What is often considered "fashionable/sexy" can create a habit of incorrect and detrimental orofacial resting postures and subsequently dysfunction.

DID YOU KNOW?

A habitual open lips resting posture can significantly change the orofacial muscle tone, functions, and how those muscles support the face and the teeth.
A habitual open-lips resting posture also promotes oral breathing, hugely detrimental to our airway, dental, and sleep health.

Do you want to correct an open-lips habit?
Start by practicing keeping your lips together at rest 😊
If you struggle to correct the habit and notice your tongue is becoming weak, do not hesitate to contact us for help. Our info is in our bio.

“Amidst Marylebone streets, a clinic stands strong, offering kind care and wellness to all.
With stretches and exercises they set tongues free, empowering speech and swallowing with glee.
Their wisdom and advice offer a guiding light, easing stress and resting night.
You’ve helped patients lives in ways untold and will always be more than your weight in gold.”

This is the cool present and testimonial we had yesterday from a lovely patient of ours!

We are very grateful for the kind words and feel privileged to be able to help improve people’s lives! ☺️

Very interesting! I am hopeful that this project would bring forward some productive clinical conversations, where airway health and stability is taken into account within orthodontic treatment provision.

The oral cavity is part of the airway, clinicians working with the Orofacial structure should keep that in mind when their treatment is set to bring about permanent (non-reversible) changes to the Orofacial structure.

What an honour!

It is so refreshing to be interviewed by an orthodontist who truly understands the importance of our work as Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist and why we must work together to achieve the best possible outcomes in dental and orthodontic provision!

An orthodontist who knows very well that the mouth is part of the airway and that as dental care professionals it is our duty to make sure we know well that our dental treatments can have and impact in our patients airway (positive or negative).

Our patients are much more that just teeth!

Dr Decker knows exactly why early intervention and diagnosis of Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders is crucial for our patient’s dental and general health, wellbeing and development.

Straight Talk with Yulli Tamayo-Myerson Dr. Steffen Decker interviews the experts in the industry about different topics in order to connect the world of orthodontics with other disciplines. Today ...

"Conclusion:
In adolescence, compared to nasal-breathers, mouth-breathers have morphological differences (a more posteriorly positioned hyoid bone and posteriorly rotated mandible) and significantly lower oral functions (such as lip-closing force, tongue pressure, and masticatory efficiency), with tongue pressure significantly influencing mouth breathing. Our results indicate a relationship between mouth breathing and the lip-closing force, tongue pressure, and masticatory efficiency, as well as the significance of tongue pressure on mouth breathing in adolescents. The findings highlight the importance of clarifying the pathophysiology of mouth breathing and its underlying causes."

"This study showed that mouth breathing influences the oral–nasal–pharyngeal microbiota and enriches certain pathogens, accompanied with the alterations in the salivary environment. Further research on the pathological mechanisms and dynamic changes in longitudinal studies are warranted."

“Ring-a-ring-a-rosies
A pocket full of posies
A tissue, a tissue
We all fall down”

It can happen to any of us! A blocked nose, a cold that doesn’t seem to shift for weeks, a necessity to breathe, and a mouth breathing habit is formed.

Getting the right help it’s crucial to help eradicate the habit as soon as possible.

Having a healthcare professional who is able to understand the difference between a habit and a more serious issue is key to getting the correct treatment.

Learning your ABCs:
⭐️Airway: A system that goes further than just the nose and the lungs.👃🫁 It also includes the oral cavity!
⭐️Breathing: Healthy breathing is done through the nose👃. We mouth 👄 breathe when we are ill 🤒 or overheated 🥵
⭐️Chewing: Chewing hard foods 🥕🍎🥜🍗and chewing them well, helps form good strong orofacial musculature and bone structure.

🌟The eyes are for looking!
🌟The nose is for breathing, smelling, and cleaning the air we breathe!
🌟the mouth is for eating, drinking, speaking, singing, smiling, and breathing though it only when we are sick!

♦It is okay to breathe through your mouth for a little bit when you are exercising, whilst you get better at controlling your breathing.

⚡Have you seen top athletes breathing only through their nose while they run and how fast they are!?

🆘 We should breathe through our mouth as much as we eat through our nose.

🆘 If your nose is not working well enough to enable you to breathe through it day and night, you should get this assessed by a healthcare professional who understands the importance of nasal breathing.
