What next in the workplace?

Who is correct when workers claim they're working their tails off, while their employers think they're underperforming? Both are possible. Studies have shown that we are more occupied, with more sessions and internal emails, since remote work needs a higher level of planning. It doesn't, however, imply that our efforts are worthless. Even after almost two years, it isn't out of the question that the initial benefits of working from home have disappeared.

During the period when most of us were already engaged in a corporate culture, the world's biggest experimentation in Zoom working was done. It is difficult for new employees to master the complexities of their jobs when they can't communicate effectively with senior members of the organisation who work from their lavish home offices. Leaders also find it difficult to know what's actually going on if they don't meet with individuals outside of the executive circle in casual settings like coffee or lunch.

It may be time to admit that remote working is not the best way forward in the workplace.

A new model of governance coming up?

We pay little attention to our institutions when they are properly run. They are nothing more than a piece of intangible infrastructure that keeps the economy and almost every area of society running smoothly. In the second half of the twentieth century, "good enough" governance supported economic progress and social harmony.

Despite this, many people have lost trust in their leaders in the modern day. Political leaders, CEOs, and the powerful "Davos Man" are being doubted - if not blamed for the present gloom and doom. Mainly because they have been ‘proven’ not fit for purpose, as they failed to foresee and manage global risks.

This implies that a governance transition is emerging. When the pandemic ends, we will need a new governance model. Governance 1.0 relied on the ‘strong man’. Governance 2.0 was all about ‘shareholder capitalism’ and the primacy of material wealth. Governance 3.0 that emerged with the pandemic crisis, has highlighted the trial and error approach and the crisis management skills of the leaders. What will Governance 4.0 look like? Would long term strategic thinking prevail? A better understanding of the complexities and interconnections of all stakeholders involved? Will society and nature be the leading determinants in leadership?

Change is a necessity: Why Strategic Communication Is Key

One thing is clear: The business of today needs a viable strategy of change in order to thrive. It needs to harness the dynamics of the changing social and economic environment so as to allow them to work to their advantage. A prevalent change relates to how employees think. Statistics on employee engagement and consumer trends offer some insight: 94% of employees today want a job that fosters continual learning and personal growth.

That makes top-down, command-and-control corporate strategy and management increasingly a relic of the past. Traditional management hierarchies are rapidly flattening and only getting flatter.

In order to compete for employee talent and customer loyalty in today's transforming society, the new business organization itself may need to become dynamic, decentralized, human-focused and value-driven. It may need to take on a workplace culture of continual transformation (learning), procedural flexibility, value-driven occupation and deliberate, strategic communication.

Change management needs a complementary holistic and culture-conscious approach to internal communications.
The key to crafting such a holistic communications strategy is to shift focus from securing temporary, outcomes-oriented employee compliance to generating lasting, value-driven employee buy-in. Meaning that communication messaging should help employees understand why what they do has meaning.

The Cost Of Ignoring ESG

ESG policies discourage businesses from relying solely on financial metrics and encourage broader environmental metrics in their decision-making. ESG programs, particularly among the largest companies, are generally well-defined and measurable. Clean energy, decarbonization, and distributed power have become drivers of investment in the energy industry. ESG metrics will be part of business accountability for all the companies soon, in one way or another; so it is best to start preparing from now.

The other side of the coin on CSR?

As corporate professionals, it rarely crosses our minds that things we consider right are seen wrong by large segments of the population. The article that was published recently by the conversation, under the title “CSR commitments: All talk, no action”, raises strong criticism on the effect of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). It challenges the motives of corporations to pursue CSR initiatives. We thought it useful to share it because -as professionals who have dedicated all their efforts to doing good through CSR- we find this debate refreshing and healthy. Yes, neo-liberalism can sound wrong but it has enabled economic growth across the globe - with higher growth rates than ever in the poorer regions. Yes, global production may have its downsides but it has also enabled the less advantaged regions of the world to look up to new opportunities. Yes, corporate governance and transparency is not where it should be yet, but it is much better than it used to be 10 years ago. There are always two sides of a coin, as long as we are ready to see them.

Are leaders more accessible than before?

Creating a culture that can attract and retain staff and talent, is vital for any company.

The challenge for leaders is to adapt their style, so as to meet the needs of a multigenerational staff -including Gen Z employees who expect more from both their jobs and those who hire them.”

Listening and understanding is the first step a leader can take. Introducing honest and transparent communication is another. Leaders can and should become more accessible to employees as this is the means to develop the right culture for their company - the one that inspires but also reflects the values and priorities of their staff.

Building a client communication strategy for the ‘new normal’ after COVID-19

The UK economy may slowly be edging back towards some sense of normality, as more businesses begin to re-open their doors and commence trading, but the market ecosphere organisations face today, is far contrasting to the one experienced just a year ago. The pandemic has undoubtedly had a lasting impact on the psyche of the customer. Creating a memorable experience for the customer is a whole different ball game compared to the past.
