We had a brilliant day at our Summer Music Camp and recordings will be available soon!

24 young musicians aged 8-14 joined us for a fantastic day learning about how to create your own music. At the end of the day, we had four new pieces. A huge shoutout to our dedicated tutors and we are so proud of each student for their hard work and creativity.

Here is an insight into their creative ideas

All About Today - Bryan’s Group
This song describes their Summer Music Camp day. It was inspired by their feelings and what they wanted to achieve.

On The Boat - Mimi’s Group

Inspired by nature and the lovely hot weather we have been having, we created a musical soundscape inspired by the beach. Each character had a musical feature, where we explored melody, harmony, and texture to personify them. Can you spot the sun, boat, wind, crabs, waves, and the shark?!

Hotel of Dreams - Caroline’s Group
The group started out coming up with themes for their song which included: hotel, dreams and creepy. They knew they wanted it to be in a minor key so chose some minor chords to create a progression. Then they added lyrics and a melody and developed the structure. The song is about being trapped in a hotel with the different rooms you enter being dreams or nightmares…

Haunting in Hawaii - Nick's Group

The group started by deciding on the form and structure of their song, listening and talking about popular songs. In the end, they choose an ABA structure as a format.
Each section comprised of either 8 or 16 bars, the B section came first as an idea of A to A altered, so we then decided to go to the key of D, taking an idea of a bass line from a Youngblud song and changing it which was used for the B section.
This technique is commonly used in pop music composition. Once the students started to experiment with the idea it started to sound a little ‘Hawaiian’ which then inspired the song title and the lyrics.
They decided the A section sounded a little ‘creepy’ so the lyrics reflected this and then they designed a happy chorus in D Major.
We decided we also needed a hook. Every good pop song has a ‘hook’ so they came up with a catchy little line played by the saxophone. They decided it would be a great idea if the ‘hook’ came first and then returned later.
We then came up with a bridge so we used ternary form with an added C section. The bridge became the sax solo.
They really considered the shape and structure of their song as we wrote it out in sections on the board.

Disney’s ALADDIN is launching its first ever ‘Music Play Day’ on 20 August, during the highly anticipated run of the show at the Alhambra Theatre, Bradford (14 August – 1 September 2024).

This innovative programme will welcome up to 70 young musicians and give them hands on experience of working with a professional theatre orchestra.

We are so excited for our Summer Festival this Saturday. We have performances from 10:00AM-2:30PM in The Venue, 218, and The Wardrobe. Our Tech students are running a recording demo in the studio, and ensembles and bands will be performing a range of music including classical, indie, jazz, musical theatre, pop, rock and more. Entry is pay what you feel and all proceeds support our bursary fund. Let's make this a musical day to remember!

2024 YouthJazz Day - last-minute places

Because of a cancellation, we have some last-minute places available on our Youth Jazz Day this Saturday for high school students interested in jazz and developing creative musicianship skills. There are workshops in the first part of the day from Leeds Conservatoire Tutors Becca Wilkins and Dave Evans, and showcases of work in the afternoon. This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to meet like-minded young musicians.

✨Leeds Junior Conservatoire (LJC) is hosting a series of workshop days on select Saturdays in May and June for students aged 15-18. These workshops will focus on classical and jazz music, providing students with a fun and educational experience. It's a great chance to network, receive application support, and get personalised advice to help you grow as a musician in a creative environment.

✨Additionally, ourselves and LJC will be hosting a Summer Academy for students starting Year 13 in September 2024. Running from Monday 29 July – Friday 2 August 2024, the Summer Academy offers two strands: Performance and Production.

Both strands include a series of classes, practical workshops, and masterclasses with experienced lecturers and industry professionals. It's a fantastic opportunity to experience conservatoire education, build confidence, skills, and connect with like-minded individuals.🤩

Students who complete the Summer Academy and successfully apply to an undergraduate course at Leeds Conservatoire will receive an 8 UCAS tariff points reduction. ‼️

Leeds Junior Conservatoire

This is an amazing opportunity for young people aged between 11 and 18 grade 6 and above who want to play in an orchestra or wind orchestra.

We are delighted to announce that the City of Leeds Youth Orchestra and City of Leeds Youth Wind Orchestra auditions will be held on Saturday 15th June and Sunday 16th June. Applicants must be aged between 11 and 18 years old and of at least Grade 6 standard on their instrument. 🎻

You must be a resident in Leeds or attending a Leeds school/college (anybody from outside of Leeds will be subject to review). 🎶

Seeing the JazzLeeds Education project in action this afternoon at Leeds City Academy was inspirational. Students from years 9-11 have worked with LJC tutor Joe Moore over the last 15 weeks forming a band, and working on new material and their own arrangements. It is amazing to see how they have developed personally, working as a group together, and musically. Wonderful support from the school music department too. This is a brilliant project running in three Leeds schools and linked with Leeds Junior Conservatoire's programmes for young people.

Practice Tips for Musicians

What a fantastic performance! Some of our Performance + students have been working with degree students from Leeds Conservatoire as part of their community music placement. The project was about developing the skills needed to play in a pit band or orchestra, accompanying performers in musicals and shows. A huge round of applause to everyone involved 👏👏👏

Spaces are still available for Jazz Camp for Girls on 2 March 2024. A fantastic music making day for creative girls aged 8-15.

With funding from Leeds Music Education Partnership, the day is free to attend for students who live or go to school in Leeds.
