Today would have been the 72nd birthday of composer Dr Richard Shephard MBE, DL. We were lucky enough to have a piece commissioned for our visit to Westminster Abbey a couple of years ago. Richard was suffering from ill health and we decided to make this recording of his music to send to him earlier this year: https://youtu.be/il0A4mSmi8k

A Play on Light
Light is life, Light is colour, Light reveals...
A Play on Light is a distillation of Kieran’s life’s work hitherto - a rich collection of people and places from round the world that encapsulates his relationship with life, colour and light. Always the light...
Kieran Slyne
As a 13 year old growing up in the Irish city of Cork, Kieran « just knew » he had to take photographs - he mowed lawns, did paper rounds and washed cars to find the money for his first camera, an East German Praktica LB. Money that wasn’t spent on film and developing went on buying photography magazines as he gained inspiration from the greats of the 1970s, while his remaining spare time was spent at the Everyman Playhouse and the Cork Opera House doing sound and lighting as well as taking pictures for use in posters.
The big move to Dublin came when, at 19, Kieran was selected out of hundreds of applicants for a job in RTÉ, the Irish national broadcaster. Working for many years as a lighting cameraman, mainly for documentaries, Kieran has travelled the world always seizing the moment to take stills. His work has been widely published in newspapers and magazines as well as being used for album covers.

Verily, I say to thee, there is some Stainer being broadcast as part of the Good Friday Liturgy (courtesy of Sam Hucklebridge) at 2pm on the St George's support group. There may be a listen again feature available later on.
Wonder of wonders! We appear to have got trending.
In support, all the way from Glasgow, (with one of her favourite Crucifixion moments) is our very own 'old' Choral Scholar, Billie Robson. Billie spent time at the University of Cambridge studying John Stainer as part of her degree in music.
Our Stainer fun fact for today is from another Cambridge scholar, Emily Melys, who has a side business running Victoriana walking tours both here and abroad:
“John Stainer’s father, top cabinet maker of Southwark, built a wardrobe for Stainer which he took with him to Magdalene College, Oxford with him. C. S. Lewis later inherited it and it became the inspiration for The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.”
Enjoy, share with your friends, and most importantly -
"The Mystery Of The Incarnation" - Billie Robson acc. Sam Bardsley xoxo
We've been overwhelmed with messages of support following the unfortunate cancellation of our annual performance of the great work that needs no introduction, Stainer's The Crucifixion.
Countless performers have reached out to offer their support, and we're doing our best to
The first instalment of on our Holy Week journey is brought to you by one of our favourite 'old' Choral Scholars hiding behind the great knight of the realm himself (accompanied by our organist Sam Bardsley (remotely, of course!).
A series of fun Stainer facts has been compiled from some of the messages we've received, including this gem from Victoriana scholar, Dr Geoffrey Webber:
"There is a school in Lewisham named after the great man. "John Stainer School started out as two buildings, built in 1884 and was originally named ‘Mantle Road School’. In 1954 a decision was made to demolish the Junior building, the land was sold off for housing, the school was moved into the Infant building and the school was renamed ‘John Stainer School’."!"
We hope you enjoy #1 - The Mystery Of The Divine Humiliation - please share with your friends! If you wish to know more about the music programme at St George's or wish to support us, please get in touch!
On behalf of all of those who appreciate fine Victorian music, thank you, all the way from Zurich, our very own Sinéad O'Kelly xoxo
