky to manage in an austere pre hospital setting. To add to their existing tools at @edalemountainrescue , we ran a facial trauma workshop geared towards primary management till Medevac can take place . Thanks to Louise Mortimer we could introduce the team to the use of Rapid Rhino 900 and 550 with hands on modules supervised by @bencooper_bc1 , myself & @mikemcole ( All @worldextrememedicine faculty)

Focusing for 8 hours is a hard job . Only way to do this is by making the training essentially hands on . That is what we did for the @remotearearisk course lead by Matthew Davies FRGS .
