Great plants for late summer colour! 🔴🟣🔵🟢🟡🟠

It’s much easier to have a colourful late summer garden than you think with the right plant choices. Every Dig bed comes with plants that will continually emerge and provide structure throughout the year, including these late summer months.

We’ve included a few examples here of some great plants to bring that late summer colour into your own garden - and which of our themes they pair beautifully with, and often feature in anyway!

1️⃣ - Zinnia which works beautifully with the bright colours of The Adventure

2️⃣ - Dahlias which pair perfectly with the boldness of The Jungle

3️⃣ - Heleniums are a lovely flower that bring a flourish to The Mediterranean

4️⃣ - Japanese anemone which come in white to match The Nordic and The Classic and pink to complement The Cottage

5️⃣ - Cosmos is a 10/10 match for our Cottage theme!

6️⃣ - The humble Geranium works brilliantly with The Jungle, shown here against the Fatsia japonica that often plays a central Jungle role

7️⃣ - We also love this blend of Sedum and Lamium - a common combo in our Jungle and Med themes

8️⃣ - And another Cosmos for good measure, which you can see here giving frothy Cottagecore vibes

Naturally, these are just some recommendations - get creative, add colour and make your garden your own easily by adding a few of these late summer stunners! You will be able to find them in your local garden centres, but if you want help transforming your outdoor space, we’re always just a DM away!

Happy late summer gardening! 🌱

Gardens 🤝 Butterflies

Until the 4 August you can take part in the Butterfly Conservation’s Big Butterfly Count (make sure to give them a follow over at )

It’s extremely easy. Simply head to their website to download their handy and free identification app, then pick a spot in your garden or other green space and watch for just 15 minutes, recording and submitting what you see, even if it’s nothing. You’ll be taking part in a vital conservation and citizen science project and helping protect these beautiful insect.

(NB. Not an official partnership, we would just love it if you took part! We will be!)

Secret Strawberries 🍓👀 with The Adventure Theme!

The Adventure is our colourful, lively theme specifically designed with children in mind. It comes packed with bright reds, oranges, and purples for a vibrant colour scheme, and is traced with edible plants from wild strawberries to the option of a central fruit tree. It’s great for children (and the young at heart of course!), it’s great for pollinators and, because wild strawberries will naturally and softly spread, it means the odd secret strawberry too. Which takes a lot to beat!

It’s hotting up - so don’t forget to water! See below for a or two on watering in summer ✅🌊☀️

💧 Plants really do need the sustenance in temperatures like these and so it’s a good idea to be watering at least every three days and definitely - if you can - checking your plants every day

💧 Water the roots/base of the plant rather than the leaves - this helps make sure water goes where it’s needed

💧 Consider installing a water butt and use a watering can to help conserve water

💧 Pots and containers will dry out quickly. They’ll probably need more regular watering so keep an eye out!

💧 Water in the early morning or evening. It’s cooler and helps avoid evaporation

Another day, another garden - this time from Dan in Bristol who used our Cottage theme to fill his wide, longer flowerbed to the brim with height, colour and textures. We love the height from foxgloves and lupins, the colour from geranium and geums and the ground coverage from alchemilla mollis and others. A real showstopper!

We only delivered the plants back in April (swipe right to see how it looked back then!) so it’s a brilliant example of how quickly plants can settle in and explode into life!

Sorry to have been a bit quiet over the past few days - there has been a fair bit going on!

To start your weekend, here’s a closer look at one our bespoke projects created by our brilliant designer, Fabi. Using the Classic and Nordic as its canvas, the garden has a natural yet contemporary feel with meandering paths between deep beds, filled with ferns, Liriope, Epimedium and allium. Multi stem amelanchier trees and Acers provide focal points among the planting, whilst climbers are beginning to arch their way up the high brick walls.

Simple, refined, naturalistic.

If you are looking for help with your outdoor space, don’t hesitate to get in touch! 💚🌿🌸

A Shady Botanical Balcony feat. green, blue and white Med theme planting! ⛅️🌾🌿

Did you know that Dig Instant Beds work really well on balconies? By working out the rough surface area of the pots and containers you want to plant up, and letting us know your order is for a balcony, we’ve got you covered.

This North-facing balcony of one of the Dig team members (which only gets sun in the evenings and only during the spring/summer months) is now in its third year of planting and looking better than ever. With Brunnera and variegated Lamium, Stipa Tennuissima grass and fragrant, flowering Thyme, the low sun levels don’t cause much of a problem. A few plants have been updated with new Med additions over the years too, introducing trailing Muhlenbeckia, a cheerful Daisy, Alchemilla and some Geranium x magnificum in one of the window boxes - going to show that planting a Dig bed is just the beginning, and a perfect springboard to creativity and continued personalisation. Windowboxes here are supported by floor pots (which get even less sunlight), so are planted with a Dig Jungle theme twist of Hosta, Asplenium, Dryopteris beneath a pair of soaring Thalictrum. All backed up with an existing Clematis “Ninon” and some pots of annual flowering Lobelia in white and blue.

For help transforming your balcony, just drop us a DM! And find out more about The Med in our bio 🔗

𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 🔍 Does spring have you wild about Cow Parsley? 🐄 The towering frothy white flower heads (or ‘umbels’) on these Umbellifers, as they’re known, scream ‘spring’, but, as you’ll see on any country lane at the moment, they tend to take over! ☂️

Here are some other fantastic Umbellifers therefore that you can introduce into you garden without them completely taking over. 🌂

They’re all perennials too so will come back each year. For a much more detailed list, check out the link in our bio or head to our blog on our website. You can also find out about all our six beautiful planting themes here too! ✏️

📷 1 - The original: Anthriscus sylvestris or Cow Parsley is seen coating our green spaces, roadsides and woodlands from May to June

📷 2 - Anthriscus sylvestris ‘Ravenswing’: A glorious and less-voracious purple variety of Cow Parsley that can add a sophisticated splash of gentle colour

📷 3 - Ammi majus: A gentle self-seeding Umbellifer that gives beautifully natural-looking addition to any garden - works wonderfully with our Nordic theme

📷 4 - Fennel: Yep, the edible one! Perfect with a Mediterranean garden

📷 5 - Daucus carrot ‘Dara’: Another edible with this lovely variety of the humble wild carrot plant

📷 6 - Astrantia: A Dig favourite and also an Umbellifer. Slightly different to the traditional look and perfect with The Cottage theme

📷 7 - Eryngium: The same goes for Eryngium which is a core feature in our Med theme for creating a heat-tolerant paradise

You might have seen our recent video about our pop-up garden for Flower Show week and beyond. We couldn’t help but carry through the planting to the front of the shop with a vibrant, characterful display using these salvaged chimney pots. A playful little Dig addition to the displays up and down Pimlico Road.

Plants on display here, and with some example close up shots through the carousel are (from pic 2-5) lively Lupins, towering Foxgloves and trailing annuals like Bacopa and Lobelia.

Happy gardening, and happy weekend! 🌺🌸🌼

Full plant info in caption! 🔍 Our Classic theme is refined, contemporary, calming and sophisticated. With hues of green, and glimmers of white flowering plants, the beauty of The Classic is in its quiet simplicity. To introduce a Classic feel to your own outdoor space, here are four starter plants that we regularly use that can help you begin to transform your garden into a calm haven. They will work in most gardens and provide four key elements in the form of Structure, Height, Flow and Ground Cover!

🌳Structure: Pittosporum (we like the ‘Golf Ball’ variety) - A strong, verdant shrub that’s also evergreen meaning colour and shape all year round.

🌿Height: Thalictrum delavayi ‘Splendid White’ - A stunning addition to any garden, an airy Thalictrum is delicate yet strong, beautiful and provides stunning height soaring rapidly above other plants in spring before dying and drying beautifully in winter. They also work superbly well with Hostas as shown in the picture.

🍃Flow: Ferns (Dryopteris are always a good place to start) - Providing lush and interesting leaves to the lower, shadier levels of almost any garden, ferns are a perfect way to add a Classic refined touch to your outdoor space - and many work well in pots too!

🌱Groundcover: Vinca minor (we like ‘Gertrude Jekyll’ for its white rather than purple blooms) - Spreading, creeping, flowering and flowing, Vinca minor adds a touch of classic to any border.

If you’re hooked on Classic plants and want to find out more about this theme, check out the link in our bio. Starting a garden can be daunting. There’s tonnes of choice, but it’s not always obvious what plants work nicely together, so that’s where Dig come in! All of our themes produce variety, interest, greenery, structure and colour all year round. 🔗

We love pots and planters - they are such a good way to refresh or re-energise a space, whatever the size. All our themes work beautifully in this format, but we definitely have a soft spot for the Cottage at this time of year with the vibrant colours and fresh greens.

Here are some simple tips to make the most of any pots or planters you are looking to fill! 🌿🌸🌱

⚪️ Overfill! You can plant closer together than you would in a normal flower bed. The pot will constrain the plants’ roots and the impact overall is greater if there’s no soil on show!

⚪️ Use plants of varying height to create structure and impact. Think thalictrum and aquilegia for height, hydrangea for form, geraniums and alchemilla for ground cover.

⚪️ Trailing plants are a must to soften edges and flow over the sides. Vinca minor is an evergreen winner with purple or white flowers, or get some annuals such as bacopa, bergenia and lobelia

⚪️ Be bold with plant and colour choices. We love a flash of orange at this time of year from Geums and varieties like ‘Totally Tangerine’ which bring bold pops of colour but still are complementary to the overall scheme.

So there you have it! Follow us for more tips and get in touch with any questions or if you need advice!

Full plant info in caption! 🔍 Our Nordic theme (created in collaboration with the wonderful Reena ) will transport you to a haven of ethereal calm, taking its inspiration from the stunning, rural landscapes of Scandinavia. The Nordic is quietly beautiful, simple, and yet packed with interest, shape, and flowing colour. To introduce a Nordic feel to your own outdoor space, here are four starter plants that we regularly use that can help you begin to transform your garden into a peaceful paradise. They will work in most gardens and provide four key elements in the form of Structure, Height, Flow and Ground Cover!

🌳Structure: Hydrangea ‘Little Spooky’ - A strong, stunning shrub with pale clouds of blooms. Comes back every year but doesn’t grow too big.

🌿Height: Veronicastrum virginicum ‘Album (for the Nordic, always white ones!) - A beautiful addition to any garden, a tall Veronicastrum adds towers of colour and height to a planting scheme, while attracting plenty of pollinators

🍃Flow: Briza media or Quaking Grass - This delicate grass moves beautifully in the wind and is called Quaking Grass for its shimmering, entrancing seed heads. It truly transforms any flower bed into a meditative, mindful space.

🌱Groundcover: Tiarella (we like ‘Spring Symphony’ or ‘Iron Butterfly’ particularly) - Returning every year, Tiarella are a perfect pairing for any Nordic garden. They’re great for pollinators and producer towering blooms, also covering the ground with fascinating leaves.

If you’re hooked on Nordic plants and want to find out more about this theme, check out the link in our bio. Starting a garden can be daunting. Full plant info in caption! 🔍 Our Adventure theme - designed in collaboration with - was created specifically for families, kids and the young at heart. It’s a theme brimming with colour, personality, vibrancy, a sense of fun and is truly sensorial; with bold colours, different textures, scents and sights combining to wow the senses. If you’re after a garden with both structure and playfulness but don’t know where to start, here are four basic beginner plants that provide four key elements in the form of Structure, Height, Flow and Ground Cover! 🌸💐🐝

🌳Structure: Callicarpa ‘Profusion’ - Often known as the ‘Beauty Berry’ thanks to their amazing violet berries in autumn, this handsome shrub adds colour and interest with its leaves too - turning a golden purple as you move into winter.

🌿Height: Echinacea (We like ‘Purpurea’ or ‘Red Skipper’) - a really characterful, tall perennial with narrow lance-shaped, dark green leaves and - from summer into autumn - amazing bright purple, red or white flowers with orange-brown central cones. Birds love the seedheads in winter too.

🍃Flow:: Pennisetum (We like ‘Fairy Tails’ or ‘Red Head’) - a very elegant grass with bottlebrush flowers that resemble foxtails. They emerge in mid to to late summer, turning brown in autumn and often lasting through winter. These blooms make excellent cut flowers too.

🌱Groundcover: Wild strawberry - these creeping strawberry plants provide delicious, ultra-sweet fruits which are small in size but big in flavour.
