It's easier than you think to be free from all kinds of anxiety. A year has passed and my client is flying high and free ✈️
This popped up in my messages this week - I love to hear how well my clients are doing.
And you might also notice how long-lasting the changes are. I'm often asked: Should I wait until I'm about to fly (or do whatever it is that you're anxious about) before I have therapy?
It's personal choice, of course, but my answer is always: Why suffer any longer than you need to?
BWRT
Heard this week: My new client telling me the moment they decided to book in after speaking to a previous client:
Brilliant first session today with a new client programme to resolve . As is common, this person has been through other types of therapy before finding their way to me for . Let's do this 🙌
I really don't like the acronym MADD, nor the tendency to add 'disorder' to the effects many life events can have on us. But, it is very common that people who have been living with high anxiety for a period of time will also experience low mood.
For these clients, we work on the anxiety triggers first and then reflect on their general mood - most often, at that point, there is no need for any further therapeutic support. No lengthy therapy lasting months or years, you can feel better super quick 🤷♀️
Author and originator of BWRT Terence Watts is a regular contributor to Psychreg - Read his latest piece about the psychological hand-me-downs that can be all too limiting and potentially damaging for us.
The Psychological Hand-Me-Down Those who grew up with an older sibling, especially one of the same s*x, will be very familiar with the hand-me-down problem of physical items such as clothes, books, toys and so on.

REAL-LIFE CASE STUDY: ANXIETY AND A HAUNTED HOUSE
Gender: Female
Age: 55-60
Presenting problem: Panic Attacks and a Haunted House
Treatment modality: BWRT
Number of sessions: 2
N has been suffering with anxiety and panic attacks for a long time.
The panic she experiences reaches into many areas of her life – including using lifts, travelling on planes, and driving over bridges or through tunnels. She was finally diagnosed with Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) seven years ago.
Now, she is too afraid to travel anywhere and, with a family holiday fast approaching that she’s promised to go on, she’s on the verge of cancelling the trip and desperate for help. This is the prompt she needs to get in touch.
During our consultation N explains that life was quite carefree until the family moved into their current home in the early 00’s. Their new next-door neighbour visited one day to welcome them to the village and mentioned the tragedy which had befallen the previous owners.
The neighbour recounted how the old occupants had battled through a troubled and turbulent marriage, and that they would often hear the violent arguments. One day, she said, the husband suddenly moved out and, days later, it was discovered that his wife had died by an apparent su***de. Unknown to N until this moment, she now knew that the woman’s body was found in the living room of her new home.
Upon hearing this tragic story, N began to obsess that the house was haunted and something terrible would happen to her.

FROM TRAUMATISED TO TRANSFORMATIONAL
My client Diane and I caught up on Zoom and talked about the wonderful results she got from working together. When we first met she was traumatised and in shock. These days, she is thriving in her new life.
In this clip, Diane talks about how therapy has been transformational and says she now feels completely well.
We used BWRT to help her get through what she needed to get through – a therapy she describes as fantastic.
Before and After Therapy with Claire Gaskin In this clip, Diane tells Claire how therapy has been transformational after feeling traumatised and in shock after a terrible situation.

G is suffering with panic attacks so severe that he believes he will die from a heart attack.
He tells me that his first panic attack happened a few years ago at a nightclub. Halfway through the evening a fight broke out and quickly escalated. G’s heart was racing as he tried to get away but once the situation had settled he still couldn’t catch his breath.
He thought he was having a heart attack and called an ambulance but was discharged from hospital later that night, following tests to rule out anything more serious.
Afterwards, G began having anxiety attacks regularly. They were so bad that he withdrew from his friends and stopped going out.
Eventually, his doctor diagnosed Generalised Anxiety Disorder, prescribing medication and a course of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
Everything was fine for a while until G was at work one day and suddenly, out of nowhere, suffered a full-blown panic attack. His general anxiety took a steep tumble and he began to have attacks every few days again.
By the time he books in to see me, G is sure beyond all doubt that he will die from a heart attack. Whenever his heart starts to race he asks himself: ‘Is this it?’
At our first appointment, I ask him to write a list of everything which causes him to feel anxious. The long list includes:
- worrying about his congenital medical condition
- thoughts of suddenly dying
- dealing with customers at work
- driving; being on public transport
- upcoming events; noisy situations
- confrontations; and the cinema.
His fear of sudden death is top of the list.

Boundaries are the key to happiness 💯
The self-limiting boundaries we draw around ourselves, which are keeping us stuck, need erasing.
The boundaries we don't create around ourselves, which allows others to treat us badly, need drawing.

REAL-LIFE CASE SUMMARY: COMFORT EATING AND SELF ESTEEM
Gender: Female
Age: 25-30
Presenting problem: Comfort Eating and Low Self Esteem
Treatment modality: BWRT

C contacts me for help with weight loss and self-esteem. She lives at home with her parents and has been overweight since the age of 10.
During our initial consultation she explains how, whenever she feels upset, she will eat whatever she can to feel better. Typically, this means bingeing on what she describes as ‘bad’ food – take-away, fast-food – hiding herself away to gorge in private. As she talks she is tearful and says she feels out of control.
C tells me that, as far back as she can remember, she was never allowed treats. She recalls how much she enjoyed spending time with her best friend’s family at the weekend, when they would order a Chinese take-away meal to share.
Those weekends would also provide an escape from her controlling father, who weighed her every Saturday morning. One day, when the scales showed that she’d put on weight, her father scolded her. This is the first time C says she felt really bad about herself, running off in floods of tears.
Later that day she grabbed as much food as she could find to binge on back in her room and had ‘really, really gone for it’.
Now, after nearly two decades, C recognises that this was the start of her secret bingeing, leaving her considerably over-weight and with very low self-esteem. She desperately wants to become slimmer and feel better.
Fast forward a week and C arrives to begin a specially-tailored programme to realise her goals.
Our first task it to tackle the emotional response she has whenever her father criticises her. During the session she decides to replace the upsetting feelings with one of indifference to his words, and to simply walk away as soon as he begins to be unkind.
Over the next few weeks C steadily drops several pounds in weight a week. However, as we approach the end of the programme, she confesses to feeling anxious about whether she can sustain the positive changes she is making.

REAL LIFE CASE STUDY: ANGER AND SELF-ESTEEM
Gender: Male
Age: 35-40
Presenting problem: Anger and Low Self Esteem
Treatment modality: BWRT
Number of sessions: 1
P had always suffered with a lack of self-esteem but he hid it well, developing a range of strategies over the years which has enabled him to live what most people would call a successful life.
What P did not realise, until it was seemingly too late, is that on those occasions when he thought he was coping well, his wife and children were often fearful of bearing the brunt of his short fuse, outbursts of a burning anger which he couldn’t always control. Despite repeated requests from his wife to get help he has always dismissed her pleas as unnecessary.
But, suddenly, she has declared that she is leaving him.
His wife’s announcement is a seismic shock to the system and the fallout clears the way for P to see that he’s been burying his head in the sand for the greater part of his adult years.
With his life in bits and his self-esteem on the floor, he finally asks for help.
During our consultation P talks about his difficult childhood and how he feels an all-consuming anger at the family that rejected him. He is especially scathing of his mother, whose controlling ways led her to constantly criticise P, leaving him with a sense of never feeling good enough which ran into his very core.
In more recent times, he has cut contact with his family to the bare, obligatory minimum, exhausting his sense of duty to just about making an effort at weddings, funerals and the occasional Christmas.
Now, acknowledging that his family is never going to change or listen to him, P understands that the only things within his control are his own reactions, He is especially sure that he can never forgive his mother for what she has said and done.
