UR Capoeira
UR Capoeira is a teaching method that encourages you to discover your capoeira style and manner. I grew up alone with little, almost no parental guidance.
At the age of 18 I decided to practice martial arts to develop myself - my teacher was Ray Coates. Ray helped me develop as a person and became a mentor - I'm forever indebted to him for helping me become who I am today. I was doing this training in the 80's in Newcastle upon Tyne, which was essentially a foreign land to the skinny las from Southend. Martial arts practice lead me to discover Capoe

This is gold - I remember back in about 2001/2 maybe earlier Mestre Marrom gave me a copy of this and said "Simon this is what you've been looking for" he was right. Nowadays it's available to everyone and it holds the information about how the people back in the 40's/50's sung & played berimbau. If it seems fast it's because your're not used to playing at that speed and or your technique has tension and therefore can't work at that speed. Relaxation and correct technique. Also we can hear a great chorus of men singing really well together. I woould also suggest that this is not rehursed and a true recording of what they did back then. Salve a festa do Bonfin, Salve a festa na Ribeira...

Those that come all have the same thoughts - its cold, a little bit more difficult to arrive - but when you do you triple rewards.
Big thank you to the Capoeira community for bringing such positive energy to the rodas and training this weekend past. Great to meet new people, old friends and keen students from other groups. We are all vulnerable
Playing capoeira shows us vulnerability.
Although it is possible to avoid this by avoiding engagement. If you don’t really enter the game then it’s possible to avoid being caught out. Moving in a rushed, panic-like, individual way avoids clear engagement and does appear to leave you less vulnerable. Is that playing? The bataria (musicians/singers) and your partner set the pace and a good game will be saturated by these two influences as soon as you enter the circle.
I try to teach my students about engagement. Looking and seeing. Feeling and developing a deeper relationship with the other player — during the game! In the beginning, this is difficult for most people — but that is the learning challenge — engagement/confrontation. The fight(see below) element can’t be dismissed but with good use of rituals, music, song and understanding we can fight the game win and lose — or appear too. When we first arrive to learn Capoeira invariably it’s a movement challenge and quite enough. It’s why practice alone is so important — we won’t have to consider anything when we play if we have practised the movements we know or some of them. Playing is about reactions, choices, deception and two peoples energy being guided by the roda. We prepare for this in our daily practice, in class, meeting and seeing different masters and practitioners. It doesn’t exist one way, one correct method, one dominant style and if it did something would die and my ideology wouldn’t exist. UR Capoeira
When I play I know that I don’t always do what I want to, I can’t tell where I will go, what I will do and for this, I avoid all attempts to do something I want — there is no plan. Entering the game I suggest to my students that they need to forget everything, ask for support from the powers that be, engage with the music and watch, see and react purposefully. If your new to capoeira and starting to get a grip on a few things then bring it to the roda, challenge your learning phase. Avoid going around in circles with your friends never really doing anything. Quality over quantity applies here. A good game grasps the attention of even those not watching! A boring game leads to the loss of attention of those watching.
The fight — I say fight but we aren’t trying to actually hit or hurt the other. We are trying to show that we could have applied a blow or trip with sufficient applicable power to be effective.

During some years Mestre Marcelo frequented, promoted and helped Capoeira Angola grow in UK especially London. Here you see him playing me in Bricklane in one of the many rodas around in our summer time. I can say that although I never tried to get his style he had a huge influence on me and helped me with the capoeira orientation of which I don't forget.
I wish you a happy birthday and many more to come.

Capoeira seems to have influenced a whole load of people to explore further - MOVEMENT - and the move like a human idea's which I find so good compared with a lot of new methods that I'm seeing. Capoeira does though still tick all the boxes and has a few extras that the movement revolution doesn't have as yet. Capoeira combines three main elements - like Cuban Rumba - movement, song and music and using these three together for me then entered into the spiritual.
Some people influenced by Capoeira include Ido Portal and Simon Thakur and the ANCESTRAL MOVEMENT
