Neighbourhood Spotlight: The Wet Fish Café 🎣☕️
Looking for a café in West Hampstead with history, charm, and a dash of Art Deco? is your go-to spot! Established in 2002, they discovered stunning 1930s tiles from the building’s days as a classic ‘wet fish shop’—and that was just the beginning of their journey. 🧱✨

Now a bustling café, The Wet Fish blends great food, coffee, wine, art, and music into a true café culture experience. They’ve created a menu based on what they love and what their customers enjoy, making it a warm and inviting space for the community. 🍴🎶

Proudly independent and thriving, The Wet Fish Café is a neighborhood favorite that celebrates both its rich history and its vibrant present. If you’re in West Hampstead, it’s a must-visit! 🌟

Loch Duart salmon w rice & lentils, green beans & chilli-lime butter 😋

This is a revival of a much-loved classic we had on on a very early menu, many moons ago… the chilli-lime butter is ridiculous!

📍The Wet Fish Café & Brasserie, West Hampstead

WTF1?? WTF INDEED!!

That’s "What's the fish".

Dirty minds you all have!

There is just something about candlelit tables and live music that make the perfect dinner setting. Throw in some seared scallops and a perfectly baked fish fillet and you're at The Wet Fish Café. They've built a strong reputation of being one of West Hampstead's most popular restaurants simply because, they always deliver!

It’s a favourite for locals and during my own visit with my family I quickly found out why.

I can’t lie when I heard the name I had questions, but I’m so glad I went ahead and dined at this independent restaurant. The food was super delish it actually took me by surprise. The flavours were perfectly balanced, the food was fresh and they were happy to make accommodations. The servers were also super friendly and attentive without being too full on.

A magnificent restaurant - "café" doesn't do it justice - with much of its original signage and timber and tiling still intact, delivering heritage and character to a lovely airy, slightly jazz themed, wooden room. You could look around and easily feel like you were in a restaurant in France.

Lots of cool events take place at the restaurant, including a monthly intimate concert. I’ve not been to one of those yet but it’s on my list!

What we had on our visit:
- WTF1 – baked salmon w sweet potato mash, confit leek, broccoli, kale pesto, & beurre blanc (x2)
- Wild cod in batter w caper-soy-crushed potatoes & tartar sauce
- Duck breast w black bean purée, hispi cabbage & red wine jus
- Passion fruit crème brûlée w shortbread & berries (x 3)
- Warm soft chocolate cake w cherry & rum ice cream & rhubarb

There’s no fishy business here so get down to WH for the WTF at the WFC😜

Bonus tip for those of you planning a visit: they have a set menu offer on weekday evenings which is great value!

Wet Fish Cafe - West Hampstead - 12 August 2023

Fishmongers are under-rated.
They smell like fish for goodness sake. But if you can push through the smell (20s apparently..) they're exciting, magical places.

The Wet Fish Cafe in West Hampstead used to be a fishmonger. It still is in fact. You can order next day fresh fish, per person. How wonderful.
And it's also an exciting, magical place.

A magnificent restaurant - "cafe" doesn't do it justice - with much of its original signage and timber and tiling still intact, delivering heritage and character to a lovely airy, slightly jazz themed, wooden, room.

The menu is simple but ingenious - two daily options of fresh fish across two fairly consistent main dishes;
WTF1 and WTF2.

That’s
"What's the fish".

Dirty minds you all have.

The chef and kitchen are raised up above the diners. How fabulous. Like a King overseeing his subjects. Well this King deserves his crown.

I didn't have the best start to my evening - it took a while to get me sat down - but everything was wonderful after that, including the amuse-bouche of a shot of Gazpacho, topped with olive oil. Good enough to warrant a place amongst the Starters' first team if you ask me.

Then the Scallops. I've been here more times than I can count, and it's always the Scallops.
Perfectly cooked, served with a sweet puree, crispy bacon bits and beetroot.

Main course was WTF1 with Salmon - a perfectly cooked piece of salmon on a rich al dente risotto, vegetables and the star of the show, the celeriac puree.
Dessert was Passion fruit creme brulee. Most brulee's are too creamy and dull but the tang from the passion fruit really elevated this dish. Served with some chewy coconut chunks with maple syrup on top, it really was delicious.

I've eaten here dozens of times and it never fails to deliver. A wonderful local gem punching above its weight in all areas. If they gave stars to cafes this place would definitely have one. Move to WH for the WTF at the WFC.

4.25*/5

2 courses - £30
3 courses - £35 (+£2 supplement for scallops starter)
My actual cost - £41.63 incl £2 supp and 12.5% service
