It is a historical precedent that the name of our theatre changes with the gender of the Monarch, an honour dating back to the 1700s.

The Queen’s Theatre, the first theatre built on this site back in 1705, was named such by permission of Queen Anne.

The theatre has since been rebuilt three times and has changed its name in line with each reigning British monarch. It first became The King’s Theatre in 1714, on the accession of George I.

Her Majesty's Theatre was re-named to His Majesty's Theatre upon the ascension of King Charles III on the date of his Coronation in May.
