London Tea Business

Late 17th century, tea started to be served in the London coffee houses, often a meeting place for merchants to conduct business. Teas was expensive though but despite this, tea's popularity grew. Ladies enjoyed tea at home whilst men drank theirs in the coffee houses. However, one very clever entrepreneur, Thomas Twining (founder of the famous tea company) in 1706 opened Tom's Coffee House - just off the Strand, London but by 1717 had changed the name to the Golden Lyon and became famous for selling only loose leaf teas to both men and women. The rest as they say, is history!

Tea In Europe

Around the 17th century, tea had begun to emerge in Europe but whilst the Germans and French remained mainly coffee drinkers, Russia and Britain fell in love with tea! Whilst there is some debate whether the Dutch or Portuguese introduced tea to Europe, what is clear is that in 1662, four years after the first recorded date of tea's appearance in London, Charles II married the Portuguese Princess, Catharine of Braganza and she brought her own tea to the royal court in England. Tea had been a very treasured drink in the Portuguese royal court and when Catharine introduced this fashionable drink to the English royal court, it started a fashion and began to become very popular with the aristocracy and wealthy.

The Origins Of Tea

When considering how tea as we know it came into being, of course it makes complete sense to start at the beginning of when tea leaves became used as a beverage. Chinese legend suggests the recognition of tea's beneficial qualities all started when in 2737 BC, Emperor Shen Nung, a scholar and herbalist who drank only boiled water, was resting under a wild tea tree. A slight breeze caused the branches to stir and a few leaves to gently fall into a pot of simmering water a servant was preparing for the Emperor. The Emperor found the resultant brew to be so deliciously refreshing and revitalising that 'tea' was 'discovered' but not before (as legend would have it) the poor servant was beheaded for allowing the leaves to fall into the water! Whilst it's difficult to know if there is any truth in this legend, as a start for the history of tea, it is accepted that tea was popular in China around that time and as such China is deemed to be the origin of tea.
