Tang to create a card for people to send to someone who could have a better life if they trained their dog to be a Veteran Owned Assistance Dogs does this work?
Posted • A well trained assistance dog should be able to work no matter what the distractions are. PJ can happily sit in the meat aisle of our local supermarket whilst I walk up and down getting his groceries for him. I have lost count of the amount of times other shoppers have stopped me to tell me their dog wouldn’t be able to do it. My reply is always thanks but any dog properly trained can ignore distractions. PJ had been trained by me for over a year now to help me when I need it. We now help other veterans and ex emergency workers with PTSD to train their own pet dog. If you would like to know more, check the link in our bio.
Posted • So today I am wondering how many of you googled enochlophobia?
It's a form of agoraphobia, basically I detest being in busy places, it rarely effects me when I am working but when I am away from a work situation I prefer not to be near big groups of people. My first ever panic attack caused by it was over 20 years ago, in a nightclub in Nottingham at a friends stag weekend. I ended up walking miles just to calm down after I left the club. I have had a few more since then, even a few when I have been covering football matches, some of which I have previously mentioned on various social media platforms at the time. This is why I trained PJ to be an assistance dog, he was already tuned into my emotions somehow, so it seemed like a natural step. Having him walk by my side and listen to my mutterings helps me to live as normal a life as possible, and not have to keep making excuses to miss out on large gatherings of friends.
Posted • I have suffered with for a long time, which in the past has lead to me having panic attacks. Normally this only happens in heavily populated places when I am not working, having an assistance dog helps me now as I can go to large shopping centres, busy train stations etc. if I feel my stress levels rising I can just walk and talk to it doesn’t bother me if people think I am a crazy dog man for doing it. At least I am not a blubbering wreck anymore. If you know anyone with a similar diagnosed issue, I may be able to help them. In the UK only trained assistance dogs are allowed to use escalators, it took quite a lot of training before PJ had the confidence to travel on the metal moving stairs. Now he loves them.
Engagement is the key to walking. If your dog is constantly looking around and not paying attention to you. It’s more likely to react to other dogs, pedestrians, cyclists or anything else that they dislike. Structured loose lead walking is one of the services we provide to help you and your dog enjoy your walks.
