Queen Elizabeth II was an inspirational lady who was ahead of her time. Whether you’re a royalist or not you cannot escape the fact that she was a constant for 70 years through good times and bad. King Charles III has enormous shoes to fill!

People around the world are intrigued and invested in our deep routed heritage and culture, and the Royal family's influence of the British Brand has bought great economic benefit. The Queen was a supporter of British suppliers and manufacturers endorsing them and issuing Royal Warrants to companies whose services she used. I’m proud to say the polisher I use, Elliot Fitzpatrick, is one of those companies.

There is no reason to doubt that this support will continue through the Carolean era. King Charles III is a loyal supporter of the British Wool industry and has been ambassador for the Prince’s Trust for many years. In 1990 he set up Dutchy Organics, a leading organic and natural food brand, which aims to help small and medium sized producers.

Queen Elizabeth II was indeed a unique gem and bought a sparkle, not just as ‘a jewel to the world’, but through the wearing of an array of jewellery from her impressive collection! I am personally intrigued by her brooches which were thought to portray hidden messages or symbolism on the occasions she wore them, and she was rarely seen without a string of pearls. I touch on this in a previous newsletter which you can read on the website here: https://www.amandamansell.com/blogs/news/lockdown-life-isolation-diary-gem-7

Let’s celebrate Platinum! (Oops this was meant to post at the weekend! Better late than never)

To coincided with commemorating the The Queens Platinum Jubilee I'm delighted to reveal a spectacular bespoke Platinum bracelet for Anya and Rob in San Francisco. It began its journey in 2020 at the beginning of Covid, so not quite as long as The Queen's 70 year reign, but still a fair amount of time and neither Covid or the 1000's of miles between us was going to stop us!

Platinum is the most durable of the precious metals. It is a dense hard-wearing metal which is 'white' in colour and perfect for the longevity of beautiful special pieces of jewellery. I hope this bracelet will live on, collect stories, mark chapters, commemorate occasions, and bring joy for at least the next 70 years... and beyond!

Rob contacted me a few weeks into Covid Lockdown and asked me to design a bracelet for his wife Anya. They had just received their visas to live in New Zealand. To mark this next chapter in their lives, they commissioned a bracelet inspired by the New Zealand Silver Fern. Two and half years later, here it is!!!

This months GEM Newsletter:

FAMILY
I've found myself on many occasions in tears over the past four weeks, watching families being torn apart as we continue to witness the devastation in Ukraine. The relentless bombardment, barbaric destruction and reckless actions of a monster. We can only hope we see the day when Putin, an isolated evil dictator, faces the consequences of his war crimes, and his regime is toppled. Whilst the strong, resilient and peaceful Ukrainian people are once again united with their families and can rebuild their country with help, love and support from the rest of the world.

A TIMELINE BRACELET LINKING GENERATIONS
Back in the days of Lockdown you may remember a bracelet design in a previous post which transforms Lydia’s treasure trove of inherited chains and trinkets. This week, after a few years in the making, Lydia was finally united with her long awaited bracelet! It is a timeline linking generations, full of stories and memories which will one day be gifted to her daughter to evolve for years to come! :)

Treasure your family, hold them close. Stay safe and well.

A look back at 2021!
Here's a little video montage of the wonderful bespoke commissions undertaken during 2021. Given the challenging year I had, I'm proud of what I achieved and the many happy occasions I helped mark with a creative range of unique one-of-a-kind jewellery for weddings, engagements and special birthdays, as well as memories and precious moments captured in remodelled jewellery. Commissions tend to be mainly rings, but last year also included 3 bracelets, a pair of tumblers and a unique silver tactile keyring.

21/02/2022

I'm a bit late wishing you a Happy New Year, but I hope 2022 has got off to a cracking start! Mine kicked off with a huge clear out and declutter both at the studio and home as I know 2022 is going to be an extremely busy one - as they say tidy environment, tidy mind - or something like that!

There were several points I wished I'd never started, but after a few days of ruthless discarding, calm resumed and it was all worth it!

Aaah and breath...

Now all set for a year of productivity! :)

I've been a little quiet on social media recently. One reason is because I've been busy getting my new venture FORGE (formally LOUPE) off the ground. It's been an enormous amount of work so it was fantastic that the website launched this week and its all starting to come alive! Hurrah!!! :)

It's a simple website on which to grow and gives an insight as into what's to come! Please take a peek and let me know what you think! Link in bio. And follow to stay posted on news, events and products.

A tribute to my biggest supporter and wonderful mum.

In January my lovely mum’s health started to deteriorate, and devastatingly she lost her 9 year battle with breast cancer a few weeks ago on the 9th April, passing away peacefully at home with her family by her side.

I am heartbroken.

I chatted to my lovely, kind, caring, brave and inspirational mum at least once a day every day, and her deep love and support was unwavering. She often told me how proud she was of everything I’d achieved, but I’ve only been able to achieve what I have because my parents have always been there supporting and lending a hand throughout my education, college, early career and to where I am today.

They helped me finish degree work, helped me set up several trade fairs and craft fairs, listened on the end of the phone when I’d had a bad day, offered words of encouragement when I felt like giving up. In 2010 they helped me refurbish my Hatton Garden studio and when the work was finished mum handed me her letter of resignation ‘in the post of painter, decorator, upholsterer, removal operative, cleaner and general skivvy’. She never resigned of course… she never stopped supporting me. She was always there.

I’ve mentioned before about the sentiment that jewellery can hold and its intrinsic value, and I feel fortunate that I was able to make mum some lovely pieces over the years which I will treasure.

I obviously didn’t make mum’s 18ct yellow gold, platinum and diamond engagement ring and 22ct gold wedding ring, but dad did a fabulous job making sure he got them right, choosing to spend the money he saved to buy a new scooter on mum's engagement ring instead! She must have known then that dad was a good catch, and she told me often "They broke the mould when they made your dad". Mum’s 22ct gold wedding ring used to have a floral pattern engraved on the surface but that has worn away over the many years it was cherished.

Mum told me in her final weeks "You will make Loupe a success and don’t let anyone tell you you’re not good enough”. I feel desperately sad that she won’t see Loupe up and running not just because she knew how passionate I am about it, but also because she was definitely someone that gave creativity a go and gained a great deal of pleasure from it.

She tried pottery and undertook a drawing and painting course at the WI’s Denman College which gave her more confidence, and during the last couple of years she gained great pleasure in drawing her favourite characters from Beatrix Potter. Knitting was a favourite pastime, and in recent years during the WI’s Knit & Natter groups she knitted Angel Gowns and tiny hats and robes for premature babies which mum would take to the Luton & Dunstable hospital and she also made twiddle muffs for people suffering with dementia. Growing up she used to make my brother and I all kinds of costumes for school and dance performances. And still hanging in the wardrobe is the ballerina tutu she made me when I was 6 years old.

Mum always questioned where on earth I got my creative talents from? Well I think it’s pretty obvious really. And even though she won’t be there to stitch the cushion covers or give me one of her big precious wonderful hugs when Loupe's completed, I know she will be by my side all the way.

Thank you for being the best mum in the world. I miss you terribly and will love you always # # #

With it being International Women’s day today and Mother’s Day on Sunday, my brave, strong and determined mum is definitely the wonderful woman who inspires me every day!!

Mothering Sunday is also a time for remembering mums who are sadly no longer with us. We remodelled Katryn's late mothers gold rings to be incorporated on the inside of Katryn's platinum wedding ring so that her mum will always be with her. A timeline bracelet full of stories. Some remodelling commissions need a little bit more time and thought than others, and this is the case with Lydia’s treasure trove of inherited chains and trinkets, all with connections to family past and present. After playing with a few ideas, we have settled on this bracelet design which is almost an historical timeline full of stories and memories which will one day be gifted to her daughter, so it can continue to evolve for years to come.

Lockdown Boredom Buster. If you're finding lockdown a bit tedious now, why not sort all the odd earrings at the bottom of your jewellery box and see if they can be made into a new piece of jewellery – like Imogen! She inherited a single earring from her grandmother which we transformed into a simple pendant.

Get in touch to send photos of your sad lonesome earrings and I’ll let you know how I can give them a new lease of life! See more remodelling inspiration on the website. Link in bio.
