AVENSIS is a new and pioneering company dedicated to providing advanced aircraft conversion solution

13/03/2024

Can the supply growth of long-distance freighters keep up with the growth of cross-border E-Commerce?

Between Shein, Temu, Alibaba and TikTok, more than 10,000 tonnes of goods are being shipped a day, Cargo Facts Consulting data found. Equating to approximately 164, A330-200 freighters.

With business models that rely on speed and constant product turnover, their unprecedented demand for air freight means airlines and lessors may well have to look for new solutions to cope.

Avensis’ new industry-specific Passenger to E-Commerce Freighter (PTEF) conversion solution, MEDIUS EVO, delivers unique features for this very market.

Its weight optimisation, and faster loading times - as well as its reversibility - means it is primed to plug the gap in global freight operations.

In its 2023 commercial market outlook, Boeing estimated China's air cargo fleet would more than triple to 750 aircraft between 2022 and 2042.

For operators looking to step into the E-Commerce freight market or increase their capacity, the opportunity can be met with Avensis’ tailored Passenger to E-Commerce Freighter.

Contact the team for more details on how our industry-first PTEF, MEDIUS EVO, can evolve your air cargo operations - and keep pace with the growth of cross-border E-Commerce.

Indeed, we believe it’s the evolution of the market, hence its name: MEDIUS EVO

The MEDIUS Product Family: Reversible, Flexible, Agile

All our products in the Avensis MEDIUS family are fully reversible passenger-to-freighter solutions - giving airlines and lessors premium fleet management versatility and agility.

Avensis Aviation’s PTF designs have become a byword for forward-thinking innovation and this is, in part, due to the flexibility our solutions offer… as well as other unique-to-Avensis features.

The MEDIUS EVO, our new E-Commerce, express market, widebody conversion, continues in this tradition: the Class E cabin is retained but with an introduction of a cargo loading system (CLS) using custom unit load device (ULD) pallets. The solution speeds up loading and unloading times while retaining the ability for the aircraft operator to revert back to a customer configuration should demand change.

Fuel Efficiency Gains with MEDIUS EVO

Our new specialised Passenger to E-Commerce Freighter conversion solution brings unique features to the freighter market.

As well as being fully reversible and delivering gains for operators in faster loading times, the MEDIUS EVO modification is considerably lighter than previous Avensis solutions.

This optimisation of the aircraft's empty weight results in a more fuel-efficient conversion product, therefore boosting the overall operational efficiency of the widebody aircraft to the benefit of freighter operators.

As the only industry-specific Passenger to E-Commerce Freighter (PTEF), MEDIUS EVO will support your business' evolution.

Our Passenger to E-Commerce Freighter (PTEF) conversion, MEDIUS EVO, has hit the aviation airwaves.

We are enjoying seeing the press coverage of our new MEDIUS EVO PTEF solution: its reduced loading times to around 100 minutes compared with more than 250 minutes with the existing MEDIUS solution are certainly making headlines.

Air Cargo News quoted our chief executive, Cristian Sutter, commenting on its features: “The Medius Evo conversion is agile, reversible and applicable to widebodied aircraft, allowing airlines to maximise their fleets through reduced turnaround times. By incorporating new cargo loading capabilities, cargo can be loaded and offloaded faster than ever.”

Cargo Facts mention the “customer-driven evolution” of our MEDIUS reversible Class E cargo modification, “which uses customized, narrow pallets that fit through the passenger door of the A330.”

If you’re looking for more information on this evolution in our suite of PTF solutions, get in touch with the team technical specifications and bespoke advice for your operations: [email protected]

Halve loading time with MEDIUS EVO

The MEDIUS EVO PTEF conversion is a step up from the original MEDIUS design. The Class E cabin is retained but with an introduction of a cargo loading system (CLS) using custom unit load device (ULD) pallets.

Comparing loading times with MEDIUS, we see major gains for operators.

In an example where you have 4 hours loading, and 4 hours flight time, MEDIUS EVO has less than half the loading time for an A330-200 (100 mins).

This means you can make three 4-hour flights with the MEDIUS EVO configuration for every two 4-hour flights you make with MEDIUS - essentially gaining a flight back in loading time.

As the only industry-specific Passenger to E-Commerce Freighter (PTEF), MEDIUS EVO will enable your business to evolve at pace.

Say hello to MEDIUS EVO…

Announcing Avensis Aviation’s New Conversion Solution - the evolution of our MEDIUS conversion: MEDIUS EVO

Avensis has evolved our current A330-200 and A330-300 MEDIUS Class E PTF to support and adapt to the needs of the express widebody cargo market.

The first-of-its-kind Passenger to E-Commerce Freighter (PTEF), MEDIUS EVO will enable operators to maximise their fleet and profitability without having to under-sell cargo capacity to ensure maximum payload.

Like the MEDIUS product, the MEDIUS EVO is a fully reversible passenger to E-Commerce freighter solution with an STC for the Class E cargo compartment.

Offering game-changing operational benefits, including halving loading times, MEDIUS EVO uses the same ULD aircraft operations ground equipment as all ‘door’ freighters.

And it can be installed at any Avensis-approved MRO globally and, therefore, is not restricted to a set production line.

And it’s an agile conversion, we aim to convert an aircraft to a full MEDIUS EVO within 8 weeks (subject to the MRO, kit availability, and conversion sequence).

We are keen to talk about MEDIUS EVO with potential launch partners, so do reach out to our team for more details and precise specifications: [email protected]

With the oldest active Airbus A340 airframe now over 30 years old, the number of active aircraft in passenger service will inevitably decline in the coming years. Airbus originally delivered 377 A340s (including 131 A340-500/600s)... its latest data indicates 200 remain in operation.

The aircraft, often requiring a cabin refresh to support ongoing passenger service, are prime for conversion - and doing so soon will ensure the maximum lifespan and ROI in cargo configuration.

The conversion of your A340 fleet into freighters with the NAVIS solution is perfect for the express market looking for high-volume cargo solutions.

Avensis is currently developing the STC for NAVIS - our full PTF conversion.

Ask us about how this solution can service your operational flexibility across A340 and A330 fleets.

With 29 years of commercial service, the A330 aircraft is one of the most popular on the market: cost-efficient, with lower operating costs than its competitors and less fuel burn, it’s a prime candidate for delivering the high-volume, lightweight conversions for the express market that are Avensis’ specialism.

As the airframe ages, the number of active aircraft in passenger service will inevitably decline in the coming years, and for airlines and lessors who want to ensure the maximum lifespan and ROI of their fleet, switching up to cargo configuration can deliver increased operational flexibility.

Air Cargo Automation Continues

Similar to Europe’s ISC2 which came into force this March, July saw Brazil implement its new custom control system (CCT) whereby carriers are responsible for filing import and transit information in advance of the flight arrival at the destination. (The source data are Master Air Waybill (MAWB), House Waybill (HAWB) and flight manifest information.)

Replacing the manual system, the electronic communication with Customs looks to improve operational efficiency and lead to faster customs clearance.

As we’ve commented previously, the air cargo market in LATAM is growing - and this is another welcome sign of how it's modernising its processes to meet this demand.
If you’re interested in learning more about Avensis’ operations in LATAM, we report on our work regularly in our monthly newsletter.

A view on the passenger-to-freighter market outlook: in conversation with Simple Flying

Last week our CEO, Cristian Sutter, sat down with Simple Flying 's host, Tom Boon, to review the developing passenger-to-freighter market, and how he sees the future of the sector.

Up for discussion was the inevitable cooling of the conversion market in the short term, after seeing the “craze in covid-driven demand” that came to an end and the quick recovery in passenger numbers.
When considering the mid to long-term outlook, Cristian pointed out that:

"The market in the mid to long term is still strong… it requires the replacement of an ageing cargo fleet. If you don’t buy them brand new, as we know, you usually take an asset that has 10-15 years of operations and convert it to a freighter, which means giving it a life expectancy of around 25-30 years, depending on maintenance."

Cristian also highlights MD-11s, and Boeing 747s in particular 747-400s, that are ageing out of freighter fleets and would soon need replacing. Airbus A330 and A340 were mentioned as medium to wide-body freighter conversion feedstock primed to fulfil this gap.

The pair also dived into the scalable portfolio of products that Avensis offers, including flagship solution NAVIS that incorporates a unique, first-of-its-kind, plug-type cargo door.

How the Merlin Pilot communicates 09/08/2023

As innovators, we’re always interested in pioneering aviation technology, particularly in the cargo sector.

So we note that this July, start-up Merlin, has successfully completed trials of the first air cargo network in the US flown by a non-human pilot.

The 25 flights were flown across Alaska - challenging terrain, where communities rely on air cargo deliveries for the basic necessities to live there.

The remote nature - and large test area - of the project meant the team had to evolve its thinking on how the aircraft could retain communication with its hangar base. In this video, Senior Software Engineer at Merlin, Jackie Scanlon, explains their solution, which will allow Merlin to operate at any location on Earth.
The flight trials are based at the University of Alaska Fairbanks UAS Test Site and are in partnership with Everts Air Cargo and the FAA, who awarded Merlin a $1m contract to conduct them.

Congratulations to the team on creating and testing the tech that could drive greater access - and equity - for the Alaskan communities: and have worldwide applications in the future.
