Last month, we expanded our art-K community into Hackney, for its rich history and vibrant culture. Speaking of taking on the role of club manager at the new Hackney studio, our experienced art teacher, Hannah, was very excited.

When asked to describe her teaching style in three words, Hannah described it as 'ICE (Inclusive, Collaborative, and Engaging).' But don't worry, I promise that she'd be anything but icy, given her warm and supportive nature. With years of teaching experience at UCLan, Tate Liverpool, and The British Museum, she brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to guide students of all ages.

Hannah's artistic muse is Eric Ravilious, for his challenging perspectives of the British Landscape and use of mark-making in his artworks. Hannah invites all art lovers in the area to pop up in her lovely studio, chat about Eric Ravilious, or simply discuss art in general.

Our students come to our art classes for various reasons. While many come to relax, Sarah has a different purpose. She told me that she was illustrating Elizabeth Bishop's poem. As an English teacher, she wanted to make the poem more accessible to her students with her illustrations.

Hans Christian Andersen said that art is a language without a word. We totally agree with this statement. Art has a unique ability to convey emotions, ideas, and experiences that may be difficult or impossible to articulate with language alone. That's why we believe that with proper support every student can express themselves through art in a more powerful way. Just like Sarah uses her artistic skills to deepen her students' understanding of the poem, an understanding that words alone cannot convey.

Do you know that not all snakes lay eggs? While approximately 70% of snakes lay eggs, others don’t. I learned the fun fact about snakes from one of our students at Highams Park Studio.

The student made a clay snake and some eggs. At first, I assumed the eggs were the snake’s snacks, but he quickly corrected me that they were actually the snake's babies. He explained that in the snake world, girl snakes go hunting while the boy snakes protect the eggs.

He thinks snakes are smart animals, so he put a boy snake on guard duty to keep the baby snakes safe. Just before class wrapped up, I was glad to see him create a girl snake ready to hunt for some food! Let’s hope this snake family stays well-fed today!

Our October Half-Term workshops are now open for booking! Both autumnal projects and Halloween-themed projects are available to choose from.

Does your child want to create their own Halloween decorations? We offer full-day and half-day workshops for children aged 6-16. Our holiday workshop is the perfect place for some spooky fun. Not a Halloween fan? No problem! Making a mushroom sculpture or depicting a forest scene are two examples of our non-Halloween themed projects this Autumn.

Before the October Half-Term, students are enjoying the fun of painting and crafting in our Autumn Term classes. In this September, selected art-K studios (Henleaze, Putney, Highams Park, Horsforth, Farnham, Wi******er) are open 7 days a week to offer more flexible timetables for students to enjoy unlimited fun.

At our Highams Park Studio, a girl decided to give her mum a surprise. She made a papier-mâché pan with a perfectly cooked fried egg; just like the ones her mum makes for breakfast every morning. To make it even better, she added on some pepper and onion leaves, just the way her mum loves it.

Art is a beautiful way to express love, and we always encourage our students to feel and infuse that love around them into their creations. We believe that the support and love from their families and teachers can spark their incredible inspiration.

The universe and outer space have been popular topics for our weekly class students to choose from. We asked them why and they explained that it's always captivating exploring the unknown.

We believe this also explains why our students are passionate about art-making so much; it serves as a method to venture into the unknown. art-K students are just like astronauts exploring space. They wander without fear of getting lost, because they know that art-K studios are their space station behind them with creative oxygen whenever they need it.

Can you guess what our students use wine corks and ice cream sticks for?

When you walk into an art-K studio, you might come across things you wouldn't typically expect in an art studio.

For example, if you ask our students, they'll tell you that combining a wine cork with a seashell creates a lovely stamp. It can leave beautiful marks on your clay.

Art sometimes comes from life; when you let your ideas roam free, your creativity has no boundaries.

Art creation often brings surprises, and these surprises are a part of our daily experience.

We always nurture our students' curiosity in our classes, encouraging them to explore new mediums and techniques. For example, at our Bowes Park studio, we have a dedicated Star Wars fan. He is enthusiastic about transforming a Star Wars figure from 2D to 3D. With our support, he sketches and crafts a model, turning the once fierce 2D character into a less intimidating and even a little lovely 3D version.

How does art-K handle mess…

Sometimes making art = making a mess.
And why not? We believe in embracing the mess.
The best ideas are often hiding in the middle of all that chaos.

And... we know that making a mess at home is not ideal, and that it can just the bad cherry on top of an already too-highly-stacked cake. Often our parents tell us that one thing - apart from the excellent education of course - that they love about their child coming to art-K, is that they don’t have to set up and clear up the mess at home. And art is messy, there’s no denying it, when our students feel safe to explore and experiment things can go a bit wild.

We’re happy to provide a full service, not just for you, our students, but also for all the parents out there who love a clean kitchen 😉

To book a session, please visit our website https://www.art-k.co.uk/

Check out these incredible animal sketches created by our talented GCSE students! Sketching not only helps our students discover their unique artistic style, but it also teaches them important elements like shape, form, light, and shadow that are crucial in painting.

In our courses, we include sketching as a valuable exercise for our students' hands, minds, and eyes, which offers numerous benefits that can be applied in their daily lives.

An additional £1,100 from the profit of the summer exhibition shop has been donated to Go Beyond. So far, we have donated a total of £2,200 to support children's development.

Go Beyond is a charity giving breaks that last a lifetime to children and young people aged 8-13 who face serious challenges in their lives. As an art education provider, we not only value children's educational opportunities but also their right to take breaks. We want to make sure all children have the chance to explore the great outdoors, go on adventures, or toast marshmallows by the fireside with new friends.

We're helping children and young people feel safer, happier, healthier, and more hopeful for the future. And that's amazing.

Our students are busy designing their dream houses using a variety of materials. Honestly speaking, we absolutely adore the Mondrian-style color matching in the second picture, but there's something about the first one that has us completely captivated.

Does anyone notice the face with an evil smile on it and the hidden hands under the bed? These are really a finishing touch that gives the work the vibe of a thrilling detective novel cover.

Guess who donated £1,100? 💓
We did! (And when I say "we," I mean not just art-K, but you and art-K)

As promised, we've donated all the profits we made from our summer exhibition shop to Barnardo's to support children's development.

A big thank you to everyone who made a purchase, and hooray to all art-K students and teachers who contributed their work to the shop.

art-K cares about children's art education and overall development and will continue to do so. Thank you for standing with us to make the world a better place!

In this week's 'artwork of the week,' feast your eyes with this Anne Blockley inspired painting created by an 11 student at our Putney studio. It took her months to complete the work.

Artistry isn't just about creativity; it also involves being persistent. It's a day-by-day, week-by-week commitment. We've seen students putting months into a single project (and it always pays off beautifully!) While we admire our students' talents, we are very proud of their dedication to their work.

That's why we encourage all students interested in joining our art classes from the start of the term. With our structured syllabus and your months of effort, we are confident you'll see remarkable progress by the end of the term. art-K's Autumn Term for children and adults starts this week; it's just the time to join us!

art-K Autumn Term 2023 starts in two weeks.

We're offering weekly classes for children and adults, each lasting 1.5 hours.

For children's classes, we offer different age basket, 6-16, secondary school students (11+ years old), and GCSE/A-Level students.

At art-K, we have a structured approach to art education. Each student in our weekly classes has a personal sketchbook to track their progress in our studio. Starting from basic lines, geometric shapes, and light and shadow, we progress to more advanced techniques like color blending and 3D modeling. It's an ideal place for students to build solid artistic skills.

This September could be a normal month or one full of possibilities. It depends on whether you allow us to show you how creative you could be.
