On 24 March 1882, German physician Robert Koch announced the discovery of the bacterium that causes tuberculosis (TB) - a date marked by today.
In the 1800s, it is estimated that the disease caused a quarter of all deaths in Europe. Koch's discovery opened the way for diagnosis and cure, and during the 1900s, the mortality rate declined drastically due to research and the introduction of antibiotics.
One of the founders of bacteriology, Koch was awarded the 1905 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discovery.

With an increasing number of older adults with chronic neurological conditions, understanding brain ageing is of major importance in defining and addressing brain health, and preventing age-related brain diseases.
Could factors such as physical health, social connection, and access to high-quality care services play a vital role in safeguarding brain health throughout our lives?

👇 Figure: The ABC framework for systematic risk exposure evaluation.
The human brain is well protected. The skull obviously shields the brain from outside impacts. Not so well known is the protection "on the inside": a barrier is present between the blood circulation and the brain, the so-called blood-brain barrier (often abbreviated as BBB). The barrier is physically located in the endothelial cells of the cerebral capillaries. This capillary bed has impressive dimensions: the total length of capillaries in the human brain is approx. 600 km with a surface area of 20 m2. In fact, almost every neuron is perfused by its own capillary.
The blood-brain barrier is a major hurdle for successful CNS drug development. Many high potential "would-be" CNS drugs (especially biopharmaceuticals) can currently not be made available to the brain because they do not (adequately) cross the blood-brain barrier.

In this study, young adults who engaged in moderate-to-heavy drinking demonstrated a higher risk for incident stroke, especially hemorrhagic stroke. Learn more: bit.ly/3l1Eu13
Coloured angiogram of the brain of a 48 year old patient after a stroke. There are fewer blood vessels visible compared to normal. This is due to a blocked middle cerebral artery causing areas of ischaemia to parts of the brain.
Strokes can be instantly fatal, or may pass unnoticed. Symptoms can include muscle weakness, behavioural changes or paralysis.
The symptoms of stroke are distinct because they happen quickly:
Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg (especially on one side of the body)
Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech
Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
Sudden severe headache with no known cause
So what to do if maybe your parents or relatives or friends look weird and absent? Act quickly.
Why is there a need to act?
Ischemic strokes, the most common type of strokes, can be treated with a drug called t-PA, that dissolves blood clots obstructing blood flow to the brain. The window of opportunity to start treating stroke patients is three hours, but to be evaluated and receive treatment, patients need to get to the hospital within 60 minutes.

When he learned in 1995 that he had Alzheimer’s disease, William Utermohlen, an American artist living in London, immediately began work on an ambitious series of self-portraits.
The artist pursued this project over an eight-year period, adapting his style to the growing limitations of his perception and motor skills and creating images that powerfully documented his experience of his illness.
The resulting body of work serves as a unique artistic, medical, and personal record of one man’s struggle with dementia.
