OBTranslate® partners with the West African Linguistic Society (WALS)

OBTranslate® also known as "OpenBinacle Translate" has partnered with the West African Linguistic Society (WALS) to undertake artificial intelligence and machine translation research to standardize and preserve West African indigenous languages.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two parties covers Machine Translation (MT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Generative AI, and Natural Language Processing (NLP), aimed at understanding the structure and characteristics of over 500 West African languages.

The West African Linguistic Society (WALS) is a professional group of scholars, researchers, field workers, and teachers who mainly come from the West African sub-region. Members primarily come from the Republic of Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Togo.

We are excited to announce that Professor Lendzemo Constantine Yuka has officially joined the OpenBinacle Group as an Advisor (Non-Executive Director).

Prof. Yuka’s enthrallment with languages began in elementary school after he read the 1974 first edition of Karl Grebe’s How to Read and Write Lamnso’. This text is an introductory orthography of Lamnso’. Yuka’s comparative awareness of the differences between English Phonology and the Lamnso’ sound systems culminated in a B. A. (Hons.) degree in Lettres Modernes Anglaises (with a specialization in Linguistics) from the University of Yaoundé, Cameroon. Yuka holds an M.A., M.Phil, and Ph.D. degrees in Linguistics from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. He taught Phonetics, Syntax, and Morphology in the Department of Linguistics and African Languages, University of Ibadan before moving to the University of Benin, where he has been teaching Semantics and Morpho-Syntax in the Department of Linguistics Studies for 25 years and counting.

Yuka is a Professor of Morpho-Syntax. He has been interrogating Southern Bantoid languages and has worked extensively on Lamnso', spoken in the greater part of Bui Division in the North West Region of Cameroon and in the Sarduana Local Government Area of Taraba State, Nigeria. Yuka has taught and supervised generations of students at the undergraduate and graduate levels; some of his students are now eminent Professors (in their own right). He has served as a Visiting Scholar, Professorial Assessor, and External Examiner to many universities in Nigeria and beyond. Yuka has published scientific articles in several reputable journals of language studies and books. He has authored, edited, and co-edited many books. Prof. Yuka has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to advancing research in African languages and promoting linguistic diversity. His Inaugural Lecture titled, On Mentalism and the Value of the Mother Tongue shed light on the relationship between critical thinking and the language(s) with which a speaker expresses his/her thoughts. He is passionate about the urgent need for the documentation and preservation of indigenous African languages, and the cultural richness they embody.

Prof. Yuka is a former Head of the Department of Linguistics Studies and chair of many sensitive University Panels and Committees. He is the Editor of Cambridge Scholars Publishing, Editor of West African Languages Congress (WALC) Proceedings, Editor-in-Chief of the highly reputed Nigerian Journal of the Humanities (NJH), and Editor-in-Chief of the Coaxial Journal of Linguistics Studies (CJoLS). He is the President of the West African Linguistic Society (WALS) and represents WALS on the Committee of the highly regarded Fédération Internationale des Langues et Littératures Modernes (FILLM). He is the current Dean of the Faculty of Arts, at the University of Benin.

We are super excited to announce that Dave Huxtable, Inc has officially joined the OpenBinacle Group's advisory board.

Dave Huxtable has a lifelong fascination for languages - having been mesmerized by language-teaching TV programs at the age of 3! This led to a degree in Linguistics from the University of York in northern England, specializing in phonetics and phonology.

A career at the British Council followed, beginning as a teacher of English and eventually a series of leadership roles. He describes the highlight of this period as the time he spent designing and leading projects to train Chinese state-school teachers in the skills they need to implement a new, communicative syllabus. As well as China, Dave has worked in a total of nine countries and is proficient in ten languages.

Having studied coaching to enhance his leadership skills, Dave moved to California in 2016 and started working as a leadership and language coach, helping people reach their full potential. He also uses YouTube to promote the wonderful diversity of human language and the value of lesser-known languages. His vision is for everyone to have access to high-quality materials in their own language to learn the language of their choice.

As Obtranslate, Obmeet, and Covenant University continue to partner with other universities around the world, in preserving and modeling over 2000 African and European languages, Dave plays a distinct but interconnected role in the study of the structure, nature, and evolution of languages. He will analyze OBTranslate European and African languages and corpus datasets from various angles, including phonetics (sounds), phonology (sound patterns), morphology (word structure), syntax (sentence structure), semantics (meaning), and pragmatics (language in context).

OBTranslate is the most advanced and largest Machine Translation (MT) in Africa and the rest of the world. We identify language families/trees and relationships and analyze language change over time. As Dave Huxtable contributes to the scientific understanding and documentation of languages, we are determined to expand the field of sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, or computational linguistics.
