Pat Catney SDLP
SDLP Lisburn. Husband, Father & Grandfather. Author - Period Products (Free Provision) Act (NI) 2022.
We welcome and endorse the Irish Government’s decision to recognise the State of Palestine today. A two-state solution that recognises the aspirations of both peoples is the basis for a sustainable peace.
A proud and humbling moment for me as the provisions of our Private Members Bill become reality today. Thank you to everyone who worked to make the Period Products (Free Provision) Act (NI) 2022 a reality. A huge step forward.
Congratulations Cllr Lilian Barr SDLP! What an achievement - you will do wonderful things for Derry as its Mayor.
Find someone that looks at you the same way Master Brewer Owen looks at his beer 🍻😍
Last night, despite initial DUP hesitancy, the Council agreed to examine the costs and practicalities of my proposal to commemorate Frederick Douglass and the anti-slavery movement, outside Lisburn 1st Presbyterian Church, where Douglass spoke in December 1845.
Two years ago today we passed my Private Members Bill - the Period Products (Free Provision) Act to make period poverty history. What a difference this will make when it’s rolled out this year. Thank you to all of the activists who worked alongside us to make this law.
Great to be back in Derry today with the boss Colum Eastwood MP and the SDLP Local Leaders programme. Mol an óige agus tiocfaidh sí!

The abolitionist Frederick Douglass visited Lisburn on Monday 29th December 1845, where he spoke in Lisburn First Presbyterian Church about the global campaign for emancipation and against slavery. Despite Lisburn & Castlereagh having the third highest ethnic diversity of any Council area in NI, we’ve no permanent public artwork reflecting that fact. I’m proposing that the Council erects a memorial to commemorate Douglass’ visit on Market Square, outside the Linen Centre.

Best wishes to Leo Varadkar T.D. as he steps down as Taoiseach. Thank you for your great vote of confidence in our wee home and your commitment to protecting our rights in the face of a hard-Brexit. Good luck to you and Matt for the future.
Well said Claire Hanna. We strive for peace.
Ramadan Mubarak from the SDLP Team.
We wish everyone celebrating a healthy, happy and peaceful year ahead.
Down in Belfast this morning and got to see the wonderful new statue at City Hall of abolitionist and suffragist Mary Ann McCracken. What a wonderful woman!

Progress on Cuts traffic lights
Following years of accidents in this area I began pushing the department in 2011 to install safety measures at this junction during my time in the Assembly. I was successful in getting approval from Minster Mallon for a feasibility study and I am glad to see the progress that has been made, with the department seeking a contractor to carry out this vital work.
Called into the Courtyard cafe just to say thanks for a fabulous night at Stepping Stones Gala dinner at La Mon house Hotel and a quick coffee and scone. Well done all 👏👏👏
Constituency Surgery
Ever since our wee office on Smithfield Street closed we have been looking for a way to maintain the SDLP’s presence in our community and facilitate dealing with local issues. So, every Friday from 1pm to 5pm we will be in the Bridge Community Centre meeting with constituents.

Congratulations to Martin Busch on his election as president to the Irish congress of credit unions and to Lisburn Credit Union on reaching the milestone of 50 years of serving the community. A big thank you to Mayor Andrew Gowan for hosting the reception, it was appreciated by all Staff and volunteers, past and present. Well done all.
First time I’ve seen a field of Pumpkins at Lambeg.
What did the orange pumpkin say to the green pumpkin? “You look a little sick.”

There has been a lot going on this week, but when something matters you make the time.
Lots to be done this week
Closure of the railway line on Sunday 10th September 2023. Works associated with the line closure from 23:30 on Saturday 9th September until 04:30 on Monday 11th September 2023.
During this time, there will be significant engineering works ongoing with day and night working.
Bus substitutions will be in operation throughout this line closure and passengers are advised to check the Translink Journey Planner before travelling.
I’m at the scene of a RTA at the Cutts the Police have arrived and now waiting on an ambulance 3 years ago I secured the money for a feasibility report plan to fix this dangerous junction at Oakwood primary school this junction is extremely dangerous and needs sorted.
I want to thank everyone who’s been in touch with me following the continuation of the election count from the voting on 18th May.
Today the Court appointed process to continue the count to a further stage - stage 7 - was completed in the Foyle Arena.
At the end of this stage, I remain ahead and the Council and the Electoral Office will report that to the Court for the Judge to make a declaration next week.
I want to thank again all the people who voted for me or gave me a transfer on the 18th May - every vote matters.
I also want to thank my election agent, SDLP colleagues and canvassers, friends and family - and especially my wife Bronagh Reilly for their help, not just during the election campaign itself, but over the subsequent months since then.
I also want to commiserate with Alliance candidate Philip McKinney after the completion of the final stage today. I know he worked for everyone across the Waterside during the last council mandate. I look forward to the conclusion of the Court process next week and thank the Electoral Office, the Derry City and Strabane Council officers and the Court Service personnel for their work to bring the count to a valid and comprehensive conclusion where the choices of the people of the Waterside are properly respected.
I look forward to continuing in my Councillor role working with all other elected representatives to serve the people of the Waterside in the term ahead. There is much work to be done!
Celebrating Lisburn's Special Olympics winners! Thanks to the Mayor for accepting my proposal to host the reception. And a special shout out to my son-in-law's brother, Jonny McCartney who won 7 metals in total! Delighted also for Claire O’Neill Badminton Olympian medal winner 🥇
