Wilderness Expedition Dentistry
A free educational resource for medics to deal with dental emergencies in an austere environment.
We also aim to publicise organisation and remote locations, who are in urgent need of dental volunteers.
On deployment, facial injury! Offshore posting and denture fractures! Endurance athlete falls and fractures their front teeth! In all these highly likely scenarios what would be your vital, go to, reference?Pre deployment digital mouth scan are becoming increasingly routine. They form a valuable record for our armed forces, endurance athletes and humanitarian field workers. Their increased popularity is due to ease in access , affordability, excellent software added to the fact that they can be e mailed to any laboratory in the world, for the construction of dental prosthesis, printing a 3D mouth model. In standard NHS dental practices, this is now been done routinely . We are familiar with 3Shape Trios 5 scanner (other scanners available) From extraordinary it’s now a normality. The scan can be accomplished by any medical professional and can easily be incorporated in pre deployment assessment protocols
Prehospital Austere Environment Emergency Medical & Dental Support. Pre and post video tutorials add a positive dimension to hands on workshops.Yesterday we did our biannual Wilderness Expedition Dentistry and Facial Trauma workshops for Remote Area Risk International , our 4th year. 8 hours of intensive training covering vast amounts of subject matter is tiring but satisfying, knowing that our past students have actually put into use the skills taught.

Enthusiastic medical students , taking time out of their busy curriculum to actively engage in Wilderness Medicine Course , putting the effort to do all the pre workshop reading is incredibly rewarding and satisfying. The magic of campfire conversations 🔥✨
There’s something about the vastness of the great outdoors and the warm flicker of the fire that conjures up dreams - and decisions. It was one such campfire moment in the deserts of Namibia that established our roots.
It's always special to see those conversations are still taking place on our expedition courses over 20 years later ❤️
masters students are a phenomenally interesting group to teach . They keep you on your toes with lateral questions requiring pretty in depth knowledge of the subject. It was a very satisfying 2 days of teaching at Corfe Castle.
Humanitarian dentistry is getting traction! Following webinar organised by Al S for the Australian Forces Dentists , I recently had a chance to share experiences gained from numerous deployments with our Colombian colleagues at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana organised by María Carolina Rocha Díaz . The medical and dental graduates of today seem to have a burning desire to use their skills where it matters most and support them, we must.
Stabilisation of jaw fractures is important to minimise pain or discomfort. Anthony Lynham in his book recommends soft cervical collar for stabilisation rather than traditional barrel bandage. In austere environment how can we do that ? in shows us how an improvised neck splint is made.

Pre , post and on deployment how do we loosen our muscles and keep them active. You are short of time and bandwidth in a humanitarian deployment. Team 5 Foundation on this deployment we used KATALYST . It was fantastic. I have a tight, weak shoulder. I used the boxing mode to loosen it and strengthen the adjacent muscles . Here you can see and .mramor . The training got a huge thumbs up from .sportspodiatr
LuminAID has proved an important member of our team. Lighting up our lives while teaching , kayaking through the mangrove swamps , walking around base camp. LuminAID thanks for your support to Guatemala.
Tarantula bite added a new dimension to this times Guatemala deployment. Expertly managed and dressed by .sportspodiatry . The love of our jungle natives will be well remembered :-)
Transporting medical dental equipment through austere environment requires protection from moisture , mud , dust. At we use dry bags to transport and after disinfection wipes use them as our base layer for setting up our kit. They also kindly provide us with their excellent jungle sleeping bags, it’s got this mesh that keeps the naughty tarantulas away at night, so you get a good night’s sleep before the next clinic .
Keeping hydrated between clinics 😁Team5 Guatemala Deployment
Eye protection for patients is vital . However when doing multiple dental extractions in hot humid and distracting environment, it becomes even more important. Our patients were well protected with protective glasses during humanitarian deployment in Guatemala.
Walking through swampland and then doing dental extractions all day, is hard work . Thanks to and waterproof cloud rock2 beating the environment keeping our feet dry and comfortable . Guatemala mission.
