Videos by Dig in London. We’re making it easier to create a beautiful garden! 🌳🌻🌾 Pre-planned gardens, delivered to your door, and our team on hand to help you care for them.
Summer may be drawing to an end (although it’s perhaps arguable if it ever got started this year..) but there are still so many plants that are coming into their prime to provide amazing shape, colour and form as we move into autumn.🍂
Here’s just a few of our favourites.
🟢 Verbena bonariensis
Flowers for ever with its elegant, purple spires. Super hardy and reliable. Try the ‘lollipop’ variety for less height.
🟢 Hydranges (the paniculata varieties in particular)
Often their giant flower heads are only just coming into bloom. And even when past their best they bring lovely shape in winter. Try ‘Little Lime’ or ‘Little Spooky’
🟢 Canna lily
Wonderful, large, vibrant flowers, surrounded by stunning, large foliage. Brilliant in pots. Try ‘Eisenhower’ or ‘Tropicana’
🟢 Molinia caerulea
A statuesque, tall grass but with soft, airy flower spires. Brings elegance and softness. Try the ‘Transparent’ variety.
🟢 Miscanthus.
A bolder, tall grass whose flower heads steal the show. Try some of the sinensis varieties.
🟢 Pennisetum.
Perhaps our favourite grass for its shape and flow. They have such character and charm. Try smaller varieties like ‘Fairy Tails’
🟢 Stipa tenuissima
A go-to grass for low flow, texture and colour. We love it in our Med and Classic theme.
🟢 Agastache
Pretty purple spires of flowers invite pollinators galore. Try ‘Blue Fortune’
🟢 Echinacea purpurea
Stunning height and impact from these daisy-like flowers. Try ‘White Swan’ for size
🟢 Salvia
We never get bored of them - so versatile and interesting. Try ‘Royal Bumble’ for bold red colour or ‘Amistad’ for height
🟢 Rudbeckia
A perennial so suited to autumn with its warm orange and yellow flowers. A real showstopper. Try the ‘Goldsturm’ variety
🟢 Dahlia
The ultimate crowd pleaser. So fun, colourful and there are endless varieties. Just a couple to try are ‘Cafe au Lait’ and ‘Bishop of Dover’

Med garden transformation in just 8 weeks 🌅 This is right up there for us in showing how quickly and easily our Instant Beds can totally transform a garden. Some brilliant customers had done all the hard work in landscaping their garden into a Med oasis - we just swooped in with the plants! And within 8 weeks of planting, they have all settled in so well - there’s colour, height, flow and contrasts that make it stunning urban garden with more than a slice of Med vibes. We love it. 🫒☀️🌿 All the beds you see here were ordered as Instant Beds from our website, meaning it went from bare soil to full of plants in under two weeks. It is always lovely to show the difference a few weeks can make. For more info and inspiration on our Med theme and others, visit the links at the top of our bio. ☝️ And don’t forget - 20% off Instant Beds with code BIGDIG at checkout is still live!
Foxgloves! We love these iconic Cottage-style plants (their official name is Digitalis) for their height, colour, variety and that pollinators love them so much. They self-seed so can go a bit wild, but we think it’s worth it for their impact and vibrancy at this time of year. They work brilliantly with our Cottage theme and bring joy, height and energy to any space. A little reminder that they are quite poisonous - so it’s worth being aware with little ones and pets! . . . . #dig #digclub #foxgloves #colour #cottagegardens #spring #easygardening #gardeninghacks #digitalis

Welcome back to the Dig Spring Countdown! 🌱🕰️ Today, here’s our Operations Lead, Lydia, with a guide to refreshing your hanging baskets! What’s more, if you visit our blog you can find a fuller guide with plant recommendations and combinations to match each of our Instant Bed themes. Less than a week to go until spring. Are you ready?! 🌸 What you’ll need: A Hanging Basket (with chain and hook) Lining (This may already be included in your basket) Small bag of peat-free compost Small bag of grit, or equivalent, for drainage Plants (enough to fill your basket) Gloves (if you don’t want muddy hands) How to plant up your hanging basket: Step 1: Firstly, add a layer of grit at the bottom of your basket for drainage Step 2: Fill your basket with peat-free compost, you can mix in some grit into your compost too. Step 3: Try out the position of your plants in your basket until you’re happy with the placements and combination. Step 4: Now you’re ready to plant! Pop each plant out of their pots and give the roots a tease loose. This will help the plant settle into their new pot. Continue with each plant, filling around the edges with more compost and giving the top a firm down to ensure the plants are secure into their new position. Step 5: (Optional) Add a layer of grit on top – this can help retain moisture and looks smart too Step 6: Give your new display a good drink of water then it’s ready to hang! Step 7: Secure the basket in place (I like to add a zip tie to make sure it’s double secure) and then enjoy watching all the plants fill out and trail down. • • • #easygardening #gardeningtutorial #gardeningmadeeasy #gardeningforbeginners #hangingbasket #springgardening #digspringcountdown #digclub
Welcome back to the Dig Spring Countdown! This week, Henry’s been taking on some shrub pruning - specifically for Hydrangea, Rose and Prunus - and he’s sharing some tips on how to go about it. Winter and early Spring is a great time to prune shrubs so they’re in the best position to really flourish over the course of the year. But it can feel somewhat intimidating, especially when knowing how much to prune and where! So if you’re ever in doubt we suggest paying a visit to the RHS website for more guidance or support. Or, of course, you can get in touch with us directly via DM on here or emailing [email protected] 🌿 Here’s some more details to go alongside Henry’s video. 🟢 HYDRANGEAS Be sure to check what type of Hydrangeas you have, as different types have different pruning needs. Hydrangea arborescens (as seen in the video) and paniculata can be cut back hard to around 20cm from the base, but make sure you cut above a pair of new, healthy buds. Other types such macrophylla, aspera, serrata and quercifolia are lightly pruned by cutting back the old flower heads to a pair of new buds below. Climbing Hydrangeas shouldn’t be pruned until after they’re flowered in Summer. 🟢 ROSES Pruning roses is essential for their overall health, vitality and appearance. Now is a good time to cut back most varieties, except rambling roses, which are pruned in summer immediately after flowering. Cutting a rose back hard (especially if it’s under 4-5 years olds) will promote strong growth and usually more flowers - especially with Shrub and Bush varieties. Climbing roses should be cut back to their core branch framework. Simple pruning tips are to cut to an outward-facing bud, remove stems that are too close to each other (or are already crossing) and remove any dead, stubby ‘snags’. 🟢 CORNUS Cornus or ‘Dogwood’ appreciate a hard prune at this time of year, as it’s the new growth that goes the brightest of reds and orange com
It’s #PlantOfTheWeek time and nothing gives surprising spring colour quite like a Euphorbia - like with these ones we spotted out and about this week. ✨ The Euphorbia in this video are a type of Euphorbia also known as Mediterranean spurge. There are tonnes of Euphorbia but this variety really sing in spring. With lime green towers of flowers and evergreen blue//green/silver leaves, they make an eye-catching addition to any garden but especially to outdoor spaces planted with our Mediterranean, Jungle or Cottage themes. 🫒🌿🏡 A small word of caution on Euphorbias because their milk-white sap is slightly poisonous and can irritate skin, so care is advised if planting in gardens with inquisitive pets or children. However, they are also very common and it is just the sap (on the inside of the plant) that can be an irritant, rather than the exterior of the leaves or flowers themselves. They are gloriously unique plants, always command attention, and we love them. 💚 • • • #euphorbia #mediterraneanspurge #medgarden #mediterraneangarden #junglegarden #barbican #digclub #gardengang #gardeningforbeginners #easygardening #plantgang #spring #springplants #digspringcountdown #springcountdown2024

Welcome back to the Dig Spring Countdown! 🕰️ Today, Henry has been sowing sweet peas and chitting potatoes. 🌸🥔👍🏼 We love Sweet Peas at Dig. They’re vibrant, colourful, fragrant and there are tonnes of varieties. And, they’re easy to grow! Here’s how to get them started: 🌸 Ideally, soak seeds in water for 24 hours to help germinate 🌸 Sweet Peas like some depth for their roots to grow into. Old tins or yoghurt pots are perfect for planting (but frankly, anything will do) 🌸 Fill the container with moist peat-free compost to around 1cm from the top, place the seed in and lightly cover with soil 🌸 Find a light, warm windowsill (one above a radiator is perfect) and the seedlings should appear in 10-14 days. Once they have, move them to a cooler spot to encourage the roots to strengthen 🌸 When there are three or four pairs of leaves, just squeeze off the growing tip between your finger and thumb to encourage bushier growth and then plant outside! And now for the potatoes 🥔 Potatoes are so easy to grow at home. Make sure you buy proper seed potatoes (rather than ones from the supermarket or grocer) and check which variety you’re choosing. There are two types of ‘Earlies’ which are usually ready around June/July (and often known as ‘new potatoes’), and then ‘Main Crop’ which need longer in the ground, ready late summer/autumn (and more often used for roasting and baking). Before planting, you’ll need to ‘chit’ them, which essentially means letting the sprouts grow from the potatoes to about 2cm before you plant them outside. Just place them in an old egg box, sprout side up and keep in a cool, dry place inside for 4-6 weeks. That’s it for today. Have a great weekend! 👋🏼 • • • • #bigspringcountdown #springcountdown2024 #allotment #seedpotatoes #veggarden #sweetpeas #springplanting #easygardening #gardeningforbeginners #anyonecangarden #gardengang #plantgan #plantlife
It’s time for our #PlantoftheWeek and, with spring in the air, this week it’s the CROCUS ☀️🌷🌼 Flowering now, Crocuses are a true sign that spring is really on the way. But why do we love them so much? Crocuses are sun-loving plants that don’t need much looking after. They can generally look after themselves, especially in a lawn or verge. They’re happy in lots of soils and come in a beautiful range of purples, pinks, whites and yellows – ranging from subtle and dusky to bold and vibrant. Generally planted as bulbs (or, technically ‘corms’) in the autumn, they can also be planted in flower right now – be sure to check out your local garden centre if you want to add some to your garden this weekend! They also SPREAD and come back stronger every year which means that, within a few years, you’ll have swathes of them letting you know when the seasons are on the up! (Oh and sorry for the croaky voice. Ed’s got a cold 😅 Spring can’t come soon enough!) • • • • #crocus #crocuses #plantoftheweek #digclub #gardengang #plantgang #gardeningislife #easygardening #gardeningforbeginners #plantadvice #gardenadvice #springplanting #spring #springcountdown2024
Welcome back to the Dig Spring Countdown! Today, we have the wonderful Jenny – a senior designer here at Dig – with a simple tutorial on how to divide perennial plants. Dividing (in the gardening world, no calculator needed 🧮) is when you separate a perennial (a plant that returns each year) into multiple smaller plants. It’s an easy way to get more plants for free and is also great for the plant itself, as it keeps it healthy and flowering for longer. Plant dividing is one of those tasks that very much feels like one for gardening experts only, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s easy to do - as you’ll see from Jenny’s video – and now is the perfect time to do it before plants really start waking up for spring. Here’s the key points: - Start by cutting back any dead growth from last year - Use a fork to carefully lift the plant from the ground, retaining some of the soil around the root base if possible - To divide the plant, use your thumbs to find any roots separate from the main root clump and gently pull both sides away to separate into two plants (make sure the new plants come away with their own roots) - If needed, you can use a hand fork and trowel to separate a more condensed plant, or even a garden handsaw - When planting the new plants, in-fill with some fresh peat-free compost, press down and give them a good soak of water And that’s it! BBQ Lamb and Green Goddess salad with @missmimiskitchen 🥑🍴 So, we’ve been quite busy and we’re sharing this one a tad later than we intended. Like, a few months later... whoops! (The whole “planting gardens” thing got in the way - including last year’s Med terrace for our chef du jour: Mimi McMullen!). However, now actually feels like a great time to share this warming recipe amid the cold and frost to help us prepare for summer. Our outdoor spaces are often perfect places to spend time with the people we love - and what better way to do that than around a table. This simple recipe from our good friend Mimi McMullen is a true celebration of summer and makes great use of some of the aromatic herbs in our Mediterranean theme. So, whether you hit SAVE to enjoy this later in the year, or if you’re sticking on a few extra layers, firing up the BBQ and enjoying it this weekend, see the comments below for the full recipe to our BBQ Lamb and Green Goddess Salad with @missmimiskitchen. See you again soon for another Dig x @missmimiskitchen cook off! For more information about our Mediterranean theme, check out the link in our bio ☀️

Build your own Forest Floor Miniature Garden in under 10 minutes!🪴Here’s Henry with a guide to making one of these stunning sylvan displays! If you’re looking for a beautiful wintry indoor display, our Forest Floor Miniature Gardens are a perfect way to brighten up a cool windowsill, and also make very pretty natural centrepieces for a dining or coffee table. What’s particularly lovely about them (we think) is that they go to show that you don’t need a massive garden to be a gardener. Got a bowl? Got some plants? Hey presto. You will need: 1 x Large Bowl 1 x Structural plant (such as a Dryopteris) 1 x Complimentary structural plant (A Hellebore is perfect) 2 x Trailing Plants (We’ve used Ivy and Muehlenbeckia) 1 x Selection of bulbs (Hyacinth and Narcissi are great!) and Cyclamen, as you prefer 1 x A4 sized swathe of Sphagnum moss (available from florists!) 1 x Small amount of peat-free compost Remember too that these plants can be potted outside once winter is over - either in a pot or straight into the ground. You can also use lots of other plant combinations for these displays. Why not try freshening up the bowl in spring with plants that flower in March, April and May - we’d love to see what you come up with when the time comes! • • • • #easygardening #tablesetting #gardeningforbeginners #smallgarden #microgarden #minigarden #howtogarden #gardeningtips #digtoptip #gardeningadvice #indoorgarden #indoorgardening #christmasgarden #festivegarden
A lovely garden transformation using our Classic theme, where (amongst others) the Hydrangea, Polypodium ferns, Gaura and Stipa filled the once empty (or rather weed-ridden) beds into ones with immediate shape, structure and elegant colour. It’s also a nice example of our bespoke service - we turned this project round in just over two weeks, from receiving the brief, to creating the designs for the front and back garden, to planting it all!
Something for the weekend with @missmimiskitchen - a perfect cocktail pairing for our Mediterranean theme! With another instalment of our food, drink and gardening pairings, we bring you a perfect cocktail for a lovely Saturday night or lazy Sunday afternoon: The Bramble, with a little rosemary flourish from our Mediterranean theme… Recipe below! ✨ T H E B R A M B L E In a cocktail shaker vigorously combine: •2oz of gin (we’ve used the *excellent* gin from @ramsbury_distillery) •1oz of freshly squeezed lemon juice •1/2oz simple syrup (1 part water to 2 parts sugar) •1/2oz blackcurrant liqueur •Ice cubes Into two glasses put: •Large ice cube •Two blackberries •A sprig of rosemary (from your Dig garden or otherwise!)
