The Origins of Sugar and Its Impact on South Asian Health

During Diabetes Week, let's remember sugar's journey from ancient times to now and how it affects health. Understanding this history can help us tackle diabetes and build a healthier future, especially for South Asian communities at high risk.

To fight diabetes in South Asia, it's crucial to raise awareness about the dangers of too much sugar, promote healthier eating, and encourage regular exercise.

Public health initiatives have done alot of work already abd still working towards information being more culturally sensitive and include traditional dietary practices in a healthier way.

Sugar has been part of our lives for centuries, and its history is quite fascinating. As we observe Diabetes Week, it's important to understand where sugar comes from and how it affects health, especially for South Asians who have high rates of diabetes.

The word "sugar" comes from the Sanskrit word "śarkarā," which means gravel, referring to its texture. This word traveled through many languages, becoming "sukkar" in Arabic, "zucchero" in Italian, and "sucre" in French, eventually becoming "sugar" in English.

India played a big role in early sugar production. In India, sugar is often called "chini," a word borrowed from Persian, meaning "Chinese." This name came about because of ancient trade between India and China.

Today, many South Asians, especially those of Indian descent, have a high risk of diabetes. This is partly due to a genetic tendency to gain weight around the belly, which increases diabetes risk even if they aren't overweight. Rapid lifestyle changes and unhealthy eating habits have worsened this problem.

The Persian influence on Indian cuisine also brought more sugary foods into the diet, contributing to today's health issues.

Breaking the Silence and raising awareness.

Embracing Mental Health Awareness in the South Asian Community

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Week, I feel it was crucial to highlight the significance of mental well-being and the ongoing efforts to dismantle the stigma surrounding it, particularly within the South Asian community.

Last weekend 11th May 2024, I had the privilege of being invited to talk to over a 100 South Asian individuals on this very topic.

As a Mental Health Ambassador trained by the South Asian Health Action Charity in Leicester, and equipped with qualifications in mental health first aid and workplace advocacy in my professional capacity, I shared insights and experiences aimed at fostering a culture of openness and support.

The response was overwhelming.

Witnessing individuals step forward with newfound confidence to seek assistance was both heartening and affirming.

It underscored the importance of creating spaces where conversations about mental health are not only welcomed but encouraged.

During the talk, I emphasised the availability of resources, including their local charities like The Bridges East Midlands, dedicated to providing support in areas ranging from homelessness prevention to mental health support with their Talk Therapies.

It was inspiring to see attendees eager to learn more about these initiatives and as always, I emphasied that we always welcome volunteers or ambassadors to which there was expression of interest in .

One key takeaway from our discussion is the universal nature of mental health challenges.

Whether it’s a fleeting moment of unease or a more profound struggle requiring professional intervention, no one is immune.
This, it’s paramount that individuals feel empowered to speak up and seek help when needed.

As Mental Health Awareness Week draws to a close, let’s extend a helping hand to those around us who may be grappling with unseen battles.

By fostering an environment of understanding and empathy, we can collectively work towards a future where mental health is prioritized and stigma is a thing of the past.

As I reflect on my journey as well-being practitioner and a well-being champion within our community, I am humbled by the privilege of being presented with opportunites to advocate for health and wellness.

Over time, I've come to realise the profound importance of fostering a culture of well-being, not only in the workplace but in all aspects of life.

Engaging with small communities through focus groups and workshops over a six-week program has been an enriching experience.

Witnessing the appreciation and receptiveness of individuals as they start on a journey to prioritise their health and well-being has been truly rewarding.

From reducing sick days to transforming family dynamics and alleviating stress, the impact of this initiative has been tangible and heartening.

It costs employers 12.7% in sick pay and costs UK £8 billion.

From April, we will be providing enhanced occupational health and well-being programs.

Building upon this foundation, I extend my reach to corporate companies a while back, schools, and small workplaces.

The rationale behind this expansion is simple yet profound – by instilling a holistic understanding of well-being across diverse settings, we can provide meaningful change on a larger scale.

In corporate settings, where the demands of work often take precedence, integrating well-being sessions serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of nurturing one's physical, mental, and emotional health.

By providing resources and guidance, we empower individuals to thrive both professionally and personally.

Similarly, within educational institutions, instilling a culture of well-being equips students with essential life skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

We lay the groundwork for a future generation that prioritizes self-care and resilience.

Within small workplaces, where resources may be limited, the impact of well-being initiatives can be particularly profound.

By offering support and guidance tailored to the unique needs of each setting, we adopt a sense of community and collective well-being.

In essence, my mission transcends mere advocacy – it is a commitment to fostering a collective understanding of the intrinsic value of well-being.

By engaging with diverse communities and organisations, I aspire to cultivate a culture where prioritising health and wellness is not just an option but an essential aspect of leading a fulfilling life.

I am for all for the opportunity to serve as a catalyst for positive change.

We at Health and Well-being Consultancy continue to champion the cause of well-being, knowing that every step we take brings us closer to a healthier, happier future for all.

Walking barefoot on the grass is not only grounding but you bring nature back in to yourself.

I believe that your body would have the natural state of coping with the body frame and ailments that you have.

Your body self adjusts and realigns when barefoot walking.

Being safe is paramount, but where you can avoid wearing shoes and walk like the beach walking on pebbles - think about how great you feel when you come back off holiday!

Is it because you've done barefoot walking on the pebbles and the sand?

Natrual way of foot massage that your body can cope with, without 'thinking' it is a chore of self- care.

Have a listen to this.

A Refreshing Workshop:

Shaping Mindsets and Having Fun!

Last week, I attended an amazing workshop focused on reshaping mindsets – you know, how we think about things. It was really important for me because sometimes life throws stuff at you that messes with your head, and you just need a little help getting back on track.

What made it even better was that we all worked together and had a blast!

The room was filled with positive energy, and we shared stories about why we wanted to be there, supporting each other along the way.

The workshop leader was fantastic! They made everything easy to understand and created an environment where we felt comfortable sharing our thoughts and ideas. Plus, there was plenty of laughter, making it feel more like hanging out with friends than a serious class.

I want to give a big shout-out to my friend Sej Pancholi and her amazing team for suggesting the workshop. Their support meant a lot, and I'm so glad I went.

Now, I feel ready to tackle whatever comes my way with a fresh mindset. In a nutshell, this workshop was a game-changer, reminding me of the importance of continuous growth and learning, especially when it comes to how we see things.

I'm already looking forward to the next accredited course – bring it on!

Here you go.

Celebrating Mahashivratri and International Women's Day

Embodying Inner Strength

As we approach the auspicious occasion of Mahashivratri, a festival dedicated to Lord Shiva, we are reminded of the immense power and strength that lies within each one of us.
Coinciding with this celebration is International Women's Day, a day that recognises and honors the remarkable inner strength of women across the globe. Let us delve into the profound symbolism behind Mahashivratri and the inspiring attributes that both Lord Shiva and women represent.

As we celebrate Mahashivratri and International Women's Day, let us recognise and appreciate the power, strength, and other attributes that these occasions represent.

By acknowledging the innate strength within ourselves and others, we can foster a society where everyone is empowered to create, transform, and make a positive difference. May we draw inspiration from Lord Shiva's ability to create and destroy, and from the unwavering inner strength of women, as we continue on our journey towards a more inclusive and empowered world.

Mahashivratri
Lord Shiva's Strength to Create and Destroy

Mahashivratri is a festival that reveres Lord Shiva, the deity known for his power to create and destroy. Lord Shiva's strength lies not only in his ability to create and nurture, but also in his capacity to destroy and transform. This portrayal signifies the cyclical nature of life, where endings pave the way for new beginnings. It reminds us that true strength lies in our ability to adapt, let go of the old, and embrace the new with grace and resilience.

International Women's Day is a celebration that recognizes the indomitable spirit and inner strength of women. Women all around the world have been instrumental in shaping societies, overcoming challenges, and breaking down barriers. They embody the qualities of resilience, compassion, and perseverance, making the impossible possible. International Women's Day serves as a reminder to appreciate and honor the contributions of women in every sphere of life.

The convergence of Mahashivratri and International Women's Day highlights the inherent connection between the strength depicted by Lord Shiva and the strength exhibited by women. Both symbolise the power to overcome obstacles, create positive change, and inspire others.

Lord Shiva's ability to destroy represents the courage to let go of societal norms and embrace individuality, while women's inner strength reflects their determination to challenge stereotypes and stand up for their rights.
