Souvenir readings continue tonight! Actor Ben Miles reading from Michael Bracewell’s book exploring music and art culture in London between 1980 and 1986. The places, people, aesthetic and technical. The reading starts upstairs at 8pm but come down early for drinks and pizza in the bar. Doors for upstairs open at 7pm and after the reading there are free entry DJs from 9-12. Few tickets remain via DICE or OTD.
Very much looking forward to welcoming Mt Ambiant to The George a week today on Friday 18th October.
Mt Ambiant (Sean) forged his sound between Liverpool and Glasgow as a member of the extended .isle family and solo traveller of the dance and sound, wherever that may be. He’s been known to play long extended sets full of life, It will be a deep dive into a variety of warm danceable musics, driven dynamics and styles ranging from heads down spacious house, hypnotic disco edits and sprinkles of the dancehall style.
Following recent performances at and we've grown to love the sounds and nature of Mt Ambiant.
We open from 11pm as we're closed for a private event earlier in the evening, so Sean will play the night out from 11 til 3.
NEXT WEEK - MONDAY TO WEDNESDAY - FREE ENTRY DJS IN THE BAR
Monday 14th - Sean Johnston (A Love From Outer Space)
Tuesday 15th - Bill Brewster
Wednesday 16th - Lias Saoudi (Fat White Family)
As part of the reading events taking place upstairs, our doors are open for drinks and a dance from 9 - 12, free entry of course. For those with tickets to the reading (still some remaining!), they'll start upstairs above the bar with doors from 7pm, reading at 8pm.
Some more info on the readings here - Tickets available via the DICE link in bio -
Hosted by renowned actor Ben Miles (The Crown, The Lehman Trilogy, Napoleon) along with countercultural publishers White Rabbit Books. Ben reads excerpts from Michael Bracewell’s widely acclaimed account of post-punk London in the twilight years before the digital age, Souvenir.
‘…The best evocation I’ve read of London in the ‘80s…’ Neil Tennant, Pet Shop Boys
‘…These atmospheric recollections of the capital of the 1970s and 80s, and the artists it inspired, conjures a city - and a culture - in a less rapacious age ... Neither a memoir nor a work of psychogeography, Michael Bracewell's Souvenir has elements of both, its shifting, impressionist narrative made up of recalled moments, places and encounters…’ Sean O’Hagan, The Observer
Ben Miles’ readings from Souvenir, lasting approximately one hour, will take place in a venue which would not seem out of place in Michael Bracewell’s book: a forgotten performance space above a derelict nightclub within the iconic music and arts venue The George Tavern in Shadwell. After the readings there will be a live set from three outstanding and prolific DJ’s, curating a night of music that resonates with the world of Souvenir.
All profits from the evening will go to supporting the venue in its fight to remain a home for artists and music in east London for this generation and beyond.

Tragic circumstances leading to an inspired fundraiser to help change lives in Darlington for the better. A friend of The George has sufferend an incomprehensible loss due to a drunk driver, speeding at 140mph, killing his daughter and grandchild in a road accident.
The hospital in Newcastle provided the family with a Haven Room - A quiet, private space to help the family be together at such a difficult time. These rooms come with a kitchen, bathroom, and lounge area, and this peaceful place helped massively with the immediate grief. These Haven Rooms are rare, and the family believe that more hospitals should be equipped with these kinds of facilities, so they're raising £10,000 to equip their local hospital in Darlington, Country Durham with a room like this. They also aim to open a sanctuary house for grieving families for longer stays.
To help raise the funds, Alison Warner is completing a list of challenges, including cycling across the UK and France. It's an amazing cause, and any support, sharing, or donating would go a long way.

It's such an exciting and proud moment for us at The George to be involved in - A fantastic new project, the book celebrates London's landmark independent music venues (including The Windmill, 100 Club, Roundhouse, Moth Club, Koko, New River Studios, Cafe Oto and many more) and focusses on the history and untold stories of the beloved spaces that make our lives so interesting.
The project is spearheaded by our good friends Tash Cutts and Sophie Mo, but the writing of the book will be a massive collaboration, with each chapter penned by different journalists, and will include interviews with bookers, artists and other key figures in the industry with original photography, illustrations and posters.
Sweaty Ceilings have launched an Indiegogo to help raise the money needed to create the book, and for every copy pre-ordered £5 is also donated to the Music Venue Trust. You can learn more and support the project via the link below

WE LIED AGAIN, ITS NOT A WEEKENDER AT ALL. EIGHT DAYS OF THE HALLOWEEN-KENDER. HALLOWEEN NEVER ENDS. HALLOWEEN FOREVER.
The universal balance is out of whack, people. Doctor Strange is doing one of those strange strange things that he does and The George Tavern has been beset with evil and despicable magic. Our only recourse is to host Eight torturous days of Halloween festivities as ritual to dispel our beloved venue of it's ghostly, cursed chains. Join us, as the soul power of each of your bodies in attendance will fuel the energy farm that may, hopefully, satisfy the demons that have made us their victim.
Expect more noxious decor, unpleasant character actors, comedy and performance to turn your nose up at. A vertiable freak show of our best and worst. Much more than you could have ever imagined. It's like boom town or something.
Tickets on sale now via DICE 🙂 uhh IF YOU DARE ... 😈

Aha! We have played a michevious trick on you, as is custom around the hallowed month of October. Halloweekender announcements minorly delayed while we further amplify the ghoulish and horrendous vibe that we have curated.
