Featured: Live Life
Live Life are an amazing Lisburn based organisation that really contribute to our community by providing award-winning day opportunities for young adults with additional needs. Through their Social Enterprise programme the participants make a range of handmade products, that they then sell. This provides them with funding to cover the cost of paid for activities. With the support of the staff at Live Life the participants make winter woolie hats, strawberry jam from freshly locally grown Strawberries and a range of bespoke clay products. They sell their items through markets, shops and events such at the RHS shows.

Lisburn Local Heroes: Jack Rogan

Jack has spent the past two years working with MACS in Lisburn as part of their Floating support team. Here is what he had to say when he found out he had been nominated:

“Thank you for the recognition of this. I've been working as a part of the MACS Floating Support team for around 2 years. The team provide housing support to young people aged 16-25 who are homeless, in unsuitable accommodation, or are struggling to manage their tenancy for any reason. As we all know, housing impacts so much of our lives, it gives us a stable base for us to grow and develop. This is why as a part of my job I'll work on mental health, managing money or reaching out for other supports.

We are seeing an increase in the demand for our service due to the increase of people in housing need, being supported by MACS means that the young people we work with don't have to go through the process alone and being a part of the journey is what is so special about our jobs.

Thanks again for the recognition”

Featured: Sonas and free hamper giveaway
Sonas is a cooperative grocer and cafe based in the centre of Lisburn. On Saturday they celebrated 6 months in business at their spacious premises in Market Square. Sonas offers a unique retail experience where you can bring jars and bags (or use their bags and jars) to fill up with everyday grocery items like rice, pasta, oats and flour, with many organic and local options, and lots more, all without the guilt of unnecessary plastic packaging.

Sonas also stock a seasonal range of local and organic fruit and veg, yoghurt, kombucha, cashew-based cheeses, jams and curds. They also offer locally baked sourdough breads and patisserie from the award-winning Daily Apron bakery across the road.

The café serves delicious hot and cold drinks, and some simple and tasty wholesome food options to enjoy indoors or takeaway.

The flexible indoor space can be hired for private events and is an ideal meeting place for groups.

Lisburn Local Heroes: Dee French
Dee is best known for his role as manager of St Patrick's Parish Centre, where he is a familiar and friendly face to all who use the centre. Dee also works with a number of local charities on a range of issues. Here is what he had to say when we told him he had been nominated:

“It's an honour to be recognised like this, but I'm just one part of a larger network. Nowadays there is a huge increase in people being affected by the cost of living crisis. My involvement in a couple of local charities gives me the opportunity to help a lot of families and individuals from all sections of our community irrespective of their colour or creed, but that would not be possible without all the other tireless volunteers who I work with on a daily basis.

The benefit system has pitfalls and a lot of people find themselves falling into the cracks through no fault of their own. Intervention at an early stage can make a huge difference to them. I work with a team of volunteers and other charities and agency to offer help where it is needed.

The Credit Union has been my saviour many times helping me steer through financial difficulty.”

Dee moved to Lisburn 41 years ago to start his family, he now has 6 children who are making their way in the world.

The first of our featured businesses is Down Royal Day Care, a new nursery and school wraparound day care that opens tomorrow, serving families in Lisburn, Moira, Hillsborough, Maghaberry and Maze.

“We have 67 places in our nursery and we care for children aged 0-12 years across our bright and colourful rooms Little Foals, Giddy Ups, Clippity Clops, Pony Club and The Stables. Our opening hours are 07:00 - 18:15 Monday to Friday. Our nursery care includes 3 nutritious meals and an afternoon snack. We have a large, secure outdoor playground called The Paddock with a range of outdoor toys, bikes, scooters, a sandpit, mud kitchen and climbing frames. We have ample parking on site for drop-offs and collections.”

Emily Crawford is currently an Operations Officer in LCU, this is what she had to say about why she joined LCU and what drives her in her job:

"I joined the credit union team in 2020 as an accountancy apprentice. I really enjoy helping people, new challenges and problem solving - all of which I can do at the credit union.
